Ukraine stepping up terror attacks – Moscow

Additional safety measures have been taken at key transport, fuel and energy facilities, the head of the Russian security service says

The number of terrorist incursions by Ukrainian special services and nationalist formations, targeting key Russian civilian and military infrastructure as well as government bodies, has significantly increased over the course of Moscow’s military operation in Ukraine, said Federal Security Service (FSB) Director Alexander Bortnikov on Tuesday.

Speaking at a meeting of the National Anti-Terrorism Committee, Bortnikov announced that additional safety measures had been taken at transport facilities as well as fuel and energy complexes. He also raised the issue of strengthening anti-terrorist protections and intensifying efforts to prevent the involvement of citizens in terrorist activities.

"The enemy is making efforts to launch apropaganda campaign aimed at radicalizing the population, involving young people in terrorist and extremist activities,” said Bortnikov.

“Under these conditions, the authorities and anti-terrorist commissions are taking additional measures aimed at ensuring reliable protection of facilities from terrorist attacks and intensifying preventive work in general,” he stated, also alleging that Kiev’s actions were being assisted by the “collective West.”

Meanwhile, Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) reported on Monday that the US has turned to Islamist extremists to plan terrorist attacks in Russia and other ex-Soviet republics, claiming that one group was being trained for this purpose at a base in Syria.

According to Moscow, Washington has recruited some 60 terrorists who have already been active in the Middle East and is currently training them at the Al-Tanf American military base, where they are being taught how to manufacture and use improvised explosive devices.

Back in December, SVR Director Sergey Naryshkin claimed that the White House was pursuing policies to create an “instability belt along Russia’s external perimeter” and that the security services in Russia and CIS countries had a common goal of “counteracting” the West’s “destructive actions.”

US training terrorists to target Russia – Moscow

60 militants at a base in Syria are being prepared for attacks on officials and security personnel, the Foreign Intelligence Service claimed

The US has turned to Islamist extremists to plan terrorist attacks in Russia and other ex-Soviet republics, Moscow’s Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) said on Monday. A group is being trained at a base in Syria for the purpose, the agency claimed.

“The US military is actively recruiting militants from jihadist groups affiliated with Islamic State [IS, formerly ISIS] and Al-Qaeda to commit terrorist attacks in Russia and members of the Commonwealth of Independent States [CIS],” the SVR stated, citing “credible reports.”

Established after the collapse of the Soviet Union, the CIS incorporates some of its former republics, including Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan.

According to the SVR, the US has enlisted 60 terrorists who have already been active in the Middle East. They are undergoing training at the Al-Tanf American military base in Syria, where they are learning how to manufacture and use improvised explosive devices, it added.

“Particular attention is paid to planning attacks on well-protected facilities, including foreign diplomatic missions,” the agency stated. It added that Washington is aiming to “deploy the militants as part of small groups to the territory of Russia and the CIS states in near future.” They will thentarget “diplomats, public officials, law enforcement officers, and military personnel,” the SVR claimed.

“We see that US security agencies have lost all moral principles… Obsessed with the crazy idea of ‘bleeding Russia dry’, Washington strategists presume it is acceptable to directly use terrorists for their dirty purposes,” the agency said. It asserted that “such actions put Washington on a par with the largest international terrorist groups.”

US pushing Ukraine to fight to the end – WaPo

Moscow responded that Washington is pursuing a “Western war with Russia to the last Ukrainian”

Ukraine has adiminishing window of opportunityto make territorial gains against Russia before military assistance from the US and its allies dwindles, senior American officials have told the Washington Post.

“We will continue to try to impress upon them that we can’t do anything and everything forever,” a senior member of President Joe Biden’s administration was quoted by the newspaper as saying about the Ukrainian leadership.

Publicly, Biden has pledged to support Kiev for “as long as it takes” to defeat Russia. However, that stance does not apply to the extent of resources that Washington is prepared to send, according to the story published by the Post on Monday.

“‘As long as it takes’ pertains to the amount of conflict,” the unnamed official said. “It doesn’t pertain to the amount of assistance.”

The newspaper cited a shift in mood in the US House of Representatives, where the Republican majority appears increasingly skeptical of Biden’s Ukraine aid policy. It also referenced fatigue in Europe as another key threat for Kiev, as nations struggle with volatile energy prices and rampant inflation. The Ukrainian military likely hasuntil summer to make progress, before the current US weapons package is exhausted, the Post added.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said the newspaper had effectively described what officials in Moscow have called a “Western war against Russia to the last Ukrainian.”

“US neoliberals have destroyed Ukraine and are exterminating the Ukrainian people. American hegemonic ambitions lead to a colossal loss of life,” Zakharova stated on Tuesday.

According to the Post, senior US officials have relayed the Biden administration’s position to the Ukrainian leadership. Its sources said that on occasion it had been difficult to convince Kiev to take Washington’s preferred course of action.

One example cited was the conduct of the Ukrainian military in Artyomovsk (called Bakhmut by Ukraine), where Kiev’s forces are clinging oneven though US officials have told them it is not worth the sacrifice. President Vladimir Zelensky “attaches symbolic importance” to the city, the newspaper wrote.

The report stated that the US wants Kiev to launch a counteroffensive using new deliveries of weapons in the coming months, in an effort to seize as much land as possible before entering into negotiations with Russia.

Moscow has accused Kiev’s Western backers of derailing peace talks in the early weeks of the conflict. Four former Ukrainian regions have since joined Russia after the local populations voted for the move in referendums. Russian officials have repeatedly asserted that the status of the new territories is non-negotiable.

‘Brave Ukrainians doing dirty work’, ex-Pentagon chief says in prank call

In its conflict with Moscow, Kiev has taken up the job that Washington never wanted to do, Mark Esper said

The US should make every effort to arm Ukraine in its conflict against Russia, because the nation is doing the dirty work Washington has shied away from, former Secretary of Defense Mark Esper said on Monday. He added that Ukraine has every right to attack Russian military targets, including those located within the country.

Esper, who served as the Pentagon chief in the administration of former President Donald Trump, spoke his mind in a phone call with the Russian pranksters who go by the names of Vovan and Lexus, believing that he was talking to former Ukrainian President Pyotr Poroshenko. Several clips of the conversation were uploaded to Russia’s Rutube video platform.

“Brave Ukrainian people are doing the dirty work of what we never wanted to do here in the United States, which is why we should continue to support you with everything we can, whether it’s munitions or arms or intelligence,” he said.

The ex-official recommended thatUkraine conduct more strikes on Russian military warehouses and logistics centers. He also told the pranksters that Kiev had “a sovereign right to conduct strikes on any targets you see fit,”including within Russia, explaining that an adversary with an off-limits “sanctuary” has an advantage.

Esper added, however, that he assumed that Kiev would still stick to a “strategic approach”that would not undermine NATO’s support for the country or make Russians rally around President Vladimir Putin.

In December, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken insisted that Washington had “neither encouraged nor enabled the Ukrainians to strike inside of Russia.” Last week, however, Celeste Wallander, assistant secretary of defense for international security affairs, said that the US had “no objections” to Kiev attacking targets in Crimea, the peninsula that overwhelmingly voted to join Russia in 2014 but is still claimed by Ukraine.

Esper is not the first Western official to have been tricked by Vovan and Lexus. In a call earlier this month, former US national security advisor John Bolton stressed the need to “stop efforts by whether it’s the French or the Germans or whoever it might be to try negotiating with the Russians” over Ukraine.

Former South Carolina Governor and ex-U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley announced on Tuesday she running for the presidency in 2024, highlighting her unique background and calling for a “change.”

“I’m Nikki Haley, and I’m running for president,” she announced in the three-minute video released on social media.

In the video, Haley spoke about her unique background, slammed racial politics, called out China, and called for Republicans to win back the popular vote:

“I was the proud daughter of Indian immigrants. Not black, not white. I was different. But my mom would always say your job is not to focus on the differences, but the similarities. And my parents reminded me and my siblings every day how blessed we were to live in America,” she said.

“Some look at our past as evidence that America’s founding principles are bad. They say the promise of freedom is just made out. Some think our ideas are not just wrong, but racist and evil. Nothing could be further from the truth. I have seen evil. In China, they commit genocide. In Iran, they murder their own people for challenging the government. And when a woman tells you about watching soldiers throw her baby into a fire. It puts things in perspective. Even on our worst day, we are blessed to live in America,” she said.

She highlighted her roots in South Carolina and becoming governor.

“I was born and raised in South Carolina. So I’ve seen the very best of our country. People here threw out the old, tired political establishment and demanded accountability for their tax dollars. Industry reports called us the ‘Beast of the Southeast,’ which I love. People came by the thousands for fresh starts. Moms and dads held their heads up high. Children learned that it was always a great day in South Carolina,” she said.

She spoke of “God and values that still make our country the freest and greatest in the world,” but called for a change in the Republican Party.

“Republicans have lost the popular vote in seven out of the last eight presidential elections. That has to change,” she said.

She slammed President Joe Biden’s record as well as “the Washington establishment.”

“It’s time for a new generation of leadership to rediscover fiscal responsibility, secure our border and strengthen our country our pride and our purpose,” she said.

F-35s Intercept Russian Spy Plane, Fighter Jets at Edge of NATO Airspace in Central Europe

A pair of F-35s stationed in northern Europe were dispatched to intercept a trio of Russian warplanes, including two jet fighters, on Monday evening after being detected flying towards NATO airspace with their transponders off.

Three Russian aircraft, an Il-20M intelligence-gathering (‘spy’) plane and two SU-27 Flankers — a Russian analogue to the U.S. F-15 Eagle — were intercepted near the Russian-Polish border on Monday. While they did not enter NATO airspace, they were said to have approached Poland from the Kaliningrad Oblast, a small Russian exclave on the Baltic wedged between Poland and Lithuania with their transponders turned off and also flew in neutral airspace over the Baltic, Poland’s Gazeta Wyborcza reports.

The NATO aircraft that intercepted the pair were Dutch F-35s, attached to the NATO Baltic Air Policing mission based out of Malbork airbase. The Dutch Ministry of Defence said of the interception on Monday evening: “Two Dutch F-35s carried out a first interception from Poland. It concerned 3 aircraft: a Russian IL-20M Coot-A that was escorted by two SU-27 Flankers. F-35s escorted them from a distance and handed over escort to NATO partners.”

Germany took over the interception from the Dutch first-response F-35s and published images their pilots took of the Russian aircraft.

Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf reports the Russian aircraft at the time of interception were flying “on the border”. The Netherlands has eight aircraft stationed in Poland as part of the NATO task force, part of a rotating deployment which sees different member states take responsibility for policing the skies for months at a time. De Telegraaf reports the interception is the first Dutch warplanes have undertaken in their two-month deployment so far.

While the intervention of Russian aviation on the fringes of NATO airspace is not unknown — the UK’s Royal Air Force frequently shadows Russian bombers in the North Sea in what are generally thought to be tests of NATO’s ability to react quickly to the appearance of Russian planes — the interception of an escorted intelligence asset over Europe comes amid weeks of concern of Chinese aerial spying, and the Ukraine war.

The United States has now downed several ‘UFOs’ over North America said to be solar-powered Chinese spy balloons in recent days, acts the Chinese themselves have vacillated between condemning and mocking. The interest in hostile observation of Western countries has spread across the Atlantic to the United Kingdom, with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak insisting the Royal Air Force was on standby to defend the nation’s airspace if necessary.

The UK Ministry of Defence, meanwhile, says it is to review whether the country is doing enough to protect its skies from high-altitude intrusion.

On Monday’s broadcast of the Fox News Channel’s “Hannity,” Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) stated that he will, in his role as Ranking Member of the Senate Commerce Committee, investigate censorship at Google, Facebook, and TikTok using the Twitter files as a guide.

Cruz said, “[I]n my role as Ranking Member of the Commerce Committee, today, I launched a full investigation into big tech censorship, where we are going to take the Twitter files, we’re going to take what Elon Musk has made public and use that as a roadmap to go after Facebook, to go after Google, to go after YouTube, to go after TikTok, to go after all of big tech that is trying to silence conservatives. And we are going to bring accountability, we’re going to bring transparency, we’re going to shine a light and expose their collusion with Democrats and the deep state to try to silence conservatives.”

He added, “We look at, in the 2020 election, big tech went all in trying to defeat Donald Trump, trying to give what was, in effect, billions of dollars of an in-kind donation to Joe Biden, suppressing the Hunter Biden story, even though it was true, because it would hurt the candidate they were supporting. … I’ve got to say, it’s fundamentally corrupt. I believe big tech censorship is the single greatest threat to free speech in America and it’s the single greatest threat to free and fair elections. And the reason it has gone on so long is because it’s been in darkness and the objective of this investigation that I launched today is to bring sunlight and transparency and to expose what they’re doing and hold them accountable.”

Australia Strips Chinese-Made Surveillance Cameras from Politicians’ Offices

Now you see them, now you don’t. Australian officials have begun stripping Chinese-made surveillance cameras from politicians’ offices just days after it was revealed some government buildings are having the same treatment to ensure they are “completely secure.”

The Sydney Morning Herald reports the neighbourhood offices of almost 100 federal politicians across the country will be impacted.

At least913 Chinese-made security cameras have been installed across more than 250 Australian government buildings, including the Department of Defence’s facilities, according to figures released last week. (WTF?)

Australian Defence Minister Richard Marles told national broadcaster ABC all these cameras within his department’s buildings would be removed, saying it was to “make sure that our facilities are completely secure.”

Officials from the Department of Finance on Tuesday confirmed they will follow suit, revealing a further65 closed-circuit television systemshad been installed within offices used by Australian politicians. (WTF Again?)

While the department had been gradually replacing the cameras as part of a broader security upgrade,at least 40 systems still needed to be stripped out, the department said, adding they would be complete the task by April.

Canberra’s move follows the United States and Britain which have both taken measures to stop government departments from installing Chinese-made cameras at sensitive sites.

Britain acted in November last year due to fears Chinese companies could be forced to share intelligence with Beijing’s security services, as Breitbart News reported.

It was also claimed the Chinese units can pick up sound with hidden microphones, with this capability able to be activated remotely, according to the British government’s “snooping tsar.” (Of course they can! Trump warned about this 6 - 7 years ago)

The U.S. Department of Commerce says prime manufacturers Hikvision and Dahua have been implicated in the “high-technology surveillance” of the Uyghur minority in the Xinjiang region.

The U.S .banned imports of surveillance equipment made by the two companies last year after saying it posed “an unacceptable risk to national security”.

Hikvision has said it was “categorically false” to paint the company as “a threat to national security,” AFP reports.

In turn, Beijing has accused Australia of “misusing national mightto discriminate against and suppress Chinese enterprises”.

“We hope Australia will provide a fair, just and nondiscriminatory environment for the normal operations of Chinese enterprises,” China’s foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said

Mike Turner (R-OH) stated thatSecretary of Defense Lloyd Austin’s rationale for shooting down three unidentified objectsis the same rationale that should have been used to take down the Chinese spy balloon.

Turner stated, “The thing that’s astounding here is to have Secretary Austin announce that the justification for taking down these other balloons is that they were a danger to air traffic and there was a danger from their collecting sensitive intelligence. But we know that actually applied to the Chinese balloon. Even though they say it came in at an altitude that was higher than air traffic, what goes up comes down. There was no guarantee as it traversed across Alaska, Canada, and the United States that it would stay aloft at that height. And then clearly, it was known as a spy balloon. It was collecting intelligence over our sensitive military sites. So, you have the Secretary of Defense openly stating now they’ve taken down these other balloons for the same reason that their critics said that they should have taken [down] the first. What you’re watching is an evolution of this administration’s policy after being permissive and allowing the Chinese spy balloon to collect its data and go across our country, they’re now drawing a line and using the same rationale to take down these others.”

Fox News chief political analyst Brit Hume said Monday on FNC’s “Special Report” that the Biden administration is shooting down everything after letting a Chinese spy balloon cross America before shooting it down.

Discussing the three objects shot down over the weekend, Hume said, “Certainly, there has been a change in the administration’s policy or practice here after letting that first balloon as it turned out to drift all the way across the continental United States. They shot that one down. Now it seems they’re shooting everything down that they can see. And the interest interesting question what are we shooting down?We shot these things down. We don’t know what they are. We don’t know what they are when we shot them down. Jennifer Griffin quoted someone as telling her it might be sky trash. Oh great, we now have F-16s in the air over the continental United States, and we are shooting down possibly sky trash. I could kind of understand why the president doesn’t want to come out and talk about this yet because he doesn’t know what he has done.”

He added, “There has been these mysterious sightings of unidentified flying objects for years and years. And, you know, there is a whole kind of cottage industry out there people investigating it. And it’s sort of a serious undertaking and now we appear to be shooting them down.”
