Snipers target priests first – Patriarch

Five Russian Orthodox military chaplains have been killed during the conflict in Ukraine, he reminded lawmakers

Orthodox chaplains in the military, the 'capellans' who give guidance and inspiration to troops on the battlefield, risk their lives as much as members of their flock do, or even more, the head of the Russian Orthodox Church has stated.

“A priest is the most valuable target for the enemy. Snipers aim at [them] first,” Patriarch Kirill said on Thursday during a speech in the Russian parliament.

Kirill was explaining that while Orthodox priests are banned by their faith from serving in the military or even from taking up arms, the role of military capellans is as important and requires as much courage as that of a soldier.

“Priests don’t hide behind, with the wagon trains. They are with the warriors, their flock, often at the most forward parts of the frontline,” he said.

Five priests have been killed during the military operation in Ukraine, the patriarch reminded his audience. One of them has been posthumously awarded Russia’s highest merit, the Hero of Russia.

He was referring to veteran capellan Mikhail Vasilyev, who was killed by a rocket strike in November. The 51-year-old cleric had accompanied Russian troops during missions in Kosovo, Bosnia, Abkhazia, Kyrgyzstan and Syria, among other places.

The patriarch urged lawmakers to put into law a social safety net for capellans, which would put them on par with military service members. Kirill was speaking during a session, which was part of the “Christmas educational readings”, an annual event organized by the Russian Orthodox Church.

In his address Kirill described the conflict inUkraine as “fratricidal” and instigated by powerful foreign forces, which seek to antagonize the peoples of Ukraine and Russia. Those forces are also behind Kiev’s crackdown against the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, which would be essential for any future reconciliation, he assessed.

No joy over tank supplies to Ukraine – German defense minister

Few issues have caused such division in the country in recent decades, Boris Pistorius has admitted

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius has said he can’t understand those who are celebrating Berlin’s decision to send modern Leopard 2 tanks to Kiev. Nothing is joyful about “war,” he told journalists on Thursday.

Few issues have caused such differences of opinion within German society, the minister admitted, adding that this “shows how difficult… such a decision is.” Pistorius said he “totally sympathizes” with those who are concerned about “delivering tanks to a war zone.”

“I have little sympathy for those who would gladly shout ‘Hallelujah’ over [the fact] that there are tank deliveries,” the minister said, adding that “there is no reason for that.” “We are talking about a war and nothing about it is pleasant.”

His comments came as he announced that the tanks Berlin pledged to Kiev earlier this week would most likely arrive in Ukraine in late March or early April. Berlin vowed to provide a company-sized tank force from Bundeswehr stocks, comprising 14 Leopard 2A6 tanks – one of the latest versions of the combat vehicle. Germany also said it would allow other nations with German-made heavy equipment in stock to send them to Ukraine as well.

Speaking to journalists on Thursday during a visit to a military base in Saxony-Anhalt, Pistorius also brushed off criticism that Berlin had waited too long to send tanks to Kiev.

“We did not hesitate. We negotiated. We talked to our allies, we talked to our partners and friends about what is the best thing to do now,” he said, describing it as a “matter of war” and a “matter of trust.”

“I think that everybody should be satisfied with this decision because we do what is necessary,” Pistorius said, adding that he believes the tanks would get to Ukraine “early enough.”

On Wednesday, the US also announced plans to send 31 of its M1 Abrams tanks to Ukraine. Russia responded to the development by saying that tank deliveries by Western nations suggested that NATO’s “direct involvement” in the conflict in Ukraine was “growing.” Moscow has repeatedly warned that the West’s continued arms supplies to Kiev risk a direct confrontation between NATO and Russia

NATO's best tanks are going to Ukraine, what will it mean on the battlefield?

Kiev will get what it demanded from the West, but will it be enough?

Tank supplies to Ukraine from NATO members is the top news story this week. Kiev has been calling for these weapons from its western sponsors since the beginning of the Russian offensive, and it looks like now, eleven months into the fighting, these demands are being met.

..The US has announced it will send 31 Abrams main battle tanks. In a hastily scheduled speech on Wednesday, President Joe Biden noted that they are complicated to operate and maintain, so the US will provide Kiev with “parts and equipment necessary to effectively sustain these tanks on the battlefield.”….

How many tanks does Kiev need?

To simplify calculations, we’ll be using an armored division, the main structural and tactical unit of armored forces in the former Soviet republics, as our yardstick. According to Soviet manuals, an armored division must have 296 tanks, 230 infantry fighting vehicles, 54 self-propelled artillery systems, over 2,000 regular vehicles, and almost 12,000 soldiers and officers.

How many divisions does Kiev need? At least one per each of the three main fronts — in Lugansk, Donetsk, and Zaporozhye. The line of contact in the special military operation zone right now is 815 km long, making three divisions too modest an amount to make a difference, but let’s disregard this for the time being.

Three armored divisions combined would have a total of about 900 tanks. Apart from that, another armored division may be necessary on the Belarusian front, which could see some very heavy fighting. In case of an escalation there, an armored division or a similar unit in reserve is a must, which drives the number of required tanks up by 300 to 1,200.

Finally, no commander-in-chief can do without his own reserve, the so-called reserve of the supreme high command. Without at least one armored division, this reserve cannot really count as such, which means another 300 tanks for a required total of 1,500.

Another thing to consider is probable Ukrainian losses during offensive operations. The average daily losses of an armored unit in this case stand at 10 to 15%. About 15 to 20% of incapacitated tanks are typically irrecoverable losses, while the rest require repairs (general maintenance for 30 to 50%, medium-level repairs for 15 to 30%, and an overhaul for 10 to 20%).

Simply put, at least another 300 tanks are required to offset losses during combat operations. This gives us a figure of 1,800 tanks, which must be considered an absolute minimum.

These are very approximate and somewhat simplistic calculations, yet they give us ballpark figures….

How many tanks will Kiev get?

So far, NATO countries have earmarked tanks for Ukraine numbered in the dozens. This is only a fraction of the hypothetical minimum.

Great Britain and Poland have officially pledged an armored company each, respectively consisting of up to 14 tanks. Germany will supply a similar amount, while the US is preparing the supply of 31 Abrams heavy weapons.

(Really long and good opinion piece)

UN report labels China ‘a bright spot’

The economic forecast for Beijing is moderate, but better than the “sharply deteriorated” outlook for the EU

China will outpace Western economies this year, having abandoned its zero-Covid rules and eased monetary and fiscal policy, the United Nations’ report has predicted.

Growth in the world’s second-largest economy is projected to “moderately” improve in 2023 after a weaker-than-expected performance last year, hampered by severe lockdowns.

Beijing’s GDP growth is projected to pick up from 3% last year to 4.8%, The World Economic Situation and Prospects report published on Wednesday said. The UN expects the reopening of the Chinese economy to be “bumpy” as it is likely to “remain below the pre-crisis” rate of 6% to 6.5%.

Meanwhile, the outlook for the EU in 2023 has “sharply deteriorated” as the energy and cost-of-living crises push member states into a “mild” recession during winter. Gross domestic product in the EU will grow by a mere 0.2%, sharply down from 3.3% in 2022, the report said.

The US economy is projected to expand by only 0.4% in 2023, compared to estimated growth of 1.8% in 2022.

Overall global economic growth will decline from 3% in 2022 to 1.9% in 2023, marking one of the lowest rates in recent decades.

“The near-term economic outlook remains highly uncertain, however, as myriad economic, financial, geopolitical and environmental risks persist,” the report said, adding that global growth will “moderately” recover to 2.7% in 2024 if “macroeconomic headwinds begin to subside next year.”

Earlier, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres warned that a “severe slowdown” of the global economy looms large amid high inflation, aggressive monetary tightening and “heightened uncertainties”. He added that many economies “are at risk of falling into recession, having barely recovered from the shock of the pandemic.”

Retired Col. Douglas MacGregor Discusses Status of Ukraine War and Background of Biden Sending Abram M-1 Tanks

January 26, 2023 | Sundance | 7 Comments

Col. Doug MacGregor appears with Judge Andrew Napolitano to explain the complexity of the tanks Biden has pledged to Ukraine. Additionally, MacGregor gives a different perspective than western media about the status of the war in Ukraine, the position and motive of the Russians and the overall status of the EU and NATO coalition.

MacGregor emphasizes that what the western public are told about the war is not consistent with the reality what is taking place on the ground in Ukraine. The term ‘hybrid warfare,’ which includes the U.S. State Dept. pushing a very specific propaganda message to the media, eventually runs into the reality of actual war fighting on the ground that is far more conventional.

The U.S. led NATO alliance may be winning the narrative, as outlined by media; however, the Russians are winning the actual fighting on the ground in Ukraine. In addition to noting the Russian cultural aspects of the conflict, Col MacGregor gives some somber analysis about how dangerous this is becoming as the U.S. political voices are not willing to concede or admit anything that runs counter to their promoted narrative.
