Having the thieving neighbor "go away" would be nice but getting the tractor back is the objective. If enough neighbors show up to demonstrate y'all won't put up with their thieving, they may move on out of embarrassment. Giving charity after is a personal decision and there's not a thing wrong with doing it or not. Keeping the cops out of things is always preferable. The cops would likely keep the damn tractor as evidence in a case that never goes to trial.
