Father killed by 'violent chicken': Man died with 'massive bleeding' while whispering 'rooster' after being attacked by aggressive bird at home in Ireland

Jasper Kraus was killed in April 2021 when he was attacked by his chicken

He suffered a deep cut to the back of his leg and could not be saved

A grandfather was killed by his violent chicken that previously attacked a child, an inquest in Ireland has heard.

Cancer survivor Jasper Kraus, who was living near Ballinasloe at the time, was killed on April 28 last year after he was attacked by a Brahma chicken.

The 67-year-old Dutchman, formerly from The Hague, Netherlands, suffered a heart attack after the bird drove its spur into his leg, causing him to lose litres of blood.

Police officers and his daughter Virginia Guinan found Mr Kraus lying in a pool of blood from the wound on the back of his leg. His lodger said he was able to whisper the word 'rooster' as he lost and regained consciousness.

Paramedics performed CPR on the victim but their efforts were unsuccessful.

Ms Guinan, 33, told an inquest into her father's death that she raced to the house to find ambulance crews already at the grim scene, the Irish Mirror reported.

She had been contacted by her father's lodger, Corey O'Keeffe, who had been living with Mr Kraus for two years and looked after the animals.

Mr O'Keeffe had just returned home from a night shift at 8am. Before heading to bed, he fed the animals and greeted Mr Kraus. Not long after, the inquest heard, the tenant was woken by the Dutchman shouting 'come quick'.

The lodger performed CPR for 25 minutes on the victim before an ambulance arrived, according to Galway Beo.

Giving evidence, he said blood was coming out of Mr Kraus's leg and that he noticed a large wound in the man's calf and scratches on his other leg.

As he was falling in and out of consciousness, Mr Kraus told his tenant 'rooster', the inquest heard. He eventually lost so much blood that he suffered a heart attack.

Dr Annette Jennings told the inquest in a deposition read out at the hearing that paramedics were attempting to resuscitate Mr Kraus when she arrived at the scene in Killahornia, County Roscommon. He was pronounced dead at 3.24pm.

She said the circumstances around the man's death were unusual on account of the wound being inflicted by a chicken.

Dr Ramadan Shatwan, who carried out an autopsy on Mr Kraus, said the victim's face was covered in dried blood but that no cuts on his face were found. He also told the inquest that his lower limbs were covered in dried blood.

The cause of death was due to lethal cardiac arrhythmia in the context of severe coronary atheroma and cardiomegaly, Dr Shatwan said.

Ms Guinan said when she arrived at her father's house, she found her father in a pool of blood, with paramedics performing CPR.

She told the inquest that she followed the trail of blood to the Brahma chicken, which she said had blood on its claws.

The bereaved daughter said she knew it was the culprit because it had previously 'attacked my daughter', The Irish Mirror said.

She told the inquest that she had wanted to get rid of the chicken, but that her father, who was a big animal lover, wanted to keep it.

'My dad protested – he had too big of a heart and didn't want me to get rid of the rooster, so dad took it instead,' the newspaper reported.

Mr Kraus – a father of two and grandfather of two – was suffering from other health issues at the time of his death. He was in remission from cancer and coroner said his heart was 'severely calcified'.

He had been outside visiting his dog's grave when he was attacked.

Stolen Black Labradors Found Dead In 'Senseless Tragedy': Police

Story by Anders Anglesey • Yesterday 9:00 AM

Virginia police have described the discovery of two dead dogs that were stolen as a "senseless tragedy."

Police in Franklin County, south of Roanoke, southwest Virginia, said its officers were called to respond to reports that two dead dogs had been found by the side of the road at the 500 block of Carolina Springs Road at about 3:15 p.m. on Tuesday.

The dogs turned out to be the labradors, Colby and Caleb, that were stolen from Waid Park, in Rocky Mount, on Wednesday, February 8.

A Franklin County police spokesperson said: "Not the outcome we all had hoped for."

A Facebook post shared on Tuesday read: "To our great dismay, the dogs have been identified as the two black labs, Colby and Caleb, that were stolen from the Waid Park area last week.

"Both have been taken to the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg for further examination and cause of death determination.

"We are appalled at this senseless tragedy and extend our condolences to the owners of these dogs."

Franklin police have launched an investigation into the death and have asked anyone with information to call (540) 483-3000.

According to the Franklin County Humane Society Planned Parenthood and Adoption Center, the dogs had broken away from their owner to chase after a squirrel when "two Hispanic males lured them" to an off-white Jeep Grand Cherokee. The men loaded the dogs and drove off while the owner called out to them.

A $2,000 reward was offered for the safe return of Colby and Caleb with "no questions asked."

According to a 2019 post by the American Humane organization, approximately 10 million pets are lost in the U.S. with many ending up in animal shelters.

It added: "Only 15 percent of dogs and 2 percent of cats in shelters without ID tags or microchips are reunited with their owners."

American Humane said people who want to have a better chance of being reunited with their pets, should they become separated from them, can do several things, including the following:

Make sure your pet always wears a collar with a current ID tag, rabies tag, and city/county license.

Include a contact name, address, and daytime and evening phone numbers on their ID tag.

Keep your pet's licenses, ID tag, and microchip current. Make sure to update the tag if you change your address or phone numbers.

When moving or traveling, place a temporary tag on your pet with the phone number of someone who knows how to reach you.

Remember that even indoor pets need tags. Many strays in shelters are indoor pets who escaped and got lost.

Dogs saved from China slaughterhouses set to arrive in New York, first flight since CDC ban

Story by Angelica Stabile • Yesterday 11:00 AM

Aflight full of dogs rescued from China will soon touch down in the U.S. after the animals escaped imminent death at the hands of slaughterhouse operators.

Forty-six pups have been saved from slaughter by the New York-based American rescue organization No Dogs Left Behind.

The flight is scheduled to land at New York’s John F. Kennedy Airport this week, and then 32 dogs will be delivered to adoptive families across the U.S. that have patiently waited for the pups to arrive.

DOG IN DANGER REUNITED WITH US SOLDIER FOR FIRST TIME SINCE THEY BONDED OVERSEAS: ‘MAGICAL MOMENT’

The remaining 14 dogs rescued are still available for adoption.

Fox News Digital spoke with No Dogs Left Behind founder and president Jeffrey Beri about this rescue. It's the first since the CDC’s import ban on live animals due to high rabies risk in some countries of origin.

Beri said the ban hasn’t stopped his organization from pushing forward and saving the lives of innocent animals, utilizing their capabilities to rehabilitate and vaccinate dogs.

"There have been endless delays in the dogs coming [here], so it’s really a nail-biter," he said.

"We’re working feverishly with our teams in China."

"These have been ongoing issues that we've had," he went on. "But we lick our wounds and we roll up our sleeves and … we work together and, ultimately, the dogs make it home."

Beri revealed that many of the dogs that have been saved are small "designer dogs" such as Pomeranians.

This round-up of rescues happened throughout different areas of China, Beri added.

The pups were saved from dog traffickers at slaughterhouses and truck interceptions — some "just seconds" away from being slaughtered, he also said.

The rescue organization, founded in 2016, fights for global animal welfare laws and has a goal of ending the dog meat trade.

Escaped Zoo Owl Is Successfully Hunting In New York's Central Park

Story by Hilary Hanson • Yesterday 8:20 PM

A New York City owl has learned to hunt on his own after escaping from the Central Park Zoo.

Flaco, a 13-year-old Eurasian eagle-owl, flew the coop on Feb. 2 after an unidentified person vandalized his enclosure, cutting the mesh that had kept the bird from being able to fly away. The zoo mobilized to try to recapture Flaco, fearing that he wouldn’t be able to survive on his own. Born in captivity, the owl had never learned to hunt, prompting worries that he would simply starve to death.

In the meantime, Flaco’s growing flock of fans chronicled his journey on social media, most notably the Twitter account Manhattan Bird Alert. (That account also took some heat for publicizing Flaco’s whereabouts, with critics noting that crowds gathering to get a glimpse of the eagle-owl could impede the zoo’s recapture efforts.)

But on Sunday, the zoo released a hopeful update about Flaco’s self-reliance. It seems the owl has wisened up to the ways of the wild and managed to catch prey on his own.

“Several days ago, we observed him successfully hunting, catching and consuming prey,” the statement said. “We have seen a rapid improvement in his flight skills and ability to confidently maneuver around the park.”

Because of that development, the zoo said it would ease up its efforts to trap Flaco, though it would continue to “monitor” him and possibly recapture him in the future.

“We will continue to monitor him, though not as intensely, and look to opportunistically recover him when the situation is right.”

Though he’s proved able to feed himself, Flaco still faces challenges and dangers on his own.

“He may not possess all the skills and endurance required for life in the wild,” Richard Simon, wildlife unit director for the city’s parks department, told The New York Times.

And one major hazard for Flaco is a danger that also threatens the city’s native owls ― rat poison. Rodenticides work their way up the food chain, and predators like owls can die from eating poisoned rodents. In 2021, a barred owl named Barry was killed in a collision with a park truck. Investigators later found that Barry had a high level of rat poison in her system, which could have impaired her flying abilities and led to the crash.

Badly hurt barred owl in Va. euthanized after rescue, attempted treatment

Story by Dana Hedgpeth • Yesterday 2:52 PM

A barred owl that had been brought to a Virginia rescue center by a homeless man who found it severely injured on the side of a road has died, and experts are closely monitoring a bald eagle that was also being treated after it was hurt.

Rescuers at Blue Ridge Wildlife Center in Boyce, Va., said the owl had to be euthanized Tuesday after an infection it had developed turned into sepsis. The owl’s saga started earlier this month. It was brought to the wildlife center Feb. 2 after the homeless man found it near a brewery and asked an employee to help.

Jennifer Riley — a veterinarian at Blue Ridge — said the owl was probably attacked by a predator because it had several puncture wounds and three fractures, including on its beak, wing and leg. She said the quickness with which the owl was brought in for care helped the wildlife center get a jump-start on healing its bones.

Riley said she had been hopeful after a four-hour surgery because the owl was standing on its hurt leg.

But a few days ago, the owl’s condition changed.

“It looked depressed,” Riley said. She said it didn’t want to eat mice, so rescuers force-fed it. The owl couldn’t keep the mice down, so experts thought medications could be causing sickness and stopped administering them. Several rounds of bloodwork and tests showed that the owl had an infection, probably from its leg fracture, and sepsis, which probably caused the gastrointestinal problems.

“Once you’re septic, it’s very difficult to recover,” Riley said. They tried to treat the owl, but it was already suffering from organ failure.

A necropsy of the owl confirmed that “there was dead tissue in the heart and kidneys which explained why he was looking so bad these last few days,” Riley said.

The bald eagle is still in a critical state, Riley said. She said the eagle goes “back and forth between looking brighter and better, but she’s still acting out of sorts.” Riley suspects the bird has brain damage after possibly being hit by a vehicle or perhaps was electrocuted by a transformer, suffering brain damage and a skull fracture. The eagle had also suffered from lead poisoning, and Riley said she considers its condition critical.

The eagle was found by a farmer on his property, and animal control officials in Prince William County brought it to Riley’s facility Feb. 5.

What’s most concerning about the eagle’s condition, Riley said, is that they are typically strong animals and fearful of humans, but the injured eagle doesn’t react when she approaches. While eagles will usually try to bite or use their talons when a human comes close because that is their natural defense mechanism, this one hasn’t had “the appropriate reactions,” Riley said.

“We’re not giving up on anything yet, but she hasn’t made the progress in her mental status,” Riley said. “We’re going to give her time.”

Rachel Levine Says Some LGBT Children Need To Replace Parents With ‘One Supportive Adult’

Story by Harold Hutchison • Yesterday 3:28 PM

Assistant Secretary for Health Rachel Levine said some “LGBTQI+” children need to replace their parents with “one supportive adult” while criticizing a parental rights law as “a gag rule” in a video clip posted on Twitter Tuesday.

“One supportive adult,” Levine, who is transgender, said in the clip posted on Twitter. “I’d love it if that was always the parent, but it’s not always a parent. Frequently it’s a teacher, or a guidance counselor, or some other coach or another school personnel.”

“This law forbids kids essentially from — from talking to — to — to these people. Also it means that — that if you tell a teacher the teacher has to tell the parent,” Levine added. “And so it really is — is a gag rule. It’s a gag law to — to — to prevent kids from accessing supportive adults.”

Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis signed legislation protecting parental rights in Florida in March, which came following a spate of lawsuits across the country centered around clandestine social transitions of children in schools. The law prohibits discussion of sexual orientation and gender identity from kindergarten through third grade and required schools to notify parents about services for mental, emotional and physical health.

A 12-year-old Florida girl reportedly attempted suicide twice after administrators carried out a social transition without informing her parents, prompting a lawsuit, Fox News reported.

“Studies show that one supportive adult, one supportive adult for an LGBTQI+ kid can make all the difference in terms of preventing suicide, in terms of — of them, being able to navigate the world into adulthood and leading a — you know, a happy, successful productive life,” Levine said.

Levine previously endorsed a June 2022 executive order by President Joe Biden that expanded access to sex-change procedures for children, and claimed the following month that transgender youth were threatened by political attacks, bullying and mental health issues.

Republican Attorney General Andrew Bailey began an investigation into a clinic that provided sex change operations to minors after a whistleblower claimed puberty blockers and other medications were being provided with a minimal amount of psychiatric screening.
