>Buttigieg: "there are roughly 1,000 cases a year of a train derailing"
(so no big deal, right?)
WRONG.
Freight Car Derailments
Most of them are SMALL accidents.
OHIO was HUGE by comparison:
-
Ohio derailment had FIVE TIMES as many cars derail as the yearly average between 2001-2010 38 vs 8.6
-
NO ACCIDENT during that period had more than 21 cars derail.

Was it an axle problem? Very few accidents from AXLE problems
Ranked NINTH and TENTH out of TEN for two different track types
just over 3% of derailments were axle-related.
Axle-related derailments did occur most often at HIGH-SPEEDS (vs those under 25mph).
What is from a HOT BEARING?
-
More likely; eye witness accounts focus on red hot bearing detected way before the accident.
https://abc7chicago.com/ohio-train-derailment-palestine-in/12818302/
5.9% of derailment' were from hot bearings
-
ranked THIRD in over all cases of derailments (but more likely at higher speeds).
-
trains are supposed to have HOT BEARING detectors, but they are not totally effective. The article does not say why. They sound expensive…….
