Q, if the FBI is not producing stuff that Congress is asking for, can't the NSA just reach into its "backup tapes" and hand it over? After all, aren't FBI and NSA both part of the executive branch? We know you guys have everything. It's not like that's a secret anymore.

No, what law prevents the federal government from keeping its own "backups"? My comms as a private citizen are beyond lawful grasp. But not if I'm a federal employee using federal resources.

Perhaps using gmail protects them, which is why they would use it. Just seems to me that since it's no secret that NSA has everything, and that they were federal employees employed by we the people, and that when they took the job they knew that all their job related comms belonged to we the people, and that the people's NSA would be keeping track of everything, that's its not unreasonable to just reach into the NSA's backups to get what already belongs to we the people.
