Attempts by the US State Department to label Seymour Hersh’s article about the sabotage of Nord Stream pipelines “nonsense” are “overt lies” that display “shocking ignorance of American history”, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told reporters on Friday.

Veteran investigative journalist Hersh reported on Wednesday that the US was behind the destruction of the Baltic Sea pipelines on September 26,2022. American divers planted charges under the cover of a NATO exercise, and a Norwegian airplane detonated them remotely when the time came, Hersh claimed.

State Department spokesman Ned Price called Seymour Hersh’s Nord Stream revelations “nonsense” on Thursday.

When asked by a reporter whether he viewed the US government’s denial of involvement in the attack as credible, Price replied: “I absolutely do, and I repeat it here.”

Answering a question on whether the US State Department contacted ambassadors from Germany, Norway and other allies after the article was published, Price said: “It would not be typical for us to engage allies and partners on something that is utter and complete nonsense and that should be rejected out of hand by anyone who is looking at it through an objective lens.”

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said she was astonished by Price calling what US President Joe Biden and Deputy Secretary of State Victoria Nuland had openly described as their preferred outcome, “nonsense”.

On Sept. 30, 2022, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken called the Nord Stream attack “a tremendous opportunity to once and for all remove the dependence on Russian energy and thus to take away from Vladimir Putin the weaponization of energy as a means of advancing his imperial designs.”

“The US is once again lying live on air, openly mocking journalists who asked fully justified questions,” Zakharova said.

Washington has a history of targeting civilian chemical infrastructure, Zakharova said, citing the 1983 CIA sabotage of a pipeline in Nicaragua as an example.

“You did this, you do this, and you will do this until you’re stopped,” Zakharova said.

“Twenty years ago, Secretary of State Colin Powell brought to the UN Security Council a vial of something, and called [on] allies and partners to invade a sovereign state, without any evidence, over claims that proved to be utter nonsense. Ned, do you know your own department’s history?” Zakharova said. “I have no doubts that at the State Department they are bad with the history of their own country. That’s why we are where we are.”

Zakharova called for „an international investigation into the facts … so that the public receives reliable information about the motives, executors & organisers of those subversive acts.“

On Friday, the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said Washington owes the world an explanation: “We have noted the reports,” Mao Ning said. “If Hersh is telling the truth, what he revealed is clearly unacceptable and must be answered for. The US owes the world a responsible explanation.”

Mao criticzed media attempts to memory-hole the explosive story: “It only proves that some media outlets care little about the truth. They pretend not to see the truth that really matters and, more often than not, try to sell false narratives rather than the truth.”

Millions Of Americans Face "Hunger Cliff" As 32 States Set To Slash Emergency Food Stamp Benefits

More than 30 million Americans face a "hunger cliff," as 32 states are set to slash food-stamp benefits beginning in March. By number, California and Texas have the most people on food stamps, at 5.1 million and 3.6 million respectively.

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) program notably exploded from $60.3 billion in 2019 to $119.5 billion in 2022 thanks to the Agriculture Department expanding food-stamp benefits by evading the normal process for determining eligibility and end-running Congressional review.

The reductions are due to the end of so-called emergency allotments, which bolstered food-stamp benefits at the start of the pandemic as Americans grappled with the massive disruption to the economy. While the U.S. is certainly on more stable footing than in 2020, households are now struggling with high food costs — groceries were about 10% higher in December than a year earlier — making the timing of the SNAP cuts particularly challenging, experts say. -CBS News

Biden Appointee Who Pushes the Unconstitutional Military Vaccine Mandate to Resign

The former senior defense official behind the unconstitutional military vaccine mandate will step down from her current position as executive director of the electronic health records modernization program inside the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), according to FedScoop.

Dr. Terry Adirim will step down on February 25 to “pursue other opportunities” outside the department, according to an internal memo sent by VA Deputy Secretary Donald Remy to employees.

According to the internal memo, the position will be filled by Dr. Neil Evans, who is currently a senior consultant for the Office of Information and Technology, until a candidate is identified.

Adirim has served as the VA electronic health record modernization program director since December 2021.

Investigative reporter Jordan Schachtel of The Dossier reported that Adirim signed an order requiring all service members to receive the emergency use authorization (EUA) COVID vaccine while serving as acting Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs after being appointed by Joe Biden.

“While she was in the Pentagon as the acting assistant secretary of defense for health affairs (serving as a Biden Admin political appointee), Dr Adirim, signed her name to an order forcing service members to take the emergency use authorization (EUA) vaccine. Adirim’s memo attempted to justify mandating EUA shots as if they were FDA approved, which was not the case at the time, and remains the same today. 7 Biden Admin Officials Were In Office Unlawfully, Government Watchdog Finds

Seven different officials in President Joe Biden’s administration are in office illegally due to time limits, according to the Government Accountability Office (GAO).

On Wednesday, the GAO found that seven presidential appointees serving in “acting” positions in their respective offices have run out of time on how long they can serve without a full Senate confirmation. GAO has issued five separate reports on the issue.

There are numerous positions within the executive branch that the president must appoint, and the U.S. Senate must confirm. These roles are referred to as PAS positions. Oftentimes, presidents will select individuals to temporarily fill these PAS positions while seeking Senate confirmations to fill out the roles on a more long-term basis.

The Federal Vacancies Reform Act of 1998 regulates when and how a president can choose “acting” officers to temporarily fill these PAS positions. The law generally stipulates that appointees may only serve in an acting position for about 210 days, starting from the date the vacancy occurs.

The law states that if the Senate rejects a first nomination to permanently fill a PAS position or if the president withdraws the nomination, an “acting” officer may fill the position for up to 210 more days.

The president may submit a second nominee to the Senate, and if the nomination is rejected, an acting officer may fill the position for another 210 days. Outside of these time limits, if no individual is confirmed, the PAS position must remain vacant, and only the head of the agency may perform the functions or duties of the position.

The GAO found that seven officials have exceeded the time limits stipulated in the law:

Allison Randall—Acting Director of the Department of Justice (DOJ) Office on Violence Against Women;

Charlotte A. Dye—Acting General Counsel of the Federal Labor Relations Authority (FLRA);

Tae D. Johnson—Acting Director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE);

Deidre Harrison—Acting Controller of the Office of Federal Financial Management, the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB);

Karen Freeman, Craig Hart, and Ann Marie Yastishock—Assistant Administrators of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Bureau for Asia.

Shirley A. Jones, the Managing Associate General Counsel for the GAO, said each of the alleged violations “began in 2021 or 2022 and involves a long-vacant position for which previous Presidents submitted nominations.”

Greenwald on Nord Stream: “You Have to Spread Lies on Behalf of the CIA to Get Ahead in Journalism”

Speaking on his YouTube show, Glenn Greenwald went off on reporters seeking to discredit fellow investigative reporter Seymour Hersh. “What you can’t do, what Hersh did, is you spread ‘conspiracy theories’ that are against the narrative of the US security state, that undermine US foreign policy. That’s the only thing that’s prohibited” Greenwald said.

Seymour Hersh has “long been hated in Washington circles … for his refusal to play ball” which “used to be the hallmark” of good reporting, but not in the “era of corporatized media”, Greenwald said.

Hersh is being attacked for reporting “what most rational people already believe: That it was not Russia which blew up its own Nord Stream pipeline,” but “instead it was the US.” Greenwald called Seymour Hersh, “the most illustrious journalist of his generation.”

“Who is ‘Business Insider’ and Mia Jankowicz to talk about Sy Hersh in this way? Who discredited Sy Hersh?”, Greenwald said. “Not a single person at this site has ever broken a story, yet they talk about him as if he’s some sort of unmentionable.”

“It’s proving a gift to Putin? Who cares? The only question a real journalist asks is, ‘is the story true?’ and if it’s true you publish it, without regard to who it helps or hurts. This obsession with Is something ‘a gift to Trump’ or a gift to Putin – this is not something a real journalist thinks or cares about. The only thing you care about is ‘Is it true?’”

“These people are propagandists. That’s how they think,” Greenwald said.

Business Insider claimed Hersh’s reporting was “poorly-sourced, conspiratorial, and over-reliant on anonymous sources.” Democrats sought to impeach President Trump over fake charges by an “anonymous whistleblower” who turned out to be a Biden veteran working with Rep Adam Schiff.

Business Insider cited shady propaganda outlet Bellingcat, which “was deeply critical of (Hersh’s) reporting on chemical attacks in Syria.”

Glenn Greenwald called Bellingcat, “essentially a US-government funded outlet,” which “receives funding from the NED, which was created by the CIA and the State Department to interfere in other countries and destabilize governments like Syria.”

“It also gets funding from the EU,” Greenwald said. According to the EU Financial Transparency Portal, Bellingcat received €320.000 from the EU in 2021.

“We get a lot of our money from donors like the Open Society Foundation,” Bellingcat founder Eliot Higgins told the Guardian 2018.

“Of course Bellingcat doesn’t like Seymour Hersh because his reporting undermines the narrative of the U.S. security state and western media outlets,” Greenwald said.

“And the giants of journalism at Vox”, Greenwald said, “raised doubts about (Hersh’s) infamous 2015 claim that President Barack Obama did not, in fact, mastermind the killing of Osama bin Laden”, according to Business Insider.

“Many of the claims about the killing of Osama bin Laden were lies, (including) how bin Laden picked up his wives and used them as shields, that it was bin Laden and his crew who started shooting – most of those claims ended up changing,” Greenwald said.

“But you cannot express skepticism of the claims of the US government or the US security state,” Greenwald said, “or this is what happens to you. They’ll start calling you ‘discredited’, a ‘conspiracy theorist’.”

“The people who have lied the most, who have spread the most conspiracy theories, are the ones who have been promoted and enriched most within corporate journalism,” Greenwald said. “That’s the only way to get ahead.” The difference is, “you have to spread lies and conspiracy theories on behalf of the CIA, and that advance the interests of the US government. That is not only permitted, that’s required to be promoted,” according to Greenwald.

“What you can’t do, what Hersh did, is you spread ‘conspiracy theories’ that are against the narrative of the US security state, that undermine US foreign policy. That’s the only thing that’s prohibited. That’s what gets you kicked out of journalism.”

Multiple Injured After Commercial Plane Collides With Bus at LAX Airport

At least five people were injured late on Friday after a passenger plane being towed on a taxiway collided with a shuttle bus at Los Angeles International Airport, commonly referred to as LAX, according to officials.

LAX stressed that there was no interruption to airport operations.

“A jet being towed tonight from a gate to a parking area made contact with a shuttle bus, resulting in injuries to about 5 people,” the airport said on Twitter.

LAX applauded their partners and the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) for their quick response and for treating everyone who sustained injuries.

The LAFD described the incident in a statement as a “low-speed collision.”

The agency said the collision happened shortly before 10 p.m. and resulted in four people being hospitalized, while one individual was treated at the scene and declined to be transported.

“The tug driver was transported in moderate condition,” the agency stated. “The bus driver and two passengers were transported in fair condition.”

One employee, who was also the only person aboard the plane at the time of the collision, was treated at the scene and refused hospitalization, according to the LAFD.

The shuttle bus’s windshield had extensive damage, KABC reported. The collision also left a large skid mark on the runway from the jet’s tire.

According to Simple Flying, a leading publication for aviation news, the commercial plane was an American Airlines Airbus A321 aircraft and was being tugged for maintenance.

Pictures and video footage of the incident appeared on social media shortly after the collision, showing a large presence of police, fire personnel, and medical professionals assessing the scene of the crash.

It wasn’t immediately clear what caused the crash and the damage to the aircraft is currently unknown.

Judicial Watch: Records Show U.S. and UK ‘Confidentiality Agreement’ Tied to Vaccine Adverse Events

Judicial Watch announced today it received 57 pages of heavily redacted records from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) that show, just two days prior to FDA approval of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine, a discussion between U.S. and UK health regulators regarding the COVID shot and “anaphylaxis,” with the regulators emphasizing their “mutual confidentiality agreement.”

All emails sent to and from members of the Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee regarding adverse events, deaths and/or injuries caused by investigatory vaccines for the prevention or treatment of SARS-CoV-2 and/or COVID-19 currently produced by Pfizer/BioNTech, Moderna and/or Johnson & Johnson.

The Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee (VRBPAC) is the U.S. Government’s central advisory body, along with Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), advising whether to approve COVID vaccines.

A lengthy, heavily redacted December 2020 email exchange shows U.S. and UK health officials placing a heavy emphasis on their “mutual confidentiality agreement” in a discussion regarding “anaphylactoid reactions” to the COVID vaccine.

The exchange is initiated by Jonathan Mogford, policy director of the UK’s Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency and is sent to Acting FDA Commissioner Janet Woodcock as well as Peter Marks, director of the Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research (CBER). The subject line and body of the email are fully redacted under FOIA Exemption B3 (relating to statutory prohibitions).

As background, Mogford includes information on “two cases of anaphylactoid reactions in individuals with a strong past history of allergic reactions….” Marks replies to Mogford: “It would be very helpful if our Office of Vaccines could receive additional details [redacted] from MHRA [UK Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency] under the terms of our mutual confidentiality agreement.” Mogford later replies, “… attached are [redacted] hope that’s helpful in the meantime. If I can just remind – information shared under our confidentiality agreement.”

Marion Gruber, head of the Office of Vaccines Research and Review (OVRR), then replies to Mogford, “Thank you so much for this information. Our emails crossed. If possible, would be available for a t-con [teleconference] today?” The exchange concludes with OVRR Deputy Director Phil Krause advising UK Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency official Jamie Convisser, “Your summary is correct. I’m cc:ing Amanda Cohn at CDC who can provide the most up-to-date details about [redacted]. Obviously, [redacted], not all of this is public so please hold these details confidential.” Cohn then replies to Mogford, and includes an attachment titled “Anaphylaxis CLARK Dec 19 2020 Final”. She writes, “I am adding my colleagues Tom Clark and Stacey Martin, we are happy to share more information with you. Attached are slides that were presented at a public meeting on Saturday. [Redacted].”

The FDA issued its Emergency Use Authorization for the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID vaccine for individuals 16 years of age and older on December 11, 2020.

On May 14, 2021, the CDC’s Dr. Amanda Cohn emailed Office of Vaccines Research and Review Director Marion Gruber and Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research Director Peter Marks with the subject line “Coadministration of COVID-19 Vaccines with Other Vaccines During Pregnancy.”

Gruber writes, “I am fine with this language.” Marks then responds to Cohn and her CDC colleague, Sarah Mbaeyi, “I can live with this too. Please let me know if you want to connect about the adverse event issue later today. Seems like work is still ongoing, but let me know. Thanks.” Cohn replies, “We have a meeting with Rochelle [presumably CDC Director Rochelle Walensky] at 3:30 about if we should say anything or wait until we have more definitive information. I will let you know where we land. I’m not sure there is a right answer.”

In complete U-turn, US issues temporary sanctions waiver to allow aid for Syria

US officials and western media have tried to portray sanctions as harmless, despite the impact they have had on humanitarian assistance for Syria

The US Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) on 10 February issued a temporary waiver for Caesar Act sanctions imposed on Syria to allow earthquake relief funds to reach the country, following days of hindered humanitarian efforts.

The Syria General License (GL) 23, issued by OFAC, authorizes earthquake relief transactions – which would typically be restricted under the Syrian Sanctions Regulations (SySR) – for a period of 180 days.

“Our deepest condolences go out to the people of Türkiye and Syria for the tragic loss of life and destruction in the wake of devastating earthquakes,” Deputy Secretary of the US Treasury Department, Wally Adeyemo, said.

“As international allies and humanitarian partners mobilize to help those affected, I want to make very clear that U.S. sanctions in Syria will not stand in the way of life-saving efforts for the Syrian people. While U.S. sanctions programs already contain robust exemptions for humanitarian efforts, today Treasury is issuing a blanket General License to authorize earthquake relief efforts so that those providing assistance can focus on what’s needed most: saving lives and rebuilding,” he added.

The decision followed a storm of criticism, as many have called out the impact of US sanctions on the humanitarian situation in the country, particularly on relief efforts following the devastating earthquake. Bassam Sabbagh, Syria’s permanent UN envoy, said on 8 February that international cargo planes have been ‘refusing’ to land in Syrian airports due to the threat of sanctions.

However, others have justified US sanctions and claimed that they do not restrict humanitarian efforts or aid provision in any way, despite repeated UN warnings over the years and in the last few days following the disaster.

However, many have pointed out that the sanctions are designed in a way that intimidates countries against dealing with the Syrian government, making it so that even when aid is involved, those who want to assist usually refrain from doing so due to the high risk of US consequences.

Senior US officials have said in the last two days that they will continue to refuse coordination with Damascus in any way, even going as far as calling it “counterproductive.”

Washington claims to be working ‘on the ground’ to provide aid through its NGO ‘partners,’ however, even US-based crowdfunding platform GoFundMe has canceled fundraising campaigns of local Syrians affected by the quake who are attempting to raise money for relief.

The fact that the US Treasury Department decided to officially issue a temporary waiver for the Caesar Act serves as proof that Washington’s sanctions indeed do pose a threat to humanitarian efforts.

An adviser to the acting head of the Donetsk People’s Republic, Yan Gagin, has said that some of Ukrainian soldiers taken prisoner lately are 16-17 years old.

"Some of the POWs are 16-17 years of age," Gagin said on Russia’s TV Channel One.

Gagin drew attention to the expansion of draft age in Ukraine. He said that not only young people were being called up for active military service. Conscription now applied to "very old men, previously unfit for active military service, and even women."

On February 25, 2022, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky signed a decree on general mobilization. The Verkhovna Rada has repeatedly prolonged it along with martial law. Last time the mobilization was extended until February 19, 2023. Top national-religious rabbi says deadly quake in Turkey, Syria is divine justice

Rabbi Shmuel Eliyahu, who is close to Itamar Ben Gvir and the father of a far-right minister, says disaster ‘cleanses the world, makes it better’; some rabbis aghast at comments

Chief Rabbi of Safed Shmuel Eliyahu, a prominent figure in Israel’s national-religious movement, said in a Friday column that a devastating earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria earlier this week, killing tens of thousands, was “divine justice.”

In the article published in Olam Katan, a popular conservative religious right-wing weekly newsletter, Eliyahu, who has close ties to National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir of the far-right Otzma Yehudit party, compared the earthquake to the drowning of the Egyptian forces in the Red Sea in the biblical story of Exodus.

“There is no doubt that those who would have seen the Egyptians drowning in the sea and who did not remember the whole event from beginning to end would have been filled with great pity for them and would have tried to save them from drowning,” Eliyahu wrote.

“But the Israelites sang songs because they knew the Egyptians, and understood that these drowners wanted to kill some of them and to continue to enslave the rest. They sang songs because they understood that there was divine justice here intended to punish the Egyptians, who had drowned the children of the people of Israel in the Nile, so that all the wicked in the world would see and be afraid,” he said.

Turning to the massive 7.8-magnitude earthquake, which has killed at least 25,000 people in Turkey and neighboring Syria, Eliyahu said: “God is judging all the nations around us who wanted to invade our land several times and throw us into the sea.”

Hunter Biden Asked Father's Top White House Aide To Help Serbian Businessman Campaign for UN Chief

First son's ties to former Serbian foreign minister Vuk Jeremic have caught the attention of the House Oversight Committee

Hunter Biden enlisted then-vice president Joe Biden's national security adviser to help with a Serbian business partner’s campaign to become secretary general of the United Nations, a scheme that is now drawing scrutiny from the House Oversight Committee as it attempts to piece together Hunter Biden's web of foreign business dealings.

Hunter Biden arranged a meeting in July 2016 for Vuk Jeremic and Colin Kahl, a Pentagon official who served as then-vice president Joe Biden’s national security adviser, emails from Hunter Biden’s abandoned laptop show. Jeremic, an energy executive and former Serbian foreign affairs minister, was at the time looking for American support in an upcoming vote for secretary general. Jeremic recounted that Kahl, who is now undersecretary of defense for policy and an amateur DJ, "promised" to find out more about the election.

While Jeremic’s bid for the top United Nations post was unsuccessful, his ties to Hunter Biden could shed light on the troubled presidential son’s foreign business dealings. Rep. James Comer (R., Ky.) inquired about the link in a letter to Biden on Friday as part of their sprawling probe into the Biden family’s activities in Ukraine, China, and elsewhere.

The Republican inquiry could pull back the curtain on Biden’s efforts to leverage his political connections for profit. "Vuk Jeremic has been connected to Hunter Biden’s business dealings and likely holds key information," an aide to Comer told the Washington Free Beacon.

Hunter Biden first met Jeremic in 2014, when Jeremic was a director at the Mexican state-owned energy firm Pemex and Biden was on the board at Burisma Holdings, a scandal-plagued Ukrainian energy firm. Emails show they were involved in discussions for a partnership between the two companies.

On Dec. 1, 2015, Jeremic approached Biden and his associate Eric Schwerin about a meeting with Ye Jianming, the then-chairman of CEFC China Energy, a Chinese energy conglomerate with suspected ties to Chinese intelligence.

"I am confident that many interesting projects may come out of that in the future," wrote Jeremic, who was a consultant for CEFC at the time. Biden would enter a lucrative joint business venture with CEFC in 2017.

In their letter Friday, Republicans asked Biden for records related to Jeremic and CEFC executives. They are seeking details of CEFC’s $5 million consulting deal with Biden, and another $1 million that Biden received to represent Patrick Ho, a CEFC executive who was charged with attempting to bribe two African officials on behalf of CEFC for oil rights during the United Nations General Assembly meeting in September 2014. It is unclear what services Biden provided Ho, whom Biden referred to in private correspondence as the "fucking spy chief of China."

Jeremic has his own ties to Ho. The Serbian made crucial introductions for Ho to the African officials he later tried to bribe, Idriss Deby and Sam Kutesa. Jeremic advised Ho to tell the African leaders "how fruitful the win-win cooperation with CEFC can be." Jeremic has not been accused of wrongdoing in the case and testified on behalf of Ho at his trial. Ho was sentenced to three years in prison for violating the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act.

Former chief medical health officer convicted of sexually assaulting child in Alberta

On Tuesday, the Court of King's Bench of Alberta Justice Shaina Leonard convicted Kelowna-native Dr. Albert de Villiers of sexually assaulting a child and sexual interference in multiple incidents in Grande Prairie, Alberta, between 2018 and 2020.

Disturbing news from British Columbia has emerged as the former chief medical health officer to Interior Health (IH) has been found guilty of sexually touching a child.

On Tuesday, the Court of King's Bench of Alberta Justice Shaina Leonard convicted Kelowna-native Dr. Albert de Villiers of sexually assaulting a child and sexual interference in multiple incidents in Grande Prairie, Alberta, between 2018 and 2020.

At the time he received the charges, he worked as IH's chief medical health officer from the summer of 2020 to June 2021, as the health authority's go-to person for communicating COVID information to the public.

Before moving to the Okanagan, de Villiers worked as a medical health officer for Alberta Health Services for 16 years. The allegations he's been convicted of occurred while Alberta Health Services employed him.

The disgraced doctor's conviction comes after a three-day trial last month.

During the trial, which ran from January 10 to 12 in Grande Prairie, Alberta, the court heard testimony from the victim, who's now 11 years old, the child's parents, and de Villiers himself.

Any information that could identify the victim is protected under a publication ban.

According to court proceedings, the child told his mother in May 2021 that de Villiers had previously shown him pornographic videos during several sleepovers and touched his penis.

The child said de Villiers had put his mouth on the child's penis.

The child, who was between seven and nine years old when the assaults occurred, informed the police that they happened repeatedly.

When the police arrested de Villiers the following month, an officer asked him if he had ever licked the child's penis. De Villiers asked the officer to "define lick."

De Villiers testified that his arrest overwhelmed and confused him, so he had asked the officer to clarify the allegation of licking the child's penis.

During his trial, he admitted to sharing a tent with the child and a sibling during a campout. He also said he once slept alone in a basement bedroom with the child.

The child testified that he told his mother in May 2021 about the pornography de Villiers had shown him and the sexual touching. He said de Villiers had explicitly told him not to tell his parents because de Villiers could go to jail if he did.

The child clarified in court that de Villiers manipulated him during the repeated assaults.

During her closing statements, Crown prosecutor Amber Pickrell focused heavily on a voicemail de Villiers left for the child's father in June 2021, after the child's family had stopped returning his calls and blocked him on social media.

Pickrell read a copy of the voicemail transcript in court, where de Villiers said he would not have further contact with the victim's family and should have come forward with what he did.

"All I can say is that I will not have contact with you again … I am extremely sorry that what happened did happen, and [I] know [I] should have come to you earlier to tell you what happened," said de Villiers.

"It's just [one] thing lead to another, and [what] I did was wrong. I take responsibility for what I have done wrong."

De Villiers denied the allegations against him and claimed he had left the voicemail to apologize for overstepping his role as a friend by playing a quasi-parental role in the child's life.

He testified that June 2021 was a very stressful time as he worked to manage the COVID pandemic in BC's Interior.

Justice Leonard rejected de Villiers' explanations and ruled the child's testimony was reliable and credible.

"I do not believe the accused," said Leonard in her ruling. "I find that the text of the voicemail is clear, that the accused is apologizing for something specific that had occurred, and that the accused knew what he was apologizing for.

"I accept that the accused was either attempting to mislead the police … or he had not yet settled on a story that would explain the voicemail."

Additionally, Leonard said nothing in the RCMP officer's question about whether or not de Villiers licked the child's penis "could have caused confusion."
