U.S. Military Completes Mission to Recover Chinese Surveillance Balloon, Optics and Electronics Now Being Tested by FBI

February 17, 2023 | Sundance | 31

The White House is trying to put the best spin on the Chinese spy balloon events by claiming the U.S. military jammed the electronics attached rendering the ability of the surveillance equipment incapable of transmission to relays (satellites) or mainland China.

Additionally, according to the White House strategic communications spokesperson John Kirby, the main structure of the electronics, optics and surveillance system has been recovered by the U.S. military and the equipment is now being studied and reverse engineered. WATCH (05:18 Prompted):

(Via Reuters) – The United States said on Friday it had successfully concluded recovery efforts off South Carolina to collect sensors and other debris from a suspected Chinese surveillance balloon shot down by a U.S. fighter jet on Feb. 4, and investigators are now analyzing its “guts.”

The last of the debris fro the Chinese balloon, which was downed by a Sidewinder missile, is heading to an FBI laboratory in Virginia for analysis, the U.S. military’s Northern Command said in a statement.

Reuters was first to report the conclusion of the recovery efforts, which were halted on Thursday.

“It’s a significant amount (of recovered material), including the payload structure as well as some of the electronics and the optics, and all that’s now at the FBI laboratory in Quantico,” said National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby.

Kirby said the United States had already learned a lot about the balloon by observing it as it flew over the United States.

“We’re going to learn even more, we believe, by getting a look at the guts inside it and seeing how it worked and what it was capable of,” he told a White House news briefing.

The U.S. military said Navy and Coast Guard vessels that had been scouring the sea for nearly two weeks have departed the area.

“Air and maritime safety perimeters have been lifted,” Northern Command said in a statement.

The U.S. military has said it believes it has collected all of the Chinese balloon’s priority sensors and electronicsas well as large sections of its structure, elements that could help counterintelligence officials determine how Beijing may have been collecting and transmitting surveillance information. Bellingcat director ‘banned’ from BAFTA awards

Police allegedly told Christo Grozev that he and his family posed a public security risk

Bulgarian investigative journalist Christo Grozev has reportedly been barred from the upcoming British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) awards in London after he was deemed a security risk.

Writing on Twitter on Friday, Grozev said he was “surprised to discover that my whole family and I have all been banned by British police from attending this weekend’s BAFTA awards where the documentary ‘Navalny’ is nominated.”

The journalist, who serves as Bellingcat’s director and lead Russia investigator, took part in the creation of the CNN-produced documentary, which focuses on jailed Russian opposition figure and Kremlin critic Alexey Navalny. The film has also been nominated for an Academy Award for ‘best documentary’.

Grozev claimed that the explanation he was given for the ban was that he and his family “represent a public security risk.”

“I understand the need to keep the public safe (although I don’t understand how my son or teenage daughter constitute risk to the public). But moments like this show the growing dangers to independent journalists around the world,” he wrote.

Grozev claimed that dangers for journalists don’t only stem from “murderous dictators,” but also from having their voices “hushed by the civilized world they are trying to serve.”

In July, Grozev was accused by Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) of working with Ukrainian intelligence services and NATO in an attempt to recruit Russian pilots. According to the FSB’s Center for Public Relations, Grozev took part in an operation to “hijack aircraft of Russia’s Armed Forces” by offering pilots money and guarantees of EU citizenship, in exchange for landing Russian aircraft at Ukrainian-controlled airfields.

The journalist denied being an operative for Kiev, but admitted he was involved in the story as a filmmaker as his Bellingcat team was making a documentary about the “wackiest counter-counter-intel operations of all time.”

Grozev has been placed on the FSB’s federal wanted list, while Bellingcat has been designated a “foreign agent” and banned for posing a “threat to the security of the Russian Federation.”

Germany needs military draft – reservist leader

Defense Minister Boris Pistorius has also hinted he supports reintroducing conscription

Germany’s ability to defend itself is at risk unless it reintroduces compulsory military service, Patrick Sensburg, the leader of the Bundeswehr Reservist Association, told local outlet Neue Osnabruecker Zeitung on Thursday.

The task of national defense “requires different material and a lot more staff” than the Bundeswehr currently commands, Sensburg said, arguing that even the most well-intentioned government efforts to fill in the gaps “will not work without conscription.”

He suggested that an active force of 350,000 soldiers and 1.2 million reservists would be required to adequately protect Germany. The country currently commands just over 183,000 soldiers, down from 317,000 two decades ago, and 100,000 reservists – 30,000 of whom train regularly.

“Germany needs a strong military that is well-trained but also has many reservists from all walks of life,” Sensburg told Deutsche Welle earlier this month. “We can only ensure that if we have compulsory military service.” A member of the Christian Democratic Union, he was the only lawmaker in his party to vote against the suspension of the draft in 2011.

Alternative for Germany (AfD) MP Ruediger Lucassen agreed with the reservist leader, telling German outlet Junge Freiheit on Thursday that the Bundeswehr was “not capable of national defense because of its lack of personnel.” Those comments came after the AfD parliamentary group proposed a motion to discuss reintroducing conscription in the Bundestag next month.

Defense Minister Boris Pistorius has called Germany’s decision to end military conscription a “mistake,” suggesting in a recent interview with Suddeutsche Zeitung that it obliterated the population’s sense of “awareness that they themselves are part of the state and society.”

Bringing back compulsory service would restore “connection to civic society at large” for an alienated young population, he insisted, while admitting that reintroducing the draft would have little if any immediate benefit to Germany.

A poll published Thursday by environmental advocacy group Greenpeace, cited by the DPA news agency, showed 50% of Germans oppose general conscription for men and women.

Meanwhile, nearly 500,000 Germans have signed a petition drafted by Die Linke (Left Party) politician Sahra Wagenknecht, urging Chancellor Olaf Scholz to stop providing Ukraine with weapons and to lead peace negotiations in order to prevent escalation into nuclear war.

Police told to keep record of ‘conspiracy theorists’ and ‘communists’

Law enforcement in Australia’s Queensland must report interactions with ‘extremists’ to counter-terror teams

The Queensland police are required to report interactions with people who “allegedly hold a range of ideological beliefs” including “conspiracy theorists,” according to an email sent to all members of the Queensland Police Service on Thursday and seen by ABC News.

Police must record interactions with such individuals in the state’s QPrime database “at the first available opportunity,” the email states, explaining that in addition to “conspiracy theorists,” “religious, social or political extremists and sovereign citizens, as well as people with ideologies relating to capitalism, communism, socialism or Marxism” also fit the bill.

Officers were also told to report “all matters that indicate concerning or escalating behavior due to ideological beliefs, including religious and single-issue ideologies” and advised of the “risks” inherent in dealing with these groups.

The guidance comes after a deadly shooting in Wieambilla in December left two officers and a civilian dead, in addition to the three shooters. Nathaniel, Gareth and Stacey Train reportedly gunned down constables Rachel McCrow and Matthew Arnold and injured two other officers on their property, also killing neighbor Alan Dare when he was drawn to the scene by the noise. The Trains were then killed by specialist police following an hours-long standoff.

Authorities are calling the incident a “religious terror attack,” citing theTrains’ Christian fundamentalistbeliefs, a strain known as premillenarianism, whose adherents prepare for and anticipate the End of Days. A police investigation concluded the family had “acted as an autonomous cell” to carry out the attack, Queensland Police Deputy Commissioner Tracy Linford told reporters on Thursday.

“Christian extremist ideology has been linked to other attacks around the world but this is the first time we’ve seen it in Australia,” the deputy commissioner said, acknowledging that there was no evidence the family had identified themselves as “sovereign citizens.” Stacey Train’s diary reportedly described police as “monsters and demons.”

Police were potentially “lured” to the Trains’ farm in search of Nathaniel, a high-school principal who had been reported missing by his estranged wife in New South Wales and was wanted on firearms charges.

Much has been made of Gareth Train’s postings on online forums, where he described Covid-19 as a “neurological bio-weapon” and the 1996 Port Arthur massacre, which led to sharply restricted gun ownership for civilians, as an operation to “disarm the Australian population.”
