Several injuries reported after incident at Nuclear Fuel Services in Erwin

ERWIN, Tenn. (WCYB) — An incident at Nuclear Fuel Services in Erwin injured several workers Monday morning.

According to a spokesperson, an unexpected chemical reaction resulted in the release of fumes in a contained area of the facility at around 10:30 a.m.

The spokesperson said five employees were affected. Two were taken to a hospital, and the other three were checked by on-site medical teams.

Officials said the incident did not pose any environmental threat.

NFS Experiences Condition Upset

On January, 30 2023 at 10:30 a.m., Nuclear Fuel Services, Inc. experienced a condition upset during routine inventory activities. Local ambulance services were contacted as a precautionary measure to ensure proper response to employees affected by the upset.

Two employees were transported for further evaluation, while three were evaluated onsite and released.

No impact to the facilities, the public, or the environment occurred.
