Navy suspends work at 4 dry docks over earthquake concerns
The Navy says the facilities are not in any immediate risk, but 100 experts will evaluate the dry docks for necessary mitigation measures moving forward.
The US Navy said today it is suspending submarine repair work at four dry docks in Washington state due to concerns about the facilities’ ability to withstand seismic activities.
The suspension of work applies to dry docks four, five and six at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, Wash., and one at the Trident Refit Facility Bangor.
While officials say there is “no immediate risk” to the facilities, the Navy will have a team of more than 100 experts evaluate the dry docks for what measures are required long-term to keep its personnel and equipment safe, Defense News reported.
Driving the concerns are the results of a recent planned “seismic study,” which was done as part of the service’s long-term plan to revamp the four public shipyards, that “identified potential issues associated with the remote possibility of a large-scale earthquake occurring simultaneously with a submarine maintenance availability,” according to the statement.
“With this new information, the Navy is taking additional measures to further ensure the safety of the shipyard workforce, sailors, the local public, the environment, and the submarines,” the statement continues.
Officials said that the pause will not result in any reduction of the 14,000 personnel working in the yards, USNI News reported.
While the dry docks may not be in imminent danger, it’s also unclear how long they’ll be out of commission. And the shutdown comes at a time when the Navy has been working to reduce its submarine maintenance backlog. It’s an issue Capitol Hill as well as independent government auditors have repeatedly criticized Navy brass for failing to overcome. In turn, Navy leadership have also lashed out at industry for not stepping up to the plate when called upon.
Rear Adm. Jonathan Rucker, the program executive officer for attack submarines, said on average that 30 percent of the maintenance work done on any given Navy submarine is unplanned work.

The Foreign Ministry summoned the envoys of nine countries, including ones that have closed their diplomatic missions in Türkiye, diplomatic sources said Thursday.
Sources noted that the ambassadors and representatives of the U.S., the Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland, Britain, Germany, Belgium, France and Italy were summoned to the ministry in Ankara to convey Türkiye's reaction.

Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland's daughter is a high-ranking member of an environmental group that stormed the Interior Department in Washington, D.C. and clashed with police.
The Pueblo Action Alliance, a radical environmental group, lists Somah Haaland, 28, as its media organizer, according to the Daily Mail. The group gained notoriety during a mid-October 2021 incident in which protesters pushed past police to enter the building and take over the space belonging to the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
The group sought the bureau's abolition, the restoration of indigenous land, and a restructuring of Washington's arrangements with native tribes, according to Newsweek. The Mail noted that the protest had been dubbed "reminiscent of January 6."
Multiple protesters were arrested in the aftermath of the episode and at least one police officer was hospitalized.
Deb Haaland held her post at the time, but was not present in the building. Her daughter has sought to distance herself from the interior secretary, posting on Instagram at the time of the intrusion that "I have my own life and I am politically involved my own way that is separate from my mother. I have no influence or control over anything that she does," per the Mail.

Ad Network Owned by Microsoft Is Using Foreign Disinformation ‘Experts’ to Blacklist Conservative Media Companies
The Global Disinformation Index (GDI), a foreign think tank headquartered in the United Kingdom, released an assessment of American online media designed to blacklist conservative media outlets and choke off their advertising revenue. The information is kept on what GDI calls its “Dynamic Exclusion List.”
Ad networks — including most prominently Xandr — which is owned by Microsoft — are now using this list to refuse to allow advertising on conservative media websites.
Microsoft has yet to respond to a request for comment regarding Xandr’s use of the Dynamic Exclusion List, which is censoring conservative outlets.
GDI in December released its report that detailed the alleged “disinformation risk” for the American online media market in partnership with the Global Disinformation Lab (GDIL), a think tank at the University of Texas at Austin that generates policy recommendations and solutions to combat disinformation.
The GDI report on the American online media landscape reviewed 69 news outlets, and listed ten outlets it found are the most at risk of spreading disinformation, and ten outlets that are the least likely to spread disinformation. GDI rated conservative sites as having the highest risk for spreading disinformation and liberal websites as the most trusted.
