A few years ago anon learned how to build computers from raw materials, and learned something very interesting and unexpected in the process: Even some of what we consider to be cutting edge scientific techniques are actually far older than they might seem. Specifically I took notice of the "Physical Vapour Deposition" (PVD) technique, where metal is heated to evaporation within a chamber and rises to settle in neat layers upon a substrate suspended above. The thing is, while the equipment used has improved markedly, that's actually still the original technique that man used to first smelt metals.
