Military AI Applications Will Be As Game-Changing As Nukes: Former Google CEO

Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt says that artificial intelligence will be as game-changing as nuclear weapons when it comes to military applications.

"Every once in a while, a new weapon, a new technology comes along that changes things. Einstein wrote a letter to Roosevelt in the 1930s saying that there is this new technology—nuclear weapons—that could change war, which it clearly did," Schmidt told Wired. "I would argue that [AI-powered] autonomy and decentralised, distributed systems are that powerful."

With Schmidt’s help, a similar view has taken root inside the DOD over the past decade, where leaders believe AI will revolutionize military hardware, intelligence gathering, and backend software. In the early 2010s the Pentagon began assessing technology that could help it maintain an edge over an ascendant Chinese military. The Defense Science Board, the agency’s top technical advisory body, concluded that AI-powered autonomy would shape the future of military competition and conflict. -Wired

According to Schmidt, the US military has good people, but a bad system which could benefit greatly by upgrading their technology.

"Let's imagine we’re going to build a better war-fighting system," he said, outlining what would amount to an enormous overhaul of the US military. "We would just create a tech company … It would build a large number of inexpensive devices that were highly mobile, that were attritable, and those devices—or drones—would have sensors or weapons, and they would be networked together."

The problem with today’s Pentagon is hardly money, talent, or determination, in Schmidt’s opinion. He describes the US military as “great human beings inside a bad system”—one that evolved to serve a previous era dominated by large, slow, expensive projects like aircraft carriers and a bureaucratic system that prevents people from moving too quickly. Independent studies and congressional hearings have found that it can take years for the DOD to select and buy software, which may be outdated by the time it is installed. Schmidt says this is a huge problem for the US, because computerization, software, and networking are poised to revolutionize warfare. -Wired

Schmidt, coincidentally (or not) is backing a company called Istari, which uses machine learning to virtually assemble and test war machines.

FDA advisory panel recommends over-the-counter availability for Narcan

Amid a mounting fentanyl crisis, Narcan has emerged as a leading means of treating exposure to the drug.

An advisory panel for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Wednesday voted unanimously to recommend that the agency make Narcan available for over-the-counter use.

Naloxone is currently a prescription-only drug used to treat opioid overdoses. Narcan is a brand-name nasal spray containing Naloxone.

The panel voted 19-0 to approve it for over-the-counter sales, determining there was little risk involved in expanding the drug's availability, The Hill reported.

The FDA will formally decide the matter on March 29.

The advisory panel's decision is not binding but will likely carry weight with the agency next month.

Elizabeth Coykendall, a temporary voting member of the panel, said "[t]here's no reason to keep this as a prescription, let's get it out there and save some lives," according to The Hill.

Amid a mounting fentanyl crisis, Narcan has emerged as a leading means of treating exposure to the highly lethal drug.

Jim Jordan subpoenas Big Tech CEOs after Twitter Files reveals potential Biden collusion

Meta's Mark Zuckerberg, Alphabet's Sundar Pichai, Microsoft's Satya Nadella, Apple's Tim Cook, and Amazon's Andy Jassy were subpoenaed over whether they colluded with the Biden admin to censor free speech.

On Wednesday, the House Judiciary Committee issued subpoenas to the CEOs of five Big Tech giants, Meta's Mark Zuckerberg, Alphabet's Sundar Pichai, Microsoft's Satya Nadella, Apple's Tim Cook, and Amazon's Andy Jassy, demanding they divulge whether their platforms colluded with the federal government to censor free speech.

The committee notably chose not to subpoena Twitter's Elon Musk, who has been more kind to conservatives than his counterparts at the aforementioned companies since taking over the company last year.

"Congress has an important role in protecting and advancing fundamental free speech principles, including by examining how private actors coordinate with the government to suppress First Amendment-protected speech," the House Judiciary Committee said in a press release. "These subpoenas are the first step in holding Big Tech accountable."

The committee went on to note that they had first approached the CEOs in December, calling their responses in the time since "woefully inadequate." Per the freshly issued subpoenas, they will have until March 23 to turn over "all requested documents and communications."

These include "communications between the [the company] and the Executive Branch, internal [company] communications discussing communications from the Executive Branch, and [company] communications with third parties that may have been working with the Executive Branch, in addition to other key information."

Jordan slammed each of the companies, reminding them that in contrast to their opaque policies, "Twitter recently set a benchmark for how transparent Big Tech companies can be about interactions with government over censorship."

"The Twitter Files," he continued, "have exposed how Big Tech and the federal government have worked hand in hand in ways that undermine First Amendment principles. Numerous internal documents from Twitter reflect the weaponization of the federal government’s power to censor speech online."

Jordan, who also chairs the newly formed Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government, has long accused Big Tech of being "out to get conservatives," suggesting they were "increasingly willing to undermine First Amendment values by complying with the Biden Administration’s directives that suppress freedom of speech online."

Drag Show Fundraises for LGBT ‘Affirming Youth Group,’ Offers Drag Lessons for Minors

A group of Chicago-based drag performers called the “Kiki Queens” used drag performances to fundraise for an organization that hosts LGBT “affirming youth groups” for children in 7th grade and even teaches minors how to perform in drag.

The Kiki Queens describe themselves as “a group of live-singing Drag Queens and other specialty performers.” Their site also notes that the group’s mission “is to raise awareness and funds, through performance, for Chicago area nonprofits doing services in the LGBTQ+ community.”

In addition, their site states “To date, Kiki Queens and our supporters have helped raise over $125,000 for local LGBTQ+ nonprofits!”

The group has eight different performers, including “Tipsy Bubbles,” “Sassy Betch,” “Venus Envy,” and “Izzie Contagious.” The group’s site notes that “we don’t limit our performers to any one gender, gender-expression, sexual orientation, or even type of performance.”

One show, called “Bitchcraft” raised $6,488 for the Center on Youth Halsted, a pro-trans group that hosts “affirming” youth groups for minors.

“To Be Human (TBH) is Center on Halsted’s weekly all-inclusive youth group for 7th-12th graders who are LGBTQ+, questioning, and allies,” their site explains. One group is designed for minors who identify as transgender. The description reads “To Be… TGNC is a brave space designated for 7th-12th grade transgender, non-binary, agender, gender expansive and questioning youth. Together youth and staff create a network of support, care, resistance, and creative, joyful resilience.”

There’s also a group that is specifically designed for “LGBTQ+ young people of color.” The description says:

“To Be… QTPOC is a brave space designated for 7th- 12th grade LGBTQ+ young people of color. To Be… QTPOC provides a space for queer and trans young people of color to discuss and explore their experiences within the LGBTQ+ community and in society at large.”

Perhaps most concerning of all, the center has a program called “Dare to Drag,” the description of which explains “This year’s program features three cohorts of 5 – 7 students who will learn about the basics of drag, including performance, make-up skills, dance, and confidence.” Minors as young as 16 are accepted into the program.

It goes on to say “Each Cohort culminates in a performance, allowing the youth to show off the skills that they have learned in our Dreams of Drag Showcase in COH’s Hoover-Leppen Theater as well as an encore performance.”

There’s also a “Youth Horizons” program, which aims to build “caring relationships between LGBTQIA+ youth aged 12 -24 and adults to help youth grow in their queer and trans identities” as well as to “become lifelong contributing members of the LGBTQIA+ community.”

One aspect of the program specifically trains youth to become activists.“The youth program offers a wide variety of workshops and presentations each week that are focused on developing skills and knowledge in the areas of arts and culture” as well as “leadership and activism” and “sexual health and identity.”

Codex Sassoon, oldest near-complete Hebrew Bible, set to fetch up to $50m at auction

1,000-year-old codice, likely to become most expensive book or historical document ever sold, touted as ‘undeniably one of the most important and singular texts in human history’

A Hebrew Bible more than 1,000 years old is set to be sold at auction in New York for up to an estimated $50 million, Sotheby’s announced Wednesday.

The Codex Sassoon — which dates to the late ninth to early tenth century — is the earliest, most complete Hebrew Bible ever discovered.

It will become the most expensive historical document or manuscript to ever go under the hammer when Sotheby’s puts it up for auction in May.

“(It) is undeniably one of the most important and singular texts in human history,” said Richard Austin, Sotheby’s global head of books and manuscripts.

The Codex Sassoon is one of only two codices, or manuscripts, containing all 24 books of the Hebrew Bible to have survived into the modern era.

It is substantially more complete than the Aleppo Codex and older than the Leningrad Codex, two other famous early Hebrew Bibles, Sotheby’s said.

The manuscript bridges the Dead Sea Scrolls — which date back as early as the third century BCE — and today’s modernly accepted form of the Hebrew Bible.

It is named for previous owner David Solomon Sassoon (1880-1942) who assembled the most significant private collection of ancient Jewish texts in the world.

The book was considered lost for over 600 years following the destruction of a synagogue in northeast Syria where it was kept, until it reemerged in 1929, according to the New York Times. It has been in private hands since and is currently owned by Swiss financier and collector Jacqui Safra.

“This represents the first time the text appears in the form where we can really read and understand it,” Sharon Liberman Mintz, Sotheby’s senior Judaica consultant, told the US newspaper.

Regarding the high price tag, Mintz said the codice was expensive at the time, with over 100 animal skins needed to make. She added that it was written by a single scribe.

“It’s a masterpiece of scribal art,” she said.

She also noted it contains marks tracking the different owners over the years, which show the manuscript’s last owner before it went missing when the synagogue in the present-day Syrian city of Markada was destroyed until Sasoon purchased it in Frankfurt.

The document is being auctioned for the first time in more than 30 years, with a pre-sale estimate of between $30 million and $50 million.

In November 2021, Sotheby’s sold one of the first prints of the US Constitution for $43 million, a record price for a historical manuscript.

Launching presidential campaign, Nikki Haley declares support for ‘friend’ Israel

If successful, former US ambassador to the UN declares her administration will ‘stand by our friends Israel and Ukraine against Iran and Russia'

White House hopeful Nikki Haley promised to warmly support Israel should she be successful in her bid for the presidency in 2024.

Haley, a former South Carolina governor and United Nations ambassador during the Donald Trump administration, is betting that her boundary-breaking career as a woman and person of color who governed in the heart of the South before representing the US on the world stage can overcome entrenched support for her onetime boss and Republican competitor, who declared his candidacy in November.

Announcing her intention to run at an event in the historic coastal city of Charleston, Haley said she would “stand by our friends Israel and Ukraine against Iran and Russia.”

“I don’t believe in glass ceilings,” Haley said, continuing: “We need to create a country where anyone can do whatever they want.”

“May the best woman win,” she declared in front of cheering supporters.

In her presidential launch video, Haley can be seen touring Israel’s border with the Gaza Strip in a helicopter, followed by a shot of her walking alongside Likud MK Danny Danon, Israel’s former ambassador to the UN.

Danon and Haley both served overlapping terms at the UN, with Danon celebrating the announcement of his “good friend.”

“Nikki is a true friend of Israel. I have no doubt that she will always stand by our side. Likewise, Israel will always be the closest ally of the US. Good luck Nikki!” Danon tweeted.

Danon recalled hosting Haley for Shabbat dinner at his house.

“We spoke about politics and I told her about the difficulties of running a campaign in Israel. She told me that she never lost a campaign. We know that she is facing very interesting challenges ahead,” he told Arutz Sheva.
