What’s behind Southwest Airlines’s nightmare meltdown?

It's not just the weather.

Not everyone got a white Christmas this year, but pretty much everyone did get a cold one. The Arctic chill that swept across the country left thousands without power, and (according to Southwest Airlines) was responsible for thousands of canceled flights as well.

The airline canceled over 2,900 flights on Monday alone, as well as 2,500 for Tuesday and many well into Wednesday too. That’s between 60% to 70% of its overall daily flight schedules. But while Southwest blamed the weather for the meltdown, other airlines did not experience similar issues.

In fact, 50% of all canceled flights on Monday were on Southwest. Delta canceled a mere 262 flights in comparison, followed by United with 133 and then American with only 12 (though they did have nearly 800 delays). Many are calling the implosion at Southwest one of the biggest travel debacles in history, and there doesn’t seem to be an end in sight.

The company’s hotline reportedly had a five hour plus wait, which mirrored times customers waited in line to speak to a gate agent as well.

Southwest is blaming the weather for the situation. But that can’t explain it all, given that other airlines experienced nowhere near the same amount of problems. What’s more, it conveniently seems meant to get the airline out of its obligations to consumers. Most airlines provide hotel accommodations and other travel vouchers for delays—except for when they’re caused by weather or other “acts of God.”

Using this excuse may help Southwest get out of paying for the needs of the people it is stranding across the country. (Although they’re saying you can submit expenses to them and they’ll honor “reasonable requests.”) And since few can even get through to a representative for assistance, their only real option is to bite the bullet and cough up a pretty penny to book last-minute on another airline.

But while the company seems to be less than forthcoming on its internal problems, a Reddit thread filled with (self-identified) staff of the airline is spilling the tea. In part, they explained the collapse as due to outdated technological issues the company had neglected.

One anonymous employee wrote on Reddit: “This shitstorm is because the crew scheduling software went belly up and it almost all has to be unraveled over the phone with crew members calling scheduling. If we had better technology which eliminated the need for phone calls, this would have been fixed by now.”

And a union representing their flight attendants has also spoken out while pointing to the real cause of the disruption, “years of neglect to technological improvements that would fix operational issues.”

In response to the disaster, the Department of Transportation announced it will launch an investigation into the matter.

It’s important to mention here that a free market hasn’t been seen in the airline industry in decades. Rather, we consistently bail them out with taxpayer dollars, regulate the industry to the point it’s almost impossible for new competition to spring up, and our government sets up policies that typically favor the companies over the consumers. Most airlines should have been allowed to fail a long time ago.

Given the current conditions, it is worth demanding answers on behalf of taxpayers. If they’re going to give our tax dollars to these companies we shouldn’t be left with the bill when they screw up.

We need a free market on the ground and in the skies. But in the meantime, we need accountability and reparations when a government-backed company messes up at this scale.

Merger of Crimean and mainland electrical grids complete – Moscow

The new networks will also improve the energy security of Russia’s new territories, a deputy energy minister has said

Russia has successfully linked the power grid of the Crimean peninsula to that of the nation’s mainland, Deputy Energy Minister Evgeny Grabchak said on Thursday. He added that efforts to construct new energy infrastructure would also be beneficial for Russia’s new territories.

Speaking at a video conference dedicated to the start up of three energy substations in Crimea, he noted that Russia’s federal budget was heavily investing in the development of the peninsula’s electrical grid.

“Even now, we can say that the full integration of the power grid of the Crimean Peninsula and the rest of the Russian Federation has been completed,” Grabchak stated, adding that the process would continue to other regions.

Thanks to network construction activities, we can provide independent power supply to the new Russian territories, Kherson and Zaporozhye regions,” he added, referring to two areas, which, along with Donetsk and Lugansk People’s republics, overwhelmingly voted to join Russia this autumn.

The minister hailed the ongoing energy program as “having a systemic importance.”While noting that the authorities still have a lot to accomplish, future activities should allow them to “bring the [power] grid of the Crimean peninsula to a higher quality level in terms of reliability and security.”

Should Moscow succeed in its endeavors, “it would be possible to say that Crimea’s grid incorporates the most effective tech, which could serve as an example” for other territories, Grabchak stated.

Before 2014, when Crimea voted to join Russia after a coup in Kiev, it was heavily dependent on electricity generated in neighboring Zaporozhye Region, then part of Ukraine, as well as Nikolaev Region.

In 2015, Ukrainian saboteurs targeted the power infrastructure in order to put the peninsula under an “energy blockade,”causing blackouts that affected millions of local residents.

Russia and China complete joint drills

Warships from the two nations were supported by submarine-hunting aircraft

The Russian and Chinese militaries have finished a week of joint naval drills, during which the two sides practiced anti-submarine maneuvers, search and rescue operations, and communications exercises in the East China Sea.

The ‘Maritime Interaction 2022’ exercise wrapped up after seven days of drills, the Russian Defense Ministry said on Wednesday, noting that the warships “jointly searched for a submarine of a conditional enemyand fired a volley of jet depth charges” with the support of “anti-submarine aviation.”

“Naval task forces of the [Russian] Pacific Fleet and the Chinese People's Liberation Army Navy have completed their tasks for the bilateral … exercise in the East China Sea,” it said in a statement.

Footage published by the ministry shows some of the drills in progress, with Russian sailors seen addressing their Chinese counterparts in Mandarin over the radio, while a number of naval guns and other weapons platforms were filmed in action.

In addition to simulating the destruction of an enemy sub with rocket-propelled depth charges, the exercises included “an operation to free a seized vessel” as well as rescue and communications missions, the ministry went on. Earlier Chinese media reports also stated the maneuvers would have a “deterrent effect on [the] US’ simultaneous suppression of China and Russia.”

According to China’s Xinhua News, the drills were staged in waters near the coastal cities of Zhoushan and Taizhou – held in closer proximity to Taiwan than previous iterations of the yearly exercises.

The Russian naval group was led by the missile cruiser Varyag, the flagship of the Pacific Fleet, supported by two corvettes and a frigate, while the Chinese side was headed up by the destroyer Jinan.

Beijing and Moscow have carried out several rounds of exercises together this year, including flights involving nuclear-capable bombers during US President Joe Biden’s visit to Japan, as well as bomber patrols over the Sea of Japan and East China Sea last month. The two countries have held joint naval drills since 2005 under the umbrella of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, a regional security bloc, and the ‘Maritime Interaction’ exercise has been carried out annually for the last ten years.

Guardian with propaganda, probable story: Lula gonna steal everything not locked down

Brazil’s public services face ‘very real threat of collapse’, says Lula

President-elect says transition team have found ‘simplest things not being done’ as result of Bolsonaro mismanagement

Andrew Downie

Public services in Brazil face a “very real threat of collapse” as a result of the mismanagement by the outgoing far-right government, and the incoming administration will have a “herculean task” in rebuilding damaged institutions, particularly in the fields of health, education and the environment, the country’s president-elect has said.

Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva beat the far-right incumbent, Jair Bolsonaro, in a tightly fought election in October and is due to take power on 1 January.

In the weeks since Lula’s victory, his transition team have been evaluating the task ahead, and the leftist leader, who called Bolsonaro’s term “a tempest of fascism”, said they were shocked by what they have found.

“I don’t intend on making a big scandal about this; I just want Brazilian people to know the task that we are facing,” Lula said on Thursday. “After a four-year mandate, we find the government in penury, with the simplest things not being done … because the president preferred to tell lies to his bubble rather than govern this country.”

The transition report said: “The dismantling of the state and the disorganisation of public policies are deep and widespread, and have consequences in essential areas both in terms of people’s lives and the direction this country is going in. This has brought serious consequences for health, education, environmental preservation, job and income generation, and the fight against poverty and hunger, among other things.”

Lula’s vice-president and transition chief, Geraldo Alckmin, said education was particularly badly hit, with text books to be used next year still needing to be edited, the number of children in school down on previous years, and resources for essential services such as school dinners not sufficient to meet demand. University education was “almost in a state of collapse”, he added.

Health is another disaster area, particularly as a consequence of the Covid-19 pandemic, which has killed almost 700,000 Brazilians.

Bolsonaro’s anti-vax stance did not resonate widely in Brazil, which has a record of widespread vaccinations, but budget cuts mean 50% of all children have not received their final polio booster.

About 95% of federal highways have no company maintaining them; almost no new houses are being built for the poorest sector of society, and bodies that oversee search and rescue after natural disasters have been starved of funds, he added.

In an attempt to balance out the grim assessment, Lula followed the announcement with a diverse list of new ministers, including Anielle Franco, the sister of Marielle Franco, the Socialism and Liberty party city councillor who was murdered in Rio de Janeiro.

Franco and her driver were ambushed and gunned down as they drove through the city centre in March 2018.

Two former police officers were arrested but have denied any involvement in her killing. Mafias made up of serving and former law enforcement officers are widely believed to have played a part.…

Brazilian archbishop is threatened for defending Indigenous peoples — even during Mass

by Elizabeth Oliveira on 28 December 2022 | Translated by Maya Johnson

Dom Roque Paloschi, president of the Indigenous Missionary Council (CIMI) and archbishop of Porto Velho in the state of Roraima, Brazil, has been under attack because he denounced Indigenous people’s rights violations.

It has always been risky to live in Amazonia and defend social-environmental issues, but Paloschi says the situation has worsened greatly in the last four years — the period that coincides with Jair Bolsonaro’s administration.

In 2021, 355 attacks against Indigenous people were reported in Brazil — the most since 2013, according to a CIMI report.

Targeted by threats and intimidation even while celebrating Mass, Dom Roque Paloschi faces the double challenge of being a religious leader and defender of Indigenous rights in a world where environmental degradation and violence against traditional communities are increasing.

Aside from being president of the Indigenous Missionary Council (CIMI), a part of the Catholic Church connected to the National Brazilian Bishops’ Conference (CNBB), since 2015 he has also been archbishop of Porto Velho, state capital of Rondônia, which is one of the most deforested states in Amazonia and which is undergoing intense pressure. Paloschi is also secretary of the Pan-Amazonian Ecclesial Network (REPAM-Brasil).

The challenges Paloschi has experienced for some time were illustrated in a recent episode of intimidation involving the archbishop of Aparecida (in the state of São Paulo), Dom Orlando Brandes, on Oct. 12th. Brandes was celebrating a Mass in honor of the patron saint of Brazil, Nossa Senhora Aparecida, and, as is customary on this date of national religious importance, he reflected on the challenges impacting the nation’s most vulnerable populations. He also drew the attention of his followers to the increasing levels of violence in the country.

But this year’s celebrations were attended by President Jair Bolsonaro, joined by members of his administration and many of his followers, who demonstrated acts of religious disrespect and aggression toward journalists. They did not like the criticisms they heard during the archbishop’s sermon, including that “a beloved homeland is not an armed homeland,” a reference to the government’s slogan promoting arming of the general population, which has grown in popularity under the current federal administration. The archbishop of Aparecida also defended the rights of Black and Indigenous populations and spoke out against hate campaigns and disinformation. Since then, reports of attacks suffered by various religious leaders in the country have increased.

Paloschi’s interview with Mongabay was held before Oct. 12, but many details about the daily pressures he faces, such as attempts to curtail his speech during Mass and attacks he has suffered on social networks for his critical beliefs, are similar to the problems that other Brazilian religious leaders are facing in the current scenario of political instability and polarization.

The risks involved in defending Amazonia

The CIMI president tells of innumerous instances of intimidation in the state of Rondônia involving attitudes and claims that make it clear they are coming from individuals intending to impose emotional and psychological pressure. Every Mass celebrated as well as other religious responsibilities have been difficult for this southern religious leader who holds a degree in philosophy from Pelotas Catholic University and another in theology from Rio Grande do Sul Catholic University.

The current situation is no different from the dilemmas he faced as acting bishop in Boa Vista, Roraima, from 2005-15, except that he says he feels the recent repercussions have become more worrisome.

“We live in this region that is typified by attitudes opposing not only the issue of Indigenous people but also of poor people’s rights. Our lives are shaped by this economy of destruction. And the traditional communities here are no longer seen as individuals but simply as obstacles to so-called development,” states Paloschi.

The daily pressures the archbishop is experiencing are the result of his critical stance. He headed denouncements of rights violations against Indigenous peoples and their territories during the CNBB assemblies in 2017, 2018 and 2019. He has also been outspoken at other national and international forums, including at the Vatican, where he has spoken about the problem with Pope Francis in the presence of other acting bishops in Amazonia….

Georgia would-be robber slips on ice while pulling gun, hits head, police say: 'Like a scene from Home Alone'

Witnesses took two guns from the suspect before police arrived to take him into custody

December 28, 2022 4:30pm EST

A Georgia man's attempt to rob a business in the early hours of Christmas morning went awry when employees fended off the suspect, sending him slipping on ice and hitting his head on the ground, according to the Gainesville Police Department.

Luis Sajbocho-Ordonez, 30, is now facing armed robbery and aggravated assault charges.

The incident, which police likened to a "scene out of 'Home Alone,'" began around 1:00 a.m. on Christmas morning.

Sajbocho-Ordonez was allegedly hiding behind a business in Gainesville, which is about 50 miles northeast of Atlanta, and pulled a gun on an employee who walked outside.

The employee got into a physical altercation with Sajbocho-Ordonez, who allegedly fired a shot after another worker exited the building and spooked him.

Sajbocho-Ordonez then allegedly tried to flee the scene but slipped on a frozen patch and hit his head. Witnesses were able to take two guns away from him until police arrived and took Sajbocho-Ordonez into custody.

No one was struck by the gunfire.

"Fortunately, no serious injuries occurred and the perp went to jail," the Gainesville Police Department said.

==SOCIAL MEDIA Elon’s Twitter Will Finish Reversing Bans On Conservatives In 30 Days: Report

“Users that did not engage in threats of harm/ violence, fraud or other illegal activity are being reinstated.”==

Jack Hadfield

Published21 hours

Ella Irwin, the Head of Trust and Safety at Twitter, has said the amnesty review of banned accounts is set to be completed within 30 days.

At the end of November, after restoring a number of prominent conservative accounts, new Twitter owner Elon Musk polled his audience to see if there was appetite for a “general amnesty” for banned accounts. A majority voted in favour of such a move, with only accounts that had not “broken the law or engaged in egregious spam” not being restored to Twitter.

Irwin, who took over the Trust and Safety role from radical leftist Yoel Roth, confirmed late on Tuesday night that the Twitter team had been “carefully reviewing thousands of suspended accounts for the past month,” and that users who “did not engage in threats of harm/violence, fraud or other illegal activity are being reinstated.”

The Trust and Safety Head noted that it would take around 30 days to finish the entire review. It remains unclear if this means that any account that was banned under the previous regime, that remains unbanned following the completion of the review, will have a chance to return to Twitter or not.

According to a previous comment from Twitter Safety on December 17, the new team under Musk said that the restoration of banned accounts for whom “permanent suspension was a disproportionate action for breaking Twitter rules,” would take 30 days.

Irwin did not acknowledge the previously declared timeframe in her tweet on Tuesday.

Irwin had replied to a thread noting that notable users were still getting locked out of or suspended from Twitter after Elon’s takeover, despite not having violated any rules, but for posting comments that would go against leftist narratives. At the time of writing, many of the accounts had been restored.

As Valiant News reported, a similar pattern occurred with conservative accounts who were locked out for mocking Ukrainian President Zelensky, and his appearance in front of Congress. Some hypothesised that the lock-outs were instituted after “mass-reporting” by “trolls or state actors,” or a rogue Twitter employee.

Alexandre De Moraes Denounced In Inter-American Court on Human Rights

The whistleblowers pointed out in the complaint that Moraes ordered the arrest of journalist Oswaldo Eustáquio and imposed censorship on the social media profiles of both Fugazza and Souza "without any offense committed by any of them."

by ADDISON BASURTO December 28, 2022

Brazilian Federal Supreme Court (STF) Justice and Chief Justice of the Superior Electoral Court (TSE), Alexandre De Moraes, was denounced in the Inter-American Court on Human Rights (IACHR) on Thursday in a complaint filed by comedians Paulo Victor Souza and Bismark Fogazza.

Fogazza fled the country on December 21st along with independent journalist, Oswaldo Eustáquio, both of whom were persecuted by De Moraes.

The IACHR is based in San Jose, Costa Rica.

“The minister’s acts illegally, outside his duties and limits. He cannot pursue people based on opinion and he has no legal standing to do,” the complaint said.

The comedic pair and whistleblowers alleged that Viviane Barci de Moraes, the wife of Moraes, is a partner of former deputy Gabriel Chalita, who is closely connected to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

During the four-year tenure of President Jair Bolsonaro (PL), Moraes ordered the arrest of numerous people, de-banked the financial accounts of individuals, imposed exorbitant fines, and censored conservative social media profiles.

According to the complaint, Moraes refuses to comply with due legal process and makes decisions without the participation of the Public Prosecutor, “which is unconstitutional.”

The whistleblowers pointed out in the complaint that Moraes ordered the arrest of journalist Oswaldo Eustáquio and imposed censorship on the social media profiles of both Fugazza and Souza “without any offense committed by any of them.”

A journalist for the National File was forced to flee the country under armed escort after he and his bodyguard, a British Texas, received threats to their lives from an unverified English-speaking intelligence agency and had a physical altercation with the U.S. State Department.

“No one’s sure of what’s going to happen. Much evidence of fraud and many instances of unconstitutionality. Many bad things happened, but the system is rigged,” a Brazilian said to The National File.

Current Brazilian President, Jair Bolsonaro, is expected to make a speech on Wednesday at 7:00 AM Eastern Standard Time (EST).

Charlie Kirk has been saying this for years

College’s outrageous cost is a ‘scam’ creating a ‘slow-burning crisis,’ research director says

By Teny Sahakian, Fox News

The exorbitant cost of attending college sets students up for failure — and higher education is often a “scam” and unnecessary in some fields, a writer and researcher on market influences and monopolies said.

“I think that the financial aspects of college or higher education have overwhelmed the ability to create a citizenry on a very basic level,” Matt Stoller, a research director at the American Economic Liberties Project, told Fox News. “This is kind of like a slow-burning crisis that we have to look into.”

The average cost of going to a private college — including tuition, fees, books and room and board — went from $2,930 per year in 1971 to $51,690 in 2021, according to data from the nonprofit group College Board. Nearly a third of parents and students believe that college is overpriced, according to a recent Sallie Mae and Ipsos

College Board data show the cost of going to a private college — including tuition, fees, books, and room and board — went from $2,930 per year in 1971 to $51,690 in 2021.

“The Columbia Journalism School is sort of in an existential crisis because they have a nine-month degree that costs $120,000 and they’re like, ‘Are we the problem?’” Stoller said. “Yeah, you guys are the problem. You’re not the only problem. You’re more of a symptom.”

Stoller also sees elite institutions’ high prices as a moneymaking scheme

Columbia University’s prestigious School of Journalism costs $120,000 for the nine-month course.

“There is a scam there,” he told Fox News. “I haven’t been able to figure out what that scam is.”

“That’s what’s causing this problem,” he added.

Undergraduate enrollment declined by over 650,000 students — more than 4% — from the spring of 2021 to 2022, according to a report by the National Student Clearinghouse.

Matt Stoller, a research director, sees elite institutions' high prices as a moneymaking scheme.

Matt Stoller, a research director, sees elite institutions’ high prices as a moneymaking scheme.

“I think that schooling exists to make citizens and to build a moral, self-governing society. Also, it’s there to let you get a job and build a life,” Stoller said. “I think that we’re falling down on all counts of that, and we have to look at why that is.”

Colleges are “such a mess in terms of administrative bloat” and are “saddling people with a lot of debt,” he added. “You can’t come out of a school with lots of debt and be a good citizen — you are now a dependent of someone else.”

Stoller also questioned the necessity of some degrees, like journalism. The high cost associated with journalism school, he said, “shows that it’s just a credentialing mechanism for a social class more than it is like a practical way to think about free expression in a democracy.”

In August, Politico Magazine published a profile on Columbia Journalism School Dean Jelani Cobb. In the piece, “’Are We the Problem?’ The New Dean of Columbia J-School Wrestles With Its Place in the Industry,” Cobb discusses questions over the necessity of journalism school and the state of the industry itself.

The dean who hopes Columbia will “be a pipeline that helps make the [journalism] field more democratic,” himself didn’t attend Columbia’s program.

“Journalism used to be a working-class profession. There’s no rocket science behind writing a news article,” Stoller, who writes weekly newsletters for his own Substack account, told Fox News. “You just figure out what’s going on and you write it down.”

“You need a high school degree for that — that’s it,” he said.
