Penn State to research automated driving systems operability & safety
WASHINGTON, DC – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) was recently awarded a $8,409,444 Automated Driving System Demonstration Grantby the U.S. Department of Transportation,to test the safe integration of automated driving systems within work zones.
In May of 2019, Thompson was joined by nine Members of the Pennsylvania Congressional Delegation in expressing their support ofPennDOT’s grant application to U.S. Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao(Letter Attached).
“As driving technologies advance, safety must be at the forefront of these innovations,” said Rep. Glenn ‘GT’ Thompson (PA-15).“PennDOT, working in coordination with Penn State’s Transportation Institute, will research automated driving and work to ensure a safe future for all drivers and passengers, while continue to promote Pennsylvania as a leader in the field of automated driving systems.” added Thompson.
PennDOT will use the grant to explore safe integration of Automated Driving Systems into work zones by examining connectivity, visibility, and high-definition mapping technologies.
Eric Donnell, Ph.D and Director of the Thomas D. Larson Pennsylvania Transportation Institute, elaborated on the University’s research plans.
“Penn State scientists will deploy a high-definition van to collect data and map work zone configurations. These maps and data will then be used to simulate how connected and autonomous vehicles impact traffic flow and safety across a variety of operational scenarios,” said Donnell. “Solutions developed by our team will be tested at the Thomas D. Larson Pennsylvania Transportation Institute’s closed-loop test track, and ultimately applied in work zones across the Commonwealth. We appreciate Congressman Thompson’s support of Penn State’s transportation research that contributes to the University’s land-grant mission.”
