Many years ago, in the 1980s I worked with a young White Scottish Presbyterian girl who was going to law school. Her dad worked at the Chicago Stock Exchange and was friends with one of the partners at the Downtown Law Firm that I worked at, and he got his daughter a summer job there as a Court Clerk.
I recall her telling a story one day, about how many of the kids that she had gone to high school with and who lived in her neighborhood, were Jewish. She called the Jewish girls "Jewish Princesses." She told us that the Jewish Princesses all had to get summer jobs, usually working at a fast food place or other minimum wage job. I asked her why they would do that if their families were wealthy. I guess they thought that it would build character to have to do an honest day's labor.
Anyways, she said that she and her friends would go to the fast food place and make fun of the Jewish Princess getting her hands dirty.
This was all very odd to me.
I really didn't know very much about Jewish people. The only Jewish people that I knew personally, were literally doctors or lawyers.
Then I read a story about how Rahm Emanuel sliced off the end of his middle finger while he was working at a Arby's when he was a teenager.
I wonder if the story is even true.
