Societe Generale Gets Pulled Into SEC’s Widening Messaging Probe

Societe Generale SA has been drawn into the industry-wide investigation by the US Securities and Exchange Commission whether banks’ staff have made use of unauthorized communication channels.

The French lender’s US unit received an information request from the SEC “focused on compliance with record-keeping requirements in connection with business-related communications on messaging platforms that were not approved by the firm,” it said Wednesday. “The inquiry follows a number of regulatory settlements in 2022 with other firms covering similar matters,” Societe Generale said, adding it’s “cooperating with the investigation.”

US regulators have already announced more than $2 billion in total penalties in the matter, and have expanded their probe to include hedge funds and asset management firms. They’re worried that the rapid spread of messaging services such as WhatsApp undermines a requirement for finance firms to archive business-related communications, opening the door for misconduct to go unnoticed.

Moar fines will be paid and nuffin will come of this in the form of settlements

As a reminder it was Soc. Gen that panicked in January of 2008 and began dumping what they claimed were unauthorized over-leveraged equity trades (done by one person) which caused the Federal Reserve to panic and cut rates by 75bp

They have some real problem with those KC-46 Pegasus tankers-they got rid of the bubble where the dedicated refueling boom operator sits on the KC-135s and DC-10s monitoring the hook-ups and instead replaced it with a video system (and not even in color) so it is overly complicated for no reason.

Sometimes catch them on refueling Ops over the midwest and always with an older model KC-135

Moving Fed policy rate to 5.00%-5.25% this year seems reasonable, Williams says

New York Federal Reserve President John Williams said on Wednesday the U.S. central bank still has more interest rate rises ahead of it and will need to keep monetary policy restrictive for some time to come.

Moving to a federal funds rate of between 5.00% and 5.25% "seems a very reasonable view of what we'll need to do this year in order to get the supply and demand imbalances down," Williams said at a Wall Street Journal event. Williams' comments were his first since the Fed's decision last week to moderate the pace of its rate rise campaign. Last Wednesday, the rate-setting Federal Open Market Committee boosted its overnight target rate by a quarter of a percentage point to the 4.50%-4.75% range as it continued its effort to lower high levels of inflation. The Fed's rate hike was followed just days later by surprisingly strong jobs data that suggested the central bank may have to raise rates even more as it seeks to better balance strong demand with available supply in the economy. (as mentioned an entire year's worth of seasonal adjustments are done in January's BLS #s so they will not show this same type of increase of "great results" for Feb's report-released in early March-this will be the all clear to do one moar mebby 2 of 25 bp and that is all-they need to get this over with and declare 'victory' prior to the election season moving into another gear later this year-and the NYFRB is the real FED as the Washington branch is the window dressing-all the 3 letter programs and Reverse Repos, QE/QT, Dollar swaps, Securities lending.BS buying etc. emanate from the NYFRB not the Wash branch) Speaking on Tuesday, Fed Chair Jerome Powell said "if we continue to get, for example, strong labor market reports or higher, higher inflation reports, it may well be the case we have to do more" with rate rises over time.

On Wednesday, Williams said it is key for monetary policy to get to and stay at levels that will restrain growth for a few years. He added that his expectations of future Fed rate cuts are driven mostly by a need to respond to the likelihood of lower levels of inflation in the future. Williams said the prospect of a lower federal funds rate next year is driven mostly by monetary policy adjusting to a weaker inflation environment.
