Tom Girardi, the once-vaunted Los Angeles trial attorney, was indicted by federal grand juries in two states on fraud charges amid allegations of swindling millions of dollars from injured and wounded clients, prosecutors announced Wednesday.
In Chicago, Girardi and his son-in-law, attorney David Lira, and the former chief financial officer of Girardi’s law firm, Christopher Kamon, were charged with eight counts of wire fraud and four counts of contempt of court. Prosecutors said they misappropriated more than $3 million in settlement funds from the relatives of those who died in an Indonesian plane crash.
In Los Angeles, Girardi was charged with wire fraud following accusations of embezzling more than $15 million from clients and using the funds to cover his law firm’s payroll and pay his personal expenses, including a hefty American Express bill and fees at two country clubs. The L.A. case also includes charges against Kamon, the former CFO, and indicates that he and his boss “devised, participated in, and executed a scheme to defraud victim clients” from 2010 until the firm, Girardi Keese, collapsed in late 2020.

Tom Girardi rubbed elbows with country's most powerful Democrats
A high-profile former lawyer who donated big money to Democrats and hosted a fundraiser for President Bidenwas indicted by federal grand juries on Wednesday in two states for allegedly embezzling more than $18 million from legal clients.
The Justice Department announced that Tom Girardi, 83, was charged in Los Angeles with five counts of wire fraud, which carries a maximum 20-year federal prison sentence. According to prosecutors, the charges were part of an indictment accusing him of embezzling more than $15 million from clients and using the funds to cover his law firm's payroll and pay his personal expenses.
The case also includes charges against Christopher Kamon, the former chief financial officer of Girardi's LA-based law firm, Girardi Keese, indicating they "devised, participated in, and executed a scheme to defraud victim clients" until the firm collapsed in late 2020.
n Chicago, meanwhile, Girardi, his son-in-law David Lira, and Kamon were charged with eight counts of wire fraud and four counts of contempt of court. Prosecutors allege the trio stole more than $3 million in settlement funds meant for family members of those who died in a Boeing plane crash off the coast of Indonesia.
Wednesday's indictments mark the latest chapter in the remarkable downfall of Girardi, who was one of the most prominent attorneys in LA before being disbarred in disgrace in California last year.
Before his downfall, Girardi cultivated close ties with a plethora of powerful Democratic politicians at all levels of government — mayors, governors, members of Congress, presidents, and presidential candidates — through large donations and lavish spending on fundraisers.
In addition to Biden, Girardi has given tens of thousands of dollars each to the likes of Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, Sen. Dianne Feinstein, and a host of other elected officials at the local, state, and federal levels.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom received a total of $87,600 from Girardi for his 2018 gubernatorial campaign and a total of $8,500 for his 2014 lieutenant governor campaign, campaign finance records show.
Over the last decade, Girardi and his estranged wife, "Real Housewives of Beverly Hills" reality TV star Erika Jayne, gave more than $2 million to the national Democratic Party and individual candidates, according to election filings. And that was despite Girardi reportedly defaulting on high-interest loans and being forced to liquidate his stock portfolio.
Girardi's deep pockets and status as both a celebrity and high-powered attorney reportedly gave him easy and intimate access to Democrats both on Capitol Hill and in the California governor's mansion.

Boeing's last commercial 747 is set to be delivered today, more than 50 years after the iconic plane helped change air travel forever.
The last "Queen of the Skies," as they're sometimes called, is a freighter variant made for cargo operator Atlas Air.
Why it matters: The 747 — the world's first twin-aisle passenger jet — came to symbolize the era in which mass travel by air became not just possible, but commonplace.
Yet advances in airplane design and engine technology eventually led airlines to favor more efficient twin-engine designs, like Boeing's 777 and Airbus' A350.

Amid widespread speculation, a doctor is weighing in on the oft-mocked photos of King Charles III’s alleged swollen-red “sausage fingers” currently going viral on Twitter. The royal’s Jimmy Dean-esque digits have been ridiculed for years, but recently blew up after the monarch ascended the throne following the death of his mother Queen Elizabeth II.
“A reminder that these are King Charles III’s fingers,” read one of the many “Chuck roasts,” along with a picture of the royal’s hands looking crimson and bloated like Hellboy’s.
Another troll quipped, “Whoever can pull that ring off his finger will become the next king like Arthur with that sword in the stone.”
“I swear to god if I see Prince Charles fingers on this site one more time,” snarked another Twitter wit alongside a pic of bright red hot dogs. Interestingly, the king referred to himself as “sausage fingers” in a letter to a pal before Prince William was born.

Dr. Gareth Nye, senior lecturer at the University of Chester, has since weighed in on what King Charles’ vermillion mitts could mean for his health.
The doc explained that while “loads of conditions” could cause bloated fingers, some afflictions were more likely than others such as oedema or fluid retention.
“Oedema is a condition where the body starts to retain fluids in the limbs, normally the legs and ankles but also in the fingers, which causes them to swell,” Dr. Nye told the Daily Star. “Oedema is a common condition and mostly affects people over the age of 65 as the ability for fluid control is restricted.”
He added, “To see if this is the cause, pressing the swollen area for about 15 seconds would cause a depression in the area.”

Moments after Rittenhouse fatally shot Rosenbaum, 26-year-old Anthony Huber chased after the teen and hit him with a skateboard. Rittenhouse then fatally shot Huber once in the chest.
Rittenhouse testified that he acted in self-defense, while prosecutors say that Huber was trying to stop an "active shooter" when he approached the armed teen.
Huber was a Kenosha native who had six siblings. He was an avid skateboarder with a "quick wit and comedic personality," according to his obituary.
