Mental decompensation in my case came from 1. Lack of sleep, 2. Nightmares from ptsd 3. Loss of any familial support (wife left and took kids) 4. Substance abuse to cope with overwhelming anxiety 5. Two components to ptsd: childhood trauma and moral injury. The first led me to put myself in situations where the second could occur. When you think you are damned and worthless for decades you make that your reality. Only God’s love (Jesus) was able to save me. No human power could. Not even my own.

That has been my experience in all respects as well. And yes, I was massively over medicated which led me to have uncontrollable shaking for almost six weeks straight. It was hellish.

Fortunately rare. The truly evil. Never encountered any of those, lots who were lost doing messed up things that in their lucid moments brought them to uncontrolled sobbing.
