FIFA president questioned by prosecutors

Gianni Infantino is being probed as part of a criminal investigation

Gianni Infantino, the president of world football’s governing body FIFA, met with Swiss special prosecutors on Tuesday amid a probe into his alleged meetings with the country’s attorney general as part of a wider investigation of football officials.

Recommendations of criminal proceedings against Infantino were issued in 2020 by another special prosecutor, who has since been removed from the case by a federal court in Switzerland amid links into possible incitements to commit abuse of public office and breaches of official secrecy.

Special prosecutor Hans Maurer confirmed to the Associated Press that “a confrontation hearing was held in the proceedings,” which he held alongside another prosecutor, Ulrich Weder.

“However, I do not comment on the time, scope and purpose of this hearing,” Maurer added.

The investigation centers around three undisclosed meetings which were allegedly held in 2016 and 2017 between Infantino and then-attorney general Michael Lauber, soon after Infantino was elected as FIFA president and after American and Swiss investigations into Infantino’s predecessor Sepp Blatter.

When questioned by the media about the meetings in 2018, both Infantino and Lauber claimed to have no memory of the issues which were discussed.

Lauber was later removed from his position when it was alleged that he had obstructed prosecutors who were attempting to discover more information about the subject of the meetings with Infantino.

FIFA has not commented on the latest development but said previously that “both FIFA and the FIFA president are fully available to cooperate with the authorities, whether that concerns meetings that the FIFA president had with the former attorney general of Switzerland, or anything else.”

Infantino is set to be re-elected to FIFA’s top job in March after running unopposed for the position for another four-year term, provided he passes an eligibility and integrity check as part of the process.

Kash Patel Says Jan. 6 Committee Buried Key Evidence From His Testimony

As the former chief of staff to the Defense Department under the Trump administration, Kash Patel was one of the first people the now-shuttered House Jan. 6 Committee sought testimony from in its investigation of the Capitol breach.

Despite this, the transcript of his deposition was one of the last to be released as the committee concluded its work, and the reason, according to Patel, was simple.

“I gave them the hard truths that they didn’t want the answers to because it didn’t fit their political narrative,” he told The Epoch Times’ Jan Jekielek on the Jan. 6 episode of his Kash’s Corner podcast.

Burying the Evidence

Revisiting the events of Jan. 6, 2021, and the aftermath, Patel held that the committee failed to abide by its own rules when it excluded the exhibits he and his legal team entered into the record during his deposition.

Among those exhibits, of which Patel said there were roughly nine, was a key report (pdf) released in November 2021 by the Biden Defense Department (DoD), which concluded that the actions the department took under the Trump administration to prepare for the Jan. 6 protests were “appropriate” and “complied with laws, regulations, and other applicable guidance.”

Lesion Above Jill Biden’s Right Eye Found to be Cancerous

Jill Biden had a lesion removed from above her right eye on Wednesday.

White House physician Dr. O’Connor discovered the lesion during a routine skin cancer screening.

Jill Biden had the surgery on Wednesday at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Maryland.

The lesion was found to be cancerous.

The doctor also found another ‘area of concern’ on the left side of Jill Biden’s chest.

ABC News reported:

First lady Jill Biden underwent an outpatient procedure at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center on Wednesday to remove a small lesion above her right eye that was found to be cancerous.

“All cancerous tissue was successfully removed, and the margins were clear of any residual skin cancer cells,” White House Physician Dr. Kevin O’Connor said in a memo to the first lady’s press secretary Vanessa Valdivia released Wednesday afternoon. “We will monitor the area closely as it heals, but do not anticipate any more procedures will be needed.”

The physician also noted that during her pre-op examination, an “additional area of concern” was identified on the left side of her chest, which was “consistent with potential basal cell carcinoma” and also removed using Mohs surgery. O’Connor said basal carcinoma cells don’t tend to metastasize, as other skin cancers do.

“As anticipated, the First Lady is experiencing some facial swelling and bruising but is in good spirits and feeling well,” O’Connor said.

Michigan: Hamtramck City Council Oks Islamic Animal Sacrifices at Home to Appease Muslim Community

Michigan – The Hamtramck city council on Tuesday voted to okay Islamic animal sacrifice at home to appease the Muslim community.

Dawud Walid, the director of the terror-tied Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR), Michigan chapter, said of the animal sacrifice, “it’s not something new or novel.”

“This is when Muslims recognize Abraham sacrificing a sheep instead of having to sacrifice his son,” Walid said.

According to the Detroit Free Press, more than half of the 28,000 people living in Hamtramck are Yemeni or Bangladeshi.

AP reported:

Residents of a Detroit-area community with a large Muslim population can sacrifice animals at home for religious reasons.

The Hamtramck City Council explicitly approved the practice, 3-2, Tuesday, another step in recognizing a cultural shift in a city whose 20th century history was shaped by Polish immigrants.

Muslims often slaughter animals, typically goats or sheep, or pay someone to do it for them during the holy holiday of Eid al-Adha. Meat is shared with family, friends and the poor.

The Hamtramck council in December had voted to continue a ban on animal slaughter but reversed course, at least for religious reasons, after legal advice and objections from people who follow the Islamic faith, the Detroit Free Press reported.

“If somebody wants to do it, they have a right to do their practice,” council member Mohammed Hassan said.

FAA Reveals Cause of System Outage Following Preliminary Probe

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced on Wednesday that normal air traffic operations in the United States were resuming after an overnight computer outage that grounded thousands of flights.

The FAA explained that the system known as Notice to Air Missions (NOTAM), which contains crucial information for those involved in flight operations, had experienced a failure.

“The FAA is continuing a thorough review to determine the root cause of the Notice to Air Missions (NOTAM) system outage,” the FAA said in a statement. “Our preliminary work has traced the outage to a damaged database file. At this time, there is no evidence of a cyber attack. The FAA is working diligently to further pinpoint the causes of this issue and take all needed steps to prevent this kind of disruption from happening again.”

The White House has also stated that there was no indication that the outage was caused by a cyberattack.

Nevertheless, President Joe Biden has ordered the Department of Transportation to conduct a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the outage.

According to online flight tracker FlightAware, as of 10:17 a.m. ET, there were 5,417 delayed flights within, to, and out of the U.S. Additionally, 924 flights were cancelled.

The water cycle is changing, which means dramatic climate swings could be on the cards

As La Niña caused flooding rains in Australia it intensified droughts in the Americas, a first-of-its-kind report helmed by Australian scientists has found.

The report, released today by the Global Water Monitor Consortium and led by The Australian National University (ANU), found global warming is changing the water cycle across the planet.

In 2022 the water cycle was dominated by warm ocean waters in the western Pacific, eastern and northern Indian Ocean as air temperature over land followed the long-term warming trend, and air humidity declined.

This in turn fuelled extreme natural disasters across the globe.

Warm ocean temperatures led to the formation of a severe heatwave in South Asia early in the year, followed by an extreme monsoon that caused massive floods in Pakistan.

The year also coincided with the rise of "flash droughts" - dry spells which rapidly develop within a few months following severe heatwaves - across Europe and China.

Lead author Professor Albert van Dijk warned events like flash droughts and extreme floods, will become more frequent as the water cycle shifts.

"If La Niña or El Niño patterns are going to stay around longer in future, that is going to cause a lot of trouble, with worse, longer droughts and worse floods alike," he said.

"It's a safe prediction that we will see more and more of these heatwaves and flash droughts.

"We also see evidence of the impact of global warming on glaciers and the water cycle in cold regions, and in fact melting glaciers contributed to the Pakistan floods.

"That will continue until those glaciers are gone."

One can't talk about 2022 without making reference to the fact it was the third La Niña year in a row.

While three consecutive years are unusual it isn't entirely unprecedented, but as the water cycle shifts it remains unclear whether back-to-back events are now the norm.

"The jury is still out on whether those three La Niña years were a statistical fluke or the first signs of something more sinister," Van Dijk said.

To collate their findings researchers combined water measurements from thousands of ground stations and by satellites, producing up-to-date information on rainfall, air temperature and humidity, soil water, river flows and the volume of water in natural and artificial lakes.
