FCC Commissioner Says US Government Can Provide Internet Access to Cuba

Defunct high-altitude balloon project could give Cubans ability to share protest videos and photos

Florida Republicans have led the push for internet access in Cuba, with Governor Ron DeSantis calling on President Biden to provide funding and federal resources. "What does the regime do when you start to see these images?" DeSantis said. "They shut down the internet, they don't want the truth to be out, they don't want people to be able to communicate." Senator Marco Rubio, who is Cuban-American, called on "innovative American companies" to provide internet access.

In a press conference Thursday, Biden said his administration would look into ways to deliver internet to the island. "They've cut off access to the internet. We're considering whether we have the technology to reinstate that access," Biden said.

The White House got a jab in on Florida Gov. Ron Desantis Thursday during a press gaggle aboard Air Force One en route to the Sunshine State. White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre was asked by reporters for comment on the DeSantis administration's ongoing feud with the Walt Disney Company. Jean-Pierre chuckled during her response, saying, "I don't know about you all, but I certainly would not get into a fight with Mickey Mouse. I don't think that would be the thing I would be doing." She also referenced the Republicans' rebuttal to Biden's State of the Union address in which Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders stated

A Republican councilman in Milford, New Jersey, was fatally shot Wednesday, a week after another councilperson was killed. Fifty-one-year-old PSE&G worker Russell D. Heller was allegedly killed by an ex-employee in Somerset, Patch.com reported Thursday.(Tweet/Photos) Authorities are still investigating the case, but said the shooting was not politically connected to Heller’s elected office or political affiliations. Rich, the Director of Hunterdon County Board of Commissioners, said in a statement that Heller would be deeply missed, adding he “was a loving and caring father to his daughter and a dedicated and loyal friend to all of those who had the pleasure of knowing him.”
