On the 10th of February, 2008, lightning hit the statue during a heavy thunderstorm, inflicting minor damage to the fingers, head, and brows. The state government of Rio de Janeiro launched a restoration operation to replace parts of the exterior soapstone layers and fix the monument’s lightning rods.
Not the first time but the first time since lightning rods went in.

Actually it reads as they had to fix the rods so probably always had them (lightning rods) would make sense for a tall structure atop a mountain, kek
Well time to do some laundry.
