Far below our feet, a giant may have started moving against us.

Earth’s inner core, a hot iron ball the size of Pluto, has stopped spinning in the same direction as the rest of the planet and might even be rotating the other way, research suggested on Monday.

Roughly 5,000 kilometres (3,100 miles) below the surface we live on, this “planet within the planet” can spin independently because it floats in the liquid metal outer core.

Exactly how the inner core rotates has been a matter of debate between scientists — and the latest research is expected to prove controversial.

What little we know about the inner core comes from measuring the tiny differences in seismic waves — created by earthquakes or sometimes nuclear explosions — as they pass through the middle of the Earth.

Seeking to track the inner core’s movements, new research published in the journal Nature Geoscience analysed seismic waves from repeating earthquakes over the last six decades.

The study’s authors, Xiaodong Song and Yi Yang of China’s Peking University, said they found that the inner core’s rotation “came to near halt around 2009 and then turned in an opposite direction”.

“We believe the inner core rotates, relative to the Earth’s surface, back and forth, like a swing,” they told AFP.

“One cycle of the swing is about seven decades”, meaning it changes direction roughly every 35 years, they added.

They said it previously changed direction in the early 1970s and predicted the next about-face would be in the mid-2040s.

The researchers said this rotation roughly lines up with changes in what is called the “length of day” — small variations in the exact time it takes Earth to rotate on its axis.

– Stuck in the middle –

So far there is little to indicate that what the inner core does has much effect on we surface dwellers.

But the researchers said they believed there are physical links between all Earth’s layers, from the inner core to the surface.

“We hope our study can motivate some researchers to build and test models which treat the whole Earth as an integrated dynamic system,” they said.

Experts not involved in the study expressed caution about its findings, pointing to several other theories and warning that many mysteries remain about the centre of the Earth.

“This is a very careful study by excellent scientists putting in a lot of data,” said John Vidale, a seismologist at the University of Southern California.

“(But) none of the models explain all the data very well in my opinion,” he added.

Vidale published research last year suggesting the inner core oscillates far more quickly, changing direction every six years or so. His work was based on seismic waves from two nuclear explosions in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

That timeframe is around the point when Monday’s research says the inner core last changed direction — which Vidale called “kind of a coincidence”.

– Geophysicists ‘divided’ –

Another theory — which Vidale said has some good evidence supporting it — is that the inner core only significantly moved between 2001 to 2013 and has stayed put since.

Hrvoje Tkalcic, a geophysicist at the Australian National University, has published research suggesting that the inner core’s cycle is every 20 to 30 years, rather than the 70 proposed in the latest study.

“These mathematical models are most likely all incorrect because they explain the observed data but are not required by the data,” Tkalcic said.

“Therefore, the geophysical community will be divided about this finding and the topic will remain controversial.”

He compared seismologists to doctors “who study the internal organs of patients’ bodies using imperfect or limited equipment”.

Lacking something like a CT scan, “our image of the inner Earth is still blurry”, he said, predicting more surprises ahead.

That could include more about a theory that the inner core might have yet another iron ball inside it — like a Russian doll.

“Something’s happening and I think we’re gonna figure it out,” Vidale said.

“But it may take a decade.”

Once upon a time, there was a kid that worked in his fathers store that sold idols for worship. The kid has an epiphany that this was all bullshit and he smashed the idols and proclaimed there is only one GOD. He pissed off a lot of people that day.

Fast forward a few generations and his children have multiplied and run some outpost in the desert. Like all big families, there are a few that run shit and don't pay their share of the bill at the resturant and the rest just go about their business…and cover the cost.

Then some kid comes along decides all these people are doing it wrong…not following the rules (kinda runs in the family if you think about it). This kid flips tables, whips people and then says, "Forgive …." This kid pissed off a lot of people that day.

It being one big happy family full of love, anger, hate, strife, kinda like any neighbor you might know, some people go off and start saying, "Yeah, the kid is right"

The muckety mucks who have been running things and living large are kinda pissed at the kid for upsetting the apple cart. So, the Muckety Mucks get the occupying Romans to execute the kid. Ironically, the Muckety Mucks pissed off a lot of people that day (again, runs in the family). Unfortunately, the regular folk trusted the Muckety Mucks too much and never really got an ide of how fucking annoying they are.

Anyway, more and more people start saying the kid was right….the Muckety Mucks don't follow the rules and that's wrong.

So, the Muckety Mucks determine real fast they need to quell this sh*t before it gets outta hand. The Muckety Mucks send a few Muck Heads to set up the followers of the kid, in such a way that the regular rule following folk would NEVER join their cousins and the Kid.

First, they pervert the Kids words and twist it so that the Kid sounds delusional as if HE is the only Child of God (when in fact we/they all are). Then they set up some idols of the Kid, Kid on cross etc. because remember the whole premise of this outpost clan is "no idols". And if that wasn't enough, the Muck Heads create this ritualistic worship thing where they get the followers to "eat the deceased Kids flesh" and "drink his blood"

WTF?

The cousins, who really only heard rumors about the Kid are apalled. They proclaim, "no way can I follow THAT…"

And so goes the story.

Democrats push to eliminate the debt ceiling, allow unlimited government borrowing

Democrats say it's 'dangerous' for Republicans to demand spending cuts as a condition of raising the borrowing limit

US reaches debt limit, triggers Treasury to take 'extraordinary measures'

Dozens of House Democrats have proposed legislation that would eliminate the debt ceiling, which would allow the government to borrow without any limit set by Congress.

The federal government hit the $31.381 trillion debt ceiling last week, and House Republicans are pushing for commitments to cut back on the record growth in federal spending before agreeing to allow more borrowing. But Democrats accuse Republicans of setting up the possibility of prohibiting a debt ceiling hike, which would make the government unable to fund all of its current obligations.

Democrats say a better idea is to eliminate all limits on federal borrowing and allow the government to borrow whatever it needs.

CONSERVATIVES SHARPEN THEIR SPEARS FOR HISTORIC DEBT CEILING FIGHT

"Weaponizing the debt ceiling and using it as a pawn in partisan budget negotiations is dangerous and repeatedly brings our nation to the brink of default, which would be disastrous to the U.S. economy – something we’ve witnessed as recently as 2011 when Republicans created a debt ceiling crisis that resulted in the first ever downgrade to the U.S. credit rating," said Rep. Bill Foster, D-Ill.

"The government has an obligation to pay its bills," he added. "Threatening to default on our debt is the same as ordering an expensive meal at a restaurant, eating it, and skipping out without paying. We can and should have a real conversation about overall spending, but the full faith and credit of the United States must never be compromised."

Foster’s bill is the End the Threat of Default Act, and it’s cosponsored by 42 House Democrats including Reps. Pramila Jayapal of Washington, Sheila Jackson Lee of Texas, Gerry Connolly of Virginia, Rashida Tlaib of Michigan and Barbara Lee of California.

TEXAS REP. ROY SAYS HE'LL USE DEBT CEILING VOTE TO EXTRACT SPENDING REFORMS: ‘IT’S MY JOB NOT TO BACK DOWN'

The Biden administration and its Democrat allies in Congress have argued that raising the debt ceiling does not allow "new" spending, and only allows the government to meet its current obligations. But Republicans say congressional approval of new spending programs is what has repeatedly forced the government to keep hitting its borrowing limit, which has then forced Congress to keep raising the debt ceiling.

Before the housing crisis in 2008, the total national debt was $9 trillion, an amount that more than tripled to more than $31 trillion in less than 15 years thanks to programs related to the housing bailout, 20 years of military presence in Afghanistan, COVID emergency response measures, and routine funding increases for defense and social programs.

COVID drove federal spending to record-high levels, and the government continues to spend near those levels even though the emergency has abated.

HOUSE CONSERVATIVE LEADER RIPS MEDIA FOR ‘IRRATIONAL’ DEBT CEILING COVERAGE, VOWS ‘SERIOUS FISCAL REFORM’

The federal government spent $4.4 trillion in fiscal year 2019, just before COVID hit. It spent $6.5 trillion in FY 2020, $6.8 trillion in FY 2021, and $6.3 trillion in FY 2022.

While President Biden last year said the pandemic is "over," the government is still on pace to spend more than $6 trillion in the current fiscal year.

While Biden is seeking a blank check, Republicans this week noted that in 2011, Vice President Joe Biden championed the idea of bipartisan negotiations on the debt ceiling. Biden was quoted in a 2011 Washington Post story saying that "everyone wants an agreement" on the debt ceiling that "bends the curve on long-term debt."

The Treasury Department said last week that now that the debt ceiling has been reached, it will temporarily halt funding for federal worker retirement plans in order to avoid new borrowing, and has said an increase in the debt ceiling will be needed by the summer.
