Shadow people is us seeing the beings that are really there but on another plane of existence. Peripheral vision is the key here, it's a whole new ball game compared to the normal vision.
As for "options", well, it's a (really) big universe out there so don't limit yourself to that, but as you know Light overcomes darkness so you can guess what forces make up the majority there.
