Anon may be off slightly geographically but some few years ago a call was received. There was a large tract of landlocked land thereabouts with 14 heirs, turned out (outta nowhere) anon was one of them and a developer wanted it so all had to agree to sell land bought back in the time of the Great Grandparents. Anon never knew it existed but cash is cash and they spent a lot to find anon to sign on the dotted line.

Did the Omnibus backfire?

January 4, 2023

One of my assumptions during the omnibus fiasco in December was that Mitch McConnell went along with funding the government for a longer period than was necessary (including funding the war in Ukraine) in part as an effort to bail out Kevin McCarthy. McConnell knew that McCarthy had a very narrow majority that depended upon the votes of restive groups. Some of those folks wanted a serious effort to use a government shutdown or debt-ceiling fight to extract concessions that the House cannot gain in any way other than by refusing to act; some wanted the same, but for the public spectacle; some wanted to rebel against the bipartisan consensus on Ukraine.

Either way, with McCarthy still needing to nail down support for his Speakership and with Republicans not wanting to lurch immediately in January into a fight that would play to all the worst aspects of the party’s image, McConnell and the other omnibus backers may have thought they could give McCarthy a breather to get settled in, get all the committees assigned and running, and do some publicly positive things first.

If that was the plan, it backfired spectacularly — at least from McCarthy’s perspective. With no policy to fight over at the outset and unhappy that they had issues taken off the table before gaining the majority, the insurgents went directly for McCarthy’s head instead. He can’t make concessions to save himself because he lacks issues upon which to do so.

McConnell may have intended to light a victory cigar for his fellow Republican leader, but as of now, it seems he handed him a cigarette and a blindfold instead.

Fresh blow for Trump as judge rules ex-president must face NY fraud trial this fall, hours before president's ban on bump stocks was struck down

NY judge said former President Trump faces a lawsuit by the state AG accusing him fraudulently overvaluing his real estate company's assets and own net worth

Sheboon General Letitia Jameshad sued Trump, his adult children Donald Jr., Eric and Ivanka and the Trump Organization last September

The alleged scheme inflated Trump's assets by billions of dollars through a decade of lies to banks and insurers in what James called a 'staggering' fraud

A US appeals court also struck down a Trump-era rule banning bump stocks which allow people to rapidly fire multiple rounds from semi-automatic guns

The ban on bump stocks was introduced after a gunman used them in killing 58 people at an October 2017 country music concert in Las Vegas

January 7, 2023

Donald Trump faced a double blow as a Manhattan judge on Friday scolded the former president's lawyers and ruled he must face trial for fraud - hours before the Trump-era ban on bump stocks was struck down.

Judge Arthur Engoron said lawyers for Trump and his Trump Organization 'should have known better' than to recycle what he said were frivolous, meritless arguments in paperwork seeking the dismissal of New York Attorney General Letitia James´ lawsuit.

James, a Democrat, sued Trump, his adult children Donald Jr., Eric and Ivanka and the Trump Organization last September and is seeking $250 million and a permanent ban on the former president doing business in New York state.

The news of the fraud case came hours before aTrump administration ban on bump stocks - devices that enable a shooter to rapidly fire multiple rounds from semi-automatic weapons after an initial trigger pull - was struck down by a federal appeals court in New Orleans.

The ban was instituted after a gunman perched in a high-rise hotel using bump stock-equipped weapons massacred dozens of people in Las Vegas in 2017. (bullshit if it was, those dudes in the helicopters didn't use bumpstocks)

In the fraud case, Judge Arthur Engoron criticized the Trump lawyers throughout his nine-page decision, even quoting baseball great Yogi Berra by writing that the bulk of their arguments - including Trump's oft-repeated claim that the lawsuit was part of a politically motivated 'witch hunt' - were 'deja vu all over again.'

Engoron rejected defense claims that James waited too long to sue, fell short of establishing fraud, and should have better justified the $250 million of damages she is seeking.

He also said Ivanka Trump could be sued despite her claims she had not falsified valuations and not worked for the Trump Organization since 2017, saying she could be liable for participating in 'continuing wrongs.'

The judge also decided not to sanction the defendants for making arguments including that James was pursuing a political 'witch hunt' and lacked legal authority to sue.

'Sophisticated defense counsel should have known better,' Engoron wrote nonetheless.

The lawsuit, filed in September, alleges Trump and the Trump Organization misled banks and others about the value of prized assets, including golf courses and hotels bearing his name.

'Once again, Donald Trump's attempts to evade the law have been rejected,' James said in a statement.
