US leads the rest of the world with $196 billion given to Ukraine amid war with Russia

Russia first invaded Ukraine on Feb. 24, 2022

The United States continues to lead the world in contributions to Ukraine with nearly $200 billion in promised or sent aid, as the U.S. ally continues its fight against Russia.

According to the Ukrainian government, the U.S. leads all countries with $196 billion in total military, financial and humanitarian aid to Ukraine between Jan. 24, 2022 through Nov. 20, 2022. Germany has sent the second-most funds, with $172 billion sent in that span.

In that same span, the rest of the world has contributed less than $75 billion of total aid, with most of that sum coming from the United Kingdom ($28.2 billion), Poland ($24.3 billion), and Estonia ($5.48 billion).

These figures do not include loans sent to Ukraine or additional contributions that were approved by their respective governments between Dec. 2022 and Feb. 2023.

Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has visited each of these top contributing countries, except Estonia.

The growing figures come as the Ukraine-Russia war nears its one-year mark. Russia first invaded on Feb. 24, 2022.

Some members of Congress are looking to put a stop to the superabundant spending by the U.S. government, including Rep. Matt Gaetz, who introduced a resolution to end military and financial aid to Ukraine.

"How much more for Ukraine? Is there any limit?" asked Gaetz, R-Fla., on the House floor. "Which billionth dollar really kicks in the door? Which redline we set will we not later cross?"

The proposal also urges Ukraine and Russia to seek a peace deal, requiring them to renew their negotiations.

The "Ukraine Fatigue Resolution" has at least 10 co-sponsors and calls for the U.S. to "end its military and financial aid to Ukraine and urges all combatants to reach a peace agreement."

The resolution notes the U.S. has been the top contributor to the Ukrainian war effort, providing financial, military, and humanitarian aid to the U.S. ally.

In January, President Biden approved additional security assistance, including 31 Abrams M1 tanks to Ukraine. On top of that, reports suggest another $2 billion could be in the pipeline.

"This is about freedom, freedom for Ukraine, freedom everywhere," Biden said last month.

Gaetz’s resolution claims the U.S. is inadvertently contributing to civilian casualties by providing weapons and potentially prolonging what he called an "everlasting conflict."

"America is in a state of managed decline, and it will exacerbate if we continue to hemorrhage taxpayer dollars toward a foreign war," said Gaetz, a member of the House Armed Services Committee. "We must suspend all foreign aid for the War in Ukraine and demand that all combatants in this conflict reach a peace agreement immediately."

Co-sponsors of the resolution include Reps. Andy Biggs, R-Ariz., Lauren Boebert, R-Colo., Paul Gosae, R-Ariz., Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., Anna Paulina Luna, R-Fla., Thomas Massie, R-Ky., Mary Miller, R-Ill., Barry Moore, R-Ala., Ralph Norman, R-S.C. and Matt Rosendale, R-Mont.

SNL post-production editors are prepared to strike: ‘Everyone who works here is on the same page’

The editors who work behind the scenes at “SNL” are making their voices heard and are prepared to strike.

On Jan. 12, the “SNL” staff members who create the comedy series’ pre-taped programming approved a strike authorization vote, Variety reports. The editors unionized with the Motion Picture Editors Guild last October.

Although bargaining sessions have been taking place with NBC, an agreement has not been reached. There is still no framework in place, with the main issues reported to surround “healthcare plans.”

SNL cast members showed their support at the end of last week’s Feb. 3 episode. During the credit scroll, James Austin Johnson and Colin Jost could be seen sporting “Contract Now” t-shirts.

A group of post-production editors were also handing out leaflets to people entering 30 Rock prior to the episode. An online petition for the workers has already garnered over 1,000 signatures.

“We work very long hours with quick turnarounds,” one source who works for the show told the Daily News. “Post Production deserves their union contract because of the work they do, and because of how crucial they are to the show’s video sketches.”

One of those quick turnarounds was captured in the widely popular Mario Kart sketch which aired last week, featuring host Pedro Pascal and heavy visual effects.

The editors behind the recent skit on "Saturday Night Live," which parodied Mario Kart featuring Padro Pascal as the titular character, are in a labor dispute with NBC. (NBC)

“That should take weeks, [it’s] done in two days,” said another source who spoke with Variety, explaining that many editors work well into the night and at all hours to ensure the sketches are ready to air on Saturday night. The editors believe their efforts should warrant better benefits in their contract.

“We’ve gotten support from the actual show itself, and they’ve been very supportive. It’s NBC holding it back,” said the source.

The show is currently on a two-week break, but “everybody is ready to [strike] when necessary. We’ve all agreed that when ‘enough is enough,’ we’re looking at NBC.”

“Everyone who works here is on the same page and understands how valued and important post-production is,” The News’ production insider said.

Despite recently passing legislation that will impose hundreds of billions of dollars in taxes on America’s job creators, my Democratic colleagues are using a new Government Accountability Office report as justification for a push to raise taxes even further on businesses they think aren’t paying their “fair share.” But the report, which examines the average effective tax rates of large corporations before and after the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017, argues more in favor of the GOP reforms than Democrats admit.

Issued on the request of the Democratic leaders of the Senate Finance and Senate Budget committees, the report elicited pronouncements from that side of the aisle that the GOP tax reforms provide corporate windfalls. The day it was released to the public, then-Budget Committee Chairman Sen. Bernie Sanders railed, “We need to repeal the Trump tax breaks for the rich and demand that the largest corporations in America finally start paying their fair share of taxes.”

GOP Delusions of Trumpism Without Trump

Among traditional Republicans, there is another tentative flirtation with hopefulness that the Trump phenomenon is passing.

The American political community is in a brief hiatus between the Democrats’ surprisingly good midterm results and the opening of the launch season for the presidential aspirants of both parties. There is a good deal of agitation among the Democrats that the president should not seek reelection and a number of recent developments, including the ludicrous imbroglio over improper retention of classified documents, indicate that the powers behind the scenes in that party are scheming to ease their leader out.
