Rituals for Benedict's passing could be template for future ex popes

When Pope Gregory XII, the last pope to resign before Benedict, died in 1417, the world was not watching.

Gregory had stepped down two years earlier in 1415 and spent his remaining days in virtual obscurity hundreds of miles from Rome. He was quietly buried in Recanati, a town near the northern Adriatic coast.

It will be vastly different with the passing of ailing 95-year-old Benedict.

The Vatican has painstakingly elaborate rituals for what happens after a reigning pope dies but no publicly known ones for a former pope. It will be at least partially scripting new protocols. They could be a template for other popes who choose to resign instead of ruling for life, including Pope Francis himself someday, Vatican sources say.

Those for a reigning pope include a 30-page constitution called "Universi Dominici Gregis," Latin for "The Shepherd of the Lord's Whole Flock," and "Ordo Exsequiarum Romani Pontificis," (Funeral Rites for a Roman Pontiff) a missal of more than 400 pages that includes liturgy, music, and prayers.

Those rules say a pope's burial should take place between four and six days after his death as part of a nine-day period of mourning known as the Novendiale.

Vatican officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to discuss such matters, said the script for Benedict's passing would depend on two key elements: If Benedict himself left any instructions and decisions that will be taken by Pope Francis.

>Rituals for Benedict's passing could be template for future ex popes

SOLEMN FAREWELL

Francis has often praised his predecessor as a great pope who had the courage to resign, so he would probably like to give Benedict the most solemn ceremonial farewell as possible, perhaps even the whole works, one Vatican official said.

The last pope to die, John Paul II, was buried on April 8, 2005, six days after he died. His body first laid in state in the frescoed Clementine Hall for Vatican staff and then was moved to St. Peter's Basilica for viewing by the public.

Millions of people queued up for hours to see him, in perhaps the biggest event in Vatican history, and monarchs and presidents attended his funeral.

He was first buried in crypts under St. Peter's Basilica and moved in 2011 to a chapel on the main level of the largest church in Christendom.

Many people would want to pay their respects to Benedict, who succeeded John Paul in 2005 an resigned in 2013, so a period of lying in state would be likely, the sources said.

In 2020, Benedict's authorised biographer, Peter Seewald, was quoted as telling Bavarian newspaper Passauer Neue Presse that the emeritus pope had prepared a spiritual testament stating that he wanted to be buried in the same crypt where John Paul II was originally laid to rest.

Benedict, as Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, presided at John Paul's funeral in 2005 in St. Peter's Square and Francis is expected to preside at Benedict's.

After the death of a reigning pope, the person in charge of ordinary affairs at the Vatican until the election of a new pope is the camerlengo, or chamberlain.

The position is currently held by Irish-American Cardinal Kevin Farrell but because the Church has a pope and there will be no conclave to elect another, Farrell would have no role.

Most of the work, including the scripting of an unprecedented event in Vatican history, will fall to Monsignor Diego Ravelli, the papal master of ceremonies.

The feminist theatre collective Monstress Mess, supported by the prevention project ‘Dunkelfeld’ of Charité Berlin, Hänsel+Gretel Child Protection Foundation and Theater unterm Dach, have created a new theatre piece focusing on the prevention of child sexual abuse.

A MAP’s Tale is inspired by the life of Adam, a non-offending paedophile and a MAP (Minor Attracted Person), whose story is documented in the podcast ‘This American Life’, episode ‘Help Wanted: Tarred & Feathered’ by Luke Malone. It's about a teenage boy who discovers that his sexual orientation is focused on children. From the age of 14, Adam begins the unimaginable task of unpacking what his desires mean for his future, how to access available treatment and find his place in a society that doesn’t acknowledge his existence.

It depicts a young boy who goes through puberty discovering his sexual orientation is focused on children. From the age of 14 he embarks on a never-ending journey of battling his desires, accessing available treatment and finding his place in a society that doesn‘t acknowledge his existence. A MAP’s Tale includes verbatim text from the podcast interviews.

The content of the piece is supported by research conducted with leading mental health professionals in the field of sexual disorders in the world, further interviews with ‘Adam’, Luke Malone as a specialist consultant and contributions from survivor activist and writer Jemima Foxtrot. The story focuses on the prevention of child sexual abuse by raising awareness of the existence of non-offending paedophiles and the importance of offering access to therapeutic treatment, the perspective of survivors of abuse and those close to people who have been victimised. It’s a powerful portrait of how no one in society escapes the far-reaching consequences of this issue.

A MAP’s Tale is documentary theatre intertwined with Sarah Kane-ian in-yer-face stream of consciousness and the deep introspection of Beckett’s Krapp’s Last Tape.

Adam is 19 years old and listening for the first time to the podcast he recorded a few weeks ago where he was interviewed by journalist Luke Malone. Never before has he spoken publicly about his sexual preference disorder. As he listens, the audience accompanies him into his memories of the past, his dreams and nightmares, and his imagined future. A MAP’s Tale delves deep into the psychology of Adam’s inner struggles, exposing the gross oversimplifications and criminal associations that currently shape our perceptions of all MAP’s and kill any discourse around possible ways to prevent child abuse. What does support look like for MAP’s who don’t want to offend? What else can we do to prevent child sexual abuse?

>Monstress Mess

According to the paper 'Pedophilia' by Canadian sexologist and psychologist Dr. Michael C. Seto in the Annual Review of Clinical Psychology, about 1% of the world's male population are paedophiles. (There is very little research on females.) This equates to a population of 76 million people worldwide. Statistically, it is likely that each of us knows at least one person who is a paedophile.

We have been taught that all paedophiles have or will offend sexually against a child. But this isn't the case. Some will but many will not. We need to learn more about those that do offend and what pushes them over the line.

About 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 13 boys experience child sexual abuse.

However, the majority of sexual assaults are never reported and therefore do not appear in any crime statistics. The number of crimes that are not reported and are committed in the so-called ‘dark field’, is highest in the area of child sexual abuse. At the same time, political commitment is focused exclusively on dealing with and punishing offenders from the 'bright field', i.e. legally known and legally convicted sexual offenders.

Survivors can experience depression, PTSD (posttraumatic stress disorder), behavioral consequences including substance abuse, increased risk for perpetration of sexual violence and increased risk of or the attempt of suicide. Especially when left untreated.

A MAP’s Tale has been carefully researched and curated to show how important it is to tackle sexual abuse BEFORE it happens, rather than solely focussing on the sentencing of perpetrators.

Supporting this piece would mean

Encouraging the prevention of child sexual abuse before the abuse happens

Creating awareness around the existence of paedophiles that do not want to offend

Showing the importance of providing access to therapeutic treatment

Creating a space to talk openly about child sexual abuse and its effect on society

To tell this story accurately, sensitively and effectively, Monstress Mess is collaborating with the prevention project ‘Dunkelfeld’ at the Charité Berlin, survivor activist and writer Jemima Foxtrot, journalist Luke Malone and the real ‘Adam’.

The ABC 10News team has lost an important member of our family.

Erica Gonzalez, one of our talented morning show producers, passed away overnight.

Gonzalez was a creative and passionate person who not only served our viewers, but her country as well.

The three biggest loves in her life were her family, the flag and the Friars.

She was a proud mother to her son, Brandon; she glowed as she talked about his achievements in high school. One of her best days was when he graduated in April.

The two shared a passion for Padres Baseball, attending many games at Petco amongst the Friar Faithful. One of her favorite players was Mister Padre Tony Gwynn. She also loved San Diego Chargers legend Junior Seau.

When the United States was reeling from the tragedy of 9/11, Erica was compelled to join the Marine Corps. She served proudly for eight years.

As the old mantra goes: Once a Marine, always a Marine. Erica was behind the coverage of many ABC 10News military stories that aired in 2022.

Erica attended Grossmont College and graduated from San Diego State. Most early mornings in the newsroom, you'd find her typing away with her Aztec hat on.

Years before becoming a full time producer, Erica interned with Team 10, our station's investigative unit.

News was in her blood, and after spending some time producing in her hometown of El Paso, Texas, she couldn't wait to get back to San Diego earlier this year.

A friend to many, Erica's dry sense of humor made the news team laugh in the early morning hours, and will forever stay with those who loved and cared about her.

If you'd like to support the Gonzalez family during this difficult time, you can head to their GoFundMe page here.

FTX mogul held other White House meetings in spring, logs show

Sam Bankman-Fried, the now-disgraced cryptocurrency mogul, held at least four meetings with senior White House officials this year — part of a push to influence crypto policy and build connections in Washington before his FTX empire ultimately collapsed.

Bankman-Fried met Sept. 8 with Steve Ricchetti, one of President Joe Biden’s senior advisers, White House officials familiar with the matter said. The meeting, previously unreported, was the latest in a handful of sessions.

Former Pope Benedict, hero to Catholic conservatives, dies

Former Pope Benedict, the first pontiff in 600 years to resign and a standard bearer for conservatives who yearned for a more traditional Church, died on Saturday, ending an extraordinary period in which two men wearing white lived in the Vatican.

Benedict, 95, died in a former monastery where he had lived since his shock resignation in 2013.

Bells tolled in Rome as news of his death, which followed a rapid decline in his health over Christmas, spread to the faithful on an unusually warm winter's day. Many went to pray in St. Peter's Square on hearing the news.

"Now we will only have one pope. I must say that Pope Ratzinger was a charismatic pope, humble but above all a great theologian," said French tourist Emilie Gaillard, using Benedict's family name.

The Vatican said his body would lie in state from Monday in St. Peter's Basilica and that Pope Francis will preside at his funeral on Thursday morning in the same square where Benedict, who was then Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, said the funeral Mass for his predecessor, Pope John Paul II, in 2005.

"With sorrow I inform you that the Pope Emeritus, Benedict XVI, passed away today at 9:34 in the Mater Ecclesiae Monastery in the Vatican," Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni said.

"Following the desire of the Pope Emeritus, the funeral will take place in a sign of simplicity," Bruni said, adding that the service would be "solemn and sober".

The Vatican has painstakingly elaborate rituals for what happens after a reigning pope dies but no publicly known ones for a former pope - one of the many complications created by Benedict's resignation.

Pope Francis disclosed on Wednesday that his predecessor was "very sick". Bruni said Benedict had received last rites, once known as Extreme Unction and now called "the anointing of the sick", on the same day.

Leaders were swift in sending their condolences for Benedict, who was the first German pope in 1,000 years.

"We mourn the death of our Bavarian Pope," said Markus Soeder, premier of Benedict's home state. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said on Twitter that the world had lost "a formative figure of the Catholic Church".

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni hailed Benedict as "a great man who history will not forget", while Polish President Andrzej Duda called him "one of the greatest theologians of the 20th and 21st centuries".

French President Emmanuel Macron said Benedict had "worked with all his soul and intelligence for a more fraternal world".

Britain's King Charles said he remembered his meeting with Benedict with fondness and noted "his constant efforts to promote peace and goodwill to all people, and to strengthen the relationship between the global Anglican Communion and the Roman Catholic Church."

SCANDALS AND LEAKS

For nearly 25 years, as Cardinal Ratzinger, Benedict was the powerful head of the Vatican's doctrinal office, then known as the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF) and considered one of the Church's greatest theologians.

In that role, he crushed dissent by Liberation Theologians, saying they were mixing Marxist thought and Christianity.

He was elected pope on April 19, 2005 to succeed the widely popular John Paul, who had reigned for 27 years. Cardinals chose him from among their number seeking continuity and what one called "a safe pair of hands".

Child abuse scandals hounded most of his papacy but he is credited with jump-starting the process to discipline or defrock predator priests after a more lax attitude under his predecessor.

But Benedict himself acknowledged that he was a weak administrator, saying he showed a "lack of resolve in governing and decision taking" during his eight-year papacy which was marked by missteps, particularly in relations with Islam and Judaism.

The year before his resignation was dominated by the "Vatileaks" scandal, in which private papal documents appeared in the media, exposing a dysfunctional Vatican riven with internal strife, corruption and feuding.

TWO "POPES", ONE VATICAN

He announced he was resigning in Latin at a routine meeting of cardinals. Many had no idea what he had said and it took time before the news sank in. He himself said he was no longer strong enough to lead the Church due to his "advanced age".

After his resignation he installed himself in a converted convent on the Vatican grounds and chose the title "pope emeritus".

Although he said he would remain "hidden from the world" in his retirement, Benedict sometimes caused controversy and spread confusion through his writings and interviews.

Although he rarely appeared in public, Catholic conservatives looked to the former pope as their standard bearer and some ultra-traditionalists even refused to acknowledge Francis as a legitimate pontiff.

They have criticised Francis for his more welcoming approach to members of the LGBTQ+ community and to Catholics who divorced and remarried outside the Church, saying both were undermining traditional values.

Despite the difficulties that emerged from having two men wearing white in the Vatican, Francis developed a warm relationship with Benedict, and said it was like having a grandfather living in the house.
