You can run, you can hide: The epidemiology and statistical mechanics of zombies

 

Abstract

We use a popular fictional disease, zombies, in order to introduce techniques used in modern epidemiology modeling, and ideas and techniques used in the numerical study of critical phenomena. We consider variants of zombie models, from fully connected continuous time dynamics to a full scale exact stochastic dynamic simulation of a zombie outbreak on the continental United States. Along the way, we offer a closed form analytical expression for the fully connected differential equation, and demonstrate that the single person per site two dimensional square lattice version of zombies lies in the percolation universality class. We end with a quantitative study of the full scale US outbreak, including the average susceptibility of different geographical regions.

Mr. Gary Wang most recently served as the Army Deputy Chief Information Officer/G-6. Wang moved from his position as Director of Intelligence Systems and Architectures, Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Intelligence, where he has had executive oversight for numerous intelligence programs across the armed services and defense agencies since 2012.

 

In Army circles, he is best known as the change agent who will help the Army accelerate to the modern, secure and globally-available network needed now and for the future.

 

Wang, was also a member of the Senior Executive Service since 2005, served as an SES in several roles at the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command (SPAWAR). He was Director of Corporate Operations and Command Information Officer after being the SPAWAR’s Science and Technology national competency lead. Earlier, he was the Chief Technology Officer and Director of the Science, Technology and Engineering Department at SPAWAR Systems Center Pacific.

 

He began his federal career in 1983 at the Naval Underwater Systems Center as a project engineer. From 2001 to 2004, he was Program Manager for Intelligence, Surveillance, Reconnaissance, and Information Operations, responsible for development and acquisition of Navy cryptologic, meteorological, operational effects, and intelligence programs.

 

Wang also served as Executive Assistant for IT at the Program Executive Office for Space Communications and Sensors, Division Director for Technology Transition, and Assistant Program Manager for Combat Direction Finding. Prior to that position, he served as a test and evaluation director and software manager for signals intelligence programs.

Biden's chief science officer, who oversaw COVID response, to retire

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced Friday that David Kessler, the chief science officer overseeing the U.S.'s COVID response, is set to retire after serving as a key adviser to President Biden.

 

Why it matters: Kessler served as head of Operation Warp Speed, the federal program aimed at developing and distributing COVID vaccines and treatments, and facilitated efforts to expand the number of vaccination sites across the U.S.

 

Kessler also worked with companies like Moderna to provide enough vaccines to the global initiative COVAX during his time in the White House. His team faced criticism for the U.S.'s failure to supply enough vaccines to the rest of the world.

Kessler led the Food and Drug Administration as commissioner from 1990 to 1997 and played a key role in helping combat the AIDS crisis. His retirement is effective next week.

What they're saying: "For decades, Dr. Kessler has worked tirelessly to address our nation’s most challenging public health issues, and his work during the COVID-19 pandemic has been no different," HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra said in a statement.

 

"Whether he was leading our effort to develop and distribute safe and effective COVID-19 vaccines and treatments, or sharing his perspective during daily strategy sessions and data deliberations, Dr. Kessler’s contributions to our COVID-19 response have helped save lives. I am grateful for the wisdom he has shared with us and wish him the best in his future endeavors."

The big picture: It's unclear if HHS will replace Kessler or phase out his role amid pressure to end the COVID-19 public health emergency.

 

Public health experts have warned of yet another potential COVID wave in the U.S. as the newest Omicron variant XBB.1.5 — nicknamed Kraken — spreads across the country.

An HHS spokesperson said in a statement that the department "has a team of doctors, scientists, and public health officials … that will continue to work in close coordination with the White House and private industry on research and development" to protect Americans from COVID.
