After law school, Comey served as a law clerk for then-United States District Judge John M. Walker, Jr. in Manhattan, and worked for Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher in their New York Office. He next joined the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York, where he worked from 1987 to 1993, eventually serving as Deputy Chief of the Criminal Division. Note: Rudolph Giuliani was his boss at the U.S. Attorney’s office.
1996 - 2001, Served as Managing Assistant U.S. Attorney in charge of the Richmond Division of the United States Attorney's office for the Eastern District of Virginia.
December 2003 Named Deputy Attorney General - three weeks later he took over the investigation into then president bush's administration concerning the leaking of the name of a Valarie Plame, a CIA agent at the time.
It should be noted that then attorney general, John Ashcroft, had been pressured for months by the Democrats, led by none other than Charles Schumer, to remove himself from the case (my guess would be because they knew James Comey would then take it over). Comey's first act in that role was to name Patrick Fitzgerald, a friend and former colleague as head of the Special Council he immediately formed.
It should also be noted that Schumer had helped Comey become U.S. Attorney in New York in 2001.
