They knew very well the woes of a "theocratic" monarchy as their predecessors had escaped from one their selves, and they were fighting against one trying to emerge as a prominent figure in the new Republic. Conservatives crack me the fuck up because they rail against secular ruling authority while dismissing the fact that the purpose of ensuring it remained as such was to give them freedom from oppression, and the right to choose how to believe. The other choice was to pick an absolute authority in a particular religion and denomination; invalidating all other view points and enslaving the minds of everyone regardless of their personal beliefs.
