Tragic: Just Hours After Celebrating National Championship, Georgia Player and Staffer Killed in Car Crash

Just hours after celebrating Georgia’s National Championship, Georgia offensive lineman Devin Willock, 20, and staffer Chandler LeCroy, 24 were killed in a car crash. Two others were injured in the tragedy.

Fox News reports:

Two members of the Georgia Bulldogs football program were killed in a car crash and two others were injured early Sunday, just hours after the squad celebrated back-to-back national championships.

The UGA Athletic Association identified the victims of the car crash in Athens, Georgia, as offensive lineman Devin Willock, 20, and Chandler LeCroy, 24 – who was a member of the recruiting staff. The organization said two others who were injured were in stable condition. They were not immediately identified.

Fox News shared heartbroken head coach Kirby Smart’s statement.

“We are all heartbroken and devastated with the loss of Devin Willock and Chandler LeCroy,” Smart said in a statement. “Devin was an outstanding young man in every way and was always smiling. He was a great teammate and a joy to coach. Chandler was a valuable member of our football staff and brought an incredible attitude and energy every single day. We grieve with their families for this tragic loss and will support them in every way possible.”

Willock was a passenger in an SUV that crashed in Athens around 2:45 a.m. local time, police said. The vehicle was traveling in the outside lane when it left the roadway and struck two power poles and several trees, according to authorities.

According to FOX 5 Atlanta, Willock was dead at the scene. LeCroy, who was the driver, was transported to the hospital where she later died, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Willock, a redshirt sophomore from New Milford, New Jersey, was a backup offensive lineman on the Bulldogs who played in every regular season game. He also played in the SEC Championship and in both College Football Playoff games.

WHO asks China to continue releasing COVID data after country reports nearly 60,000 deaths

China admitted that nearly 60,000 people had died with COVID since early December.

The World Health Organization asked China to continue to release COVID-19 data after the country reported that nearly 60,000 people have died with the virus since early December.

WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus spoke with China’s National Health Commission Minister Ma Xiaowei on Saturday about the virus in China, the United Nations health organization said.

"WHO appreciates this meeting, as well as the public release of information on the overall situation," the agency said.

China on Saturday said nearly 60,000 people had died with COVID-19 since Dec. 8, The Associated Press reported. Those numbers do not include people who died at home. Additionally, China's definition of COVID deaths is far more narrow than many other areas of the world. Just 5,503 of the deaths were listed as being from COVID respiratory failure while the remaining deaths were due to COVID combined with other ailments.

"WHO requested that this type of detailed information continue to be shared with us and the public. WHO notes the efforts by Chinese authorities to scale up clinical care for its population at all levels, including in critical care," the health agency said.

Before Saturday, China had said that its official COVID death toll rose by single digits since ending its "zero-COVID" policies on Dec. 7.
