The Colliding Spiral Galaxies of Arp 274

Two galaxies are squaring off in Virgo and here are the latest pictures. When two galaxies collide, the stars that compose them usually do not. This is because galaxies are mostly empty space and, however bright, stars only take up only a small fraction of that space. But during the collision, one galaxy can rip the other apart gravitationally, and dust and gas common to both galaxies does collide. If the two galaxies merge, black holes that likely resided in each galaxy center may eventually merge. Because the distances are so large, the whole thing takes place in slow motion – over hundreds of millions of years. Besides the two large spiral galaxies, a smaller third galaxy is visible on the far left of the featured image of Arp 274, also known as NGC 5679. Arp 274 spans about 200,000 light years across and lies about 400 million light years away toward the constellation of Virgo.

California woman dies after falling down storm drain in Orange County park: Firefighters found her in cardiac arrest as cops now launch probe into mysterious death

PUBLISHED: 09:39 EST, 23 January 2023 | UPDATED: 10:13 EST, 23 January 2023

  • Firefighters called to Haster Basin Park late Sunday evening found a woman outside the entrance of a storm drain in cardiac arrest

  • It is unknown how or why she entered the drain, nor why her heart stopped

  • Orange County authorities say they are investigating the mysterious death

An Orange County woman has died after being discovered in a park storm drain, as police continue to probe her mysterious death.

Firefighters in Garden Grove, California, responded to a report of a person in a storm drain needing medical aid late Sunday night.

Arriving at Haster Basin Park, firefighter-paramedics found the woman in cardiac arrest outside of the drain's opening. Although attempting to resuscitate her, the woman was later pronounced dead.

It is unknown why the dead woman was in the storm drain, nor why she suffered a cardiac arrest.

An image shared on Twitter by the Orange County Fire Department shows a team of firefighters working in darkness to extend a firetruck ladder over the storm drain.

Officials say technical rescue teams went into the storm drain to see if any others were down there, but did not find anyone.

Orange County police are currently investigating the mysterious death.

Storm-drain deaths tend to occur during heavy rains or flash floods, when people can be sucked into storm drains without grates protecting the opening.

In June of 2022, a Milwaukee boy and his father died after being sucked into a large drainage culvert during heavy rains.

An 11 year-old Arkansas boy suffered a similarly tragic end after being sucked into a storm drain while playing outside during a massive flood.

Orange County has not been experiencing flood conditions this weekend, and it is unknown whether the storm drain had a grate or not.
