'Southwest abort, FedEx is on the go!': Moment desperate cargo jet pilot landing at Austin airport tells passenger jet 75ft below it to abort take off because they're using the SAME runway

February 5, 2023

Newly-released audio details how a FedEx pilot, trying to land his cargo plane, urgently told a Southwest pilot to abort their imminent take off at Texas' Austin-Bergstrom International Airport.

Air Traffic Control audio revealed that the crew onboard a Southwest flight headed to Cancun, Mexico, were aware that the cargo plane was approaching the runway - but went ahead and took off anyway.

The plane had been given the OK to take off, but allegedly took too long. By the time it tried to begin its ascent, the Boeing 767 cargo plane was approaching its landing.

Quick-thinking pilots on the cargo plane were forced to swiftly make a go-around, narrowly missing the collision - which could have been fatal.

Moments before the nail-biting encounter, crew on boardthe cargo plane could be heard trying to get the Southwest flight to 'abort' its takeoff - which they refused to do - and it instead took off just 75 vertical feet from the oncoming cargo flight.

That's crazy close. "Refused"? WTF refused.. that was as close as it gets.

Who REFUSES to do the right thing in a situation like that? Pilot have a death wish or too much pressure to be "on time and under budget" and suspended critical thinking and all the pilot training ever had?

They better pull that license and ban him/her/it from flying forever. Never once heard of pilot behavior like this.

>Think of protocols when baking bc we use the same approach for handing off.

Flying is less scary than the thought of baking. Anon has looked it over a few times, it's a goal, a long long long term goal. Flying a basic small aircraft takes less knowledge than baking.

There will be paperwork. There will be a lot of interviews. If indeed the pilot refused due to the inability to abort then the airport will have at least one less air traffic controller, this is a tough one to come back from.

FrenAnon made it thru OKC (95% don't) and then on to the Olathe Naval Air Station and at that point they finally discovered fren was colorblind.

Were the standards for air traffic lowered because of "muh equity"?

So many questions.

Hundreds dead after powerful 7.8 quake knocks down buildings in Turkey, Syria

February 5, 2023

Over 300 people have been confirmed dead after a massive 7.8-magnitude earthquake rocked southeast Turkey and Syria early Monday, leveling several buildings as people slept in their beds.

Local officials reported at least 76 fatalities in Turkey and another 284 in Syria, including in rebel-held areas. The devastating toll was expected to rise as rescuers frantically search for survivors trapped under the rubble.

Thousands of more people in both countries were injured, officials said.

The earthquake’s center struck an area about 20 miles from Gaziantep, a major city and provincial capital 60 miles from the Syrian border, according to the US Geological Survey. It was centered 11 miles deep and was followed by a strong 6.7-magnitude aftershock about 10 minutes later.

At least 11 people were killed in the Syrian town of Atmed, with many more deaths expected, a doctor on the ground told The Associated Press.

“We fear that the deaths are in the hundreds,” R. Muheeb Qaddour said, referring to the rebel-held northwest. “We are under extreme pressure.”

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that authorities immediately dispatched search and rescue teams to the areas struck by the quake and its six aftershocks.

“We hope that we will get through this disaster together as soon as possible and with the least damage,” he said on Twitter.

Officials urged residents to stay away from the damaged buildings — some of which were reduced piles of concrete rubble and mangled metal.

White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan said in a Monday morning statement that the US is “profoundly concerned by the reports of today’s destructive earthquake” and “ready to provide any and all needed assistance” to Turkey and Syria.

“President Biden has directedUSAIDand other federal government partners to assess U.S. response options to help those most affected. We will continue to closely monitor the situation in coordination with the Government of Turkiye,” said Sullivan.
