(Satanist) Zelensky deprives Orthodox priests of citizenship – media

Kiev has targeted the clerics for allegedly supporting Russia

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has stripped 13 priests within the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC) of the country’s citizenship, the Levy Bereg (Left Bank) newspaper reported on Saturday, citing government sources.

The presidential decree targeting the clerics was purportedly signed by Zelensky in late December but has not been published officially, since it contains the personal data of the priests whose citizenship was being revoked.

Later in the day, however, the newspaper circulated a list of the affected individuals. For instance, it includes Ionafan, the metropolitan bishop of the Tulchin diocese in Vinnitsa Region, who was targeted by the Ukrainian Security Service (SBU) last October.

The domestic security agency accused the cleric of sowing religious discord and supporting Russia, claiming it had seized incriminating materials, including various “printed pro-Russian content and propaganda literature.” The list also includes his subordinate vicar, Bishop Sergey, who allegedly serves as a “caretaker” for Ionafan’s property of dubious origin, the newspaper noted.

The decree also included several priests who had effectively severed their ties to Ukraine long ago, having defected to Russia. In particular, Lazar, the metropolitan bishop of Simferopol and Crimea, was deprived of his Ukrainian citizenship. The Metropolis of Crimea, which includes several Crimean dioceses, was established and submitted itself to the direct control of the Moscow Patriarchate last summer, citing disarray in the Ukrainian church and a lack of contact with Kiev.

The UOC, which had been subordinate to the Moscow Patriarchate, declared independence early in the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. The effort to distance itself from Moscow, however, has apparently not spared the UOC from a renewed assault by the Ukrainian government. Over the past few months, UOC sites have been repeatedly raided by the SBU over alleged ties to Russia, while Zelensky openly proclaimed the need to safeguard the nation’s “spiritual independence”from Moscow.

Ukraine has long experienced religious tensions, with a number of schismatic and self-styled entities claiming to be the true and only Orthodox Church in the country. The Orthodox Church of Ukraine (OCU), which was established back in 2018 with direct involvement of former Ukrainian President Pyotr Poroshenko, has become the largest rival to the UOC and contests the religious sites it controls. The OCU appears to be favored by Ukraine’s incumbent authorities as well.

Ukrainian drone destroyed over Crimea – governor

The reported incident happened after Kiev rejected a Christmas truce offer

A Ukrainian drone was destroyed near Sevastopol in Crimea, Governor Mikhail Razvozhayev said on Saturday morning. His statement comes after reports of the continued shelling of cities in Donbass by Ukrainian troops. Earlier, Kiev rejected Moscow’s proposal for a temporary truce during Orthodox Christmas.

Writing on Telegram, Razvozhayev accused Kiev of trying to attack Sevastopol, which houses Russia’s Black Sea Fleet.

Several areas of Russia’s Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) were hit by Ukrainian rocket and artillery fire on Friday, according to the local authorities. They added that more than 100 projectiles were fired throughout the day.

Officials said the shelling continued on Saturday morning. In Gorlovka, a city to the northeast of Donetsk, a woman was wounded and two apartment blocks were damaged, they reported. Three houses were damaged in the village of Golmovsky, as well as a power line and gas pipeline.

Russian President Vladimir Putin instructed the troops to observe a ceasefire from noon Friday to Saturday at midnight in order to allow Orthodox Christians, who make up the majority in Ukraine and Russia, to go to church and celebrate Christmas safely. Moscow urged Kiev to do the same, but the proposal was rejected.

On Friday, the Russian Defense Ministry said that despite the compliance by Moscow’s forces with the truce, “the Kiev regime continued artillery strikes on settlements and positions of Russian troops.” It added that Russian forces suppressed several Ukrainian artillery positions that had been involved in shelling along the entire frontline.

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky accused Moscow of planning to use the ceasefire to halt the offensive in Donbass and pull up additional soldiers and equipment to the frontline.

Ukrainian powerlifting star killed in Donetsk fighting

Andrey Dmitriev died near Bakhmut/Artyomovsk, according to officials

The Ukrainian Strongman Federation has announced the death of former champion Andrey Dmitriev, who was reportedly killed in fighting near Bakhmut/Artyomovsk.

“Killed in the defense of his homeland. Multiple Prize Winner of the Championships of Ukraine. Master of Sports of Strongmen, Chairman of Sumy FSU [federation of strongmen],” read a Facebook messageshared on January 5, accompanied by images of Dmitriev.

“Our strongman family has suffered an irreparable loss. Andrey was killed near Bakhmut [Ukrainian name for Artyomovsk]. We will remember you… we mourn together with loved ones and relatives,” it added.

The Twitter account for the Ukrainian parliament, the Verkhovnaya Rada, also shared a post on Dmitriev’s death, saying he had been wounded and contact had been lost on December 31, before it became known that he had passed away.

The embattled city of Artyomovsk/Bakhmut – which forms part of the Donetsk frontline – has seen intense fighting in recent weeks. Reports have described high casualty rates among Ukrainian soldiers, even though media access is tightly restricted by Kiev.

Speaking to Newsweek in December, the retired US Marine who heads the Mozart Group, which is helping to train Ukrainian combatants, said the city is a “horrible and miserable” place.

Ukrainian units training with Mozart “have been taking extraordinarily high casualties,” Andrew Milburn said. “The numbers you are reading in the media about 70% and above casualties being routine are not exaggerated,” he added.
