From Mike Fanone this morning:
I want to thank you all for the tremendous kindness and generosity that you have shown me — it is far beyond anything that I could have imagined — and the level of support that I have received from so many people is overwhelming. The contributions will be used by my family as I continue my transition to new employment from my many years of service as a police officer, and will give us the means to help our family heal emotionally, and help my four daughters recover from what they saw their father go through on Jan. 6, and in its continuing aftermath. Your actions and words have brought a level of comfort to me during this challenging time that I am incredibly grateful for, and it has made me want to fight even harder for our democracy.
I believe it is now time to take down the page. I am so fortunate for the extraordinary generosity provided, but I know there are much worthier causes that need assistance beyond just myself and my family. Your actions have provided me security for the foreseeable future and I am so grateful to you all, but It would just not be the person that I am to accept any more generosity going forward, when I know that I was just doing my job on January 6, like so many other officers.
I promise you all that I will never stop speaking out for truth and accountability, and that my family and I will never forget the enormous kindness and generosity you have shown us, and you will always have a special place in our hearts.
Having been an undercover officer, Fanone’s anonymity was blown and he was unable to return to the job he dedicated his life to and loved so much. For simply telling the truth about what happened on that horrific day, Mike was threatened and harassed by fellow officers and former friends when he returned from medical leave. This forced him to walk away from a twenty-year career with the DC Metro Police department, without pension or benefits.
Since then, Mike has only been able to find part-time work as an analyst on CNN. This provides no benefits or healthcare coverage for him and his family. At every job he’s applied for since January 6th, Mike’s been told that, while he is a hero, he is “too polarizing a figure” for them to offer him employment.
