The Government has decided to act on the price of food via taxes, something that seems much healthier than the pure and simple intervention in the market proposed by the second vice president, Yolanda Díaz. There is no doubt that the measure of lowering the VAT 0% for six months for basic necessities has a good intention and will be an aid for medium and low incomes. But the fact that she is late, when the inflation it has already wreaked havoc on citizens' pockets like never before in four decades and, above all, when the effect of the cut in prices is completely outweighed by the increases.
It is not the first time that the Minister of Finance, María Jesús Montero, ends by decreeing a measure that not long beforeheruled out on the grounds that it was not possible to carry it out, especially with the excuse of a veto of the European Commission which is less and less credible.
