Kinda makes me wanna correlate that with inflation.

Carthage was weakened when it couldn't pay it's armed forces due to massive inflation.

Rome was weakened again, to inflation.

Germany was crippled by inflation.

Weimar weakened by the equivalent of Walmart and Amazon shutting down.

Now the US.

 

But it's just a Hypothesis rn.

History makes it sound like the Romans decadence and Hedonism was their undoing, but really it does look as if they were motivated by fame and glory by conquering lands for the empire (Look at how many busts were in homes) during the Hannibal Barca era. So Even though your Slavery point stands, it may have been more subversion then outright economic stress.
