asic Understanding of Sikhism

• Sikhism is the world's fifth largest religion in the world and the third largest

monotheistic religion in the world .

• Sikhs believes in one omnipresent, formless God. Sikhs commonly call God, Waheguru

(Wa-HEY-guru).

• Sikhs regard men and women as equal in all spheres of life

• Sikhs believe in equality amongst all human beings regardless of race or caste.

• The freedom to choose and practice religion freely is at the foundation of Sikhism. We

believe that there are many paths to God and many avenues to seek truth.

• Sikhs are expected to perform community service, and share with those less fortunate.

• Observant Sikhs five articles of faith - Kesh (uncut hair), Kirpan (a ceremonial sword),

Kara (an iron bracelet), Kanga (comb), and Kachha (breeches).

Guru Nanak Teachings…

 

  1. Vaand Chhako: Sharing whatever God has given you with others and helping those who are in need is what Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji preached all his life. This is one of the principles of Sikhism. He said,

 

with the grace of the Lord, whatever you have received, share it with the needy and then consume.

 

  1. Kirat Karo: Means, make a living honestly. One should not exploit others to enjoy self-happiness. Earning without fraud and working diligently is what he preached.

 

  1. Naam Japo: Chant the name of 'True God'. Sri Guru Nanak Dev emphasised meditating on God's name to gain control over five evils- kama, krodh, lobh, moh, ahankar means lust, anger, greed, attachment and ego

 

  1. Sarbat daa bhalaa: Ask Lord for everyone's happiness.

 

Sri Guru Nanak dev emphasised the concept of universal brotherhood.

 

  1. Speak the truth without any fear: Sri Guru Nanak Dev said to always speak the truth without any fear. He said, getting victory by suppressing falsehood is temporary and standing firmly by truth is permanent. Sticking to the truth is also one of the 'hukums' (orders) of the Guru.
