Math teaches one to think logically about a variety of topics outside of the math classroom. Like politics?! Why do you think math scores are so low? Schools only pretend to teach. I have seen texbooks that take a convoluted route to get from 1+1 to 2 that is beyond imagination. Look at older texbooks. They teach practical math. How do I cut a board into 3 equal sized pieces? How much will a pound and half of fruit cost if bananas are 39 cents a pound? Now, math classrooms are often required to include social science essays!
