When Air Force veteran Ashli Babbitt was fatally shot by police inside the U.S. Capitol, she fell backward onto Thomas Baranyi, according to court documents. In an interview with a Washington, D.C., television station, Baranyi, wearing a blue New York Giants sweatshirt and a backwards baseball hat, shows the camera blood on his hands and says: “It was a joke to them until we got inside and then all of a sudden, guns came out, but I mean, we’re at a point now, it can’t be allowed to stand. We have to do something. People have to do something, because this could be you or your kids." In the TV interview, which is also detailed in the court documents, Baranyi says, “We tore through the scaffolding, through flash bangs and tear gas, and blitzed our way in through all the chambers just trying to get into Congress or whoever we could get in to and tell them that we need some kind of investigation into this.” In July 2020, Baranyi enlisted in the Marine Corps, but according to the Marines, he "was separated prior to completing entry level training." According to court documents, Zachary Alam was allegedly part of the group on Jan. 6, 2021, that attempted to get inside the Speaker's Lobby, a group which included Ashli Babbitt, the woman who was shot and killed by U.S. Capitol Police. In videos of the incident, there are police officers guarding the door to the Speaker's Lobby. In the video, the person the FBI has identified as Alam can be seen "repeatedly punching the glass panels of the doors immediately behind the officers, causing the glass to splinter," according to court documents. In the video, he allegedly pushes against one of the officers and shouts "f*** the blue" into their faces. The officers eventually move to the side, and Alam allegedly takes a helmet from another rioter and shatters the window that was already splintered and another one to the right. Babbitt was shot trying to climb through one of the shattered panes. Alam later told a relative that he was sorry for what he had done at the Capitol but was not going to turn himself in because "he did not want to go to jail again," according to court documents.SHOW LESS ▲

Federal prosecutors say that Brian Glenn Bingham came to their attention after multiple people who served in the Army with Bingham reported him to law enforcement. On Jan. 6, 2021, charging documents state, Bingham was among the rioters who breached the U.S. Capitol and posted photos from inside the building to Facebook. At one point, he reached the door to the Speaker's Lobby, where a U.S. Capitol Police officer had earlier shot and killed rioter Ashli Babbitt, and Bingham began yelling at police nearby, according to court documents. Bingham also allegedly attacked a police officer inside the Capitol, who was trying to push him out of the building. Footage from surveillance cameras and police body cameras allegedly show Bingham appearing "to throw a punch or a shove at the officer with his right arm" and scratching the officer's eye before other officers pulled him away and Bingham eventually left the building. Prosecutors cite a Facebook message Bingham allegedly sent later that day: "I got to manhandl[e] 5 cops and live to tell."SHOW LESS ▲

As I sat this morning, reeling from yet another school shooting, I found myself wrestling with which actions need to be taken to stop all the madness. What is the answer? Gun control measures? Mental health intervention?
Then I received a message from my daughter who works as a mental health therapist in New Jersey.
She shared a poem she had written, while in the greatest depths of despair. It shook me to my core, and I felt the need to share it:
May 24th, 2022 Uvalde, Texas, written by Melissa Kohberger
Bereft of their laughter
There is now not a sound
As we lower our children into the ground
Small hands and feet
Buried six feet deep into the earth of the world that failed them.
As I read the poem, I thought, whatever the solution, I pray we consider the children before the gun.
