National manhunt for former MTV star who allegedly tried to meet a girl under 15 for sex and groom her

There is a national manhunt for Connor Smith, a former MTV star, who is wanted by authorities for allegedly trying to meet a girl under the age of 15 for sex in Illinois and groom her.

On Tuesday, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office announced that detectives obtained a nationwide arrest warrant for Smith for three felonies: traveling to meet a minor, grooming, and disseminating harmful material.

For several weeks, the 32-year-old Smith was allegedly communicating with someone who he believed to be a girl under the age of 15. However, the girl was actually an undercover detective. The operation was carried out by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division in collaboration with the Naval Criminal Investigative Service.

Smith sent the "girl" sexually explicit photos and videos of himself, according to police. Smith then attempted to meet the "child" for sex on Feb. 9, authorities said. When Smith went to visit the "girl," detectives purportedly swooped in to apprehend him, but he was able to escape with his vehicle.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office said Smith "indicated he would surrender himself on the arrest warrant," but he has yet to do so. A Lake County judge set Smith's bond at $1 million.

In December 2021, Smith was arrested for allegedly raping and assaulting a 16-year-old girl in Indiana.

Smith reportedly drove out of state to meet a 16-year-old girl. The victim claimed that Smith forced her to perform a sex act on him as soon as she got in his pickup truck. The girl said Smith took her to a motel room and slapped her when she refused to get undressed.

The Times of Northwest Indiana reported, "The girl told police she took off most of her clothes, and Smith pulled her by the hair into the bathroom, urinated on her and forced her to drink his urine by holding her nose, records allege."

Smith is accused of raping the girl and strangling her when she attempted to resist.

Smith was charged with felony rape, sexual battery, and two counts of criminal confinement. The charges were dismissed in September after the victim stopped communicating with law enforcement and prosecutors said they didn't have enough evidence to convict him, according to Patch.

In 2015, Smith was a reality star on Season 3 of MTV's dating show "Are You the One?" The dating show features single contestants competing to find their perfect match. Smith found his "perfect match," but the couple split up after filming the reality TV show.

RNC reportedly poised to limit presidential debate participation to candidates who pledge to support the eventual GOP nominee

Under a proposal likely to be approved when the Republican National Committee's Temporary Standing Committee on Presidential Debates meets next week, GOP presidential candidates would be barred from taking part in debates if they decline to sign a pledge vowing to back the party's eventual nominee, the Associated Press has reported.

"After the primary, it is imperative to the health and growth of our Republican Party, as well as the country, that we all come together and unite behind our nominee to defeat Joe Biden and the Democrats," RNC Chair Ronna McDaniel noted in a statement to the AP when questioned about the pledge, according to the outlet.

McDaniel recently won another term as RNC chair, defeating challengers Harmeet Dhillon and Mike Lindell.

Former President Donald Trump officially announced in November 2022 that he is mounting another White House bid.

Earlier this week, former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley, who served in that role during a portion of Trump's tenure, threw her hat into the ring with a presidential bid. Haley also previously served as governor of South Carolina.

Other GOP figures may also jump into the Republican presidential race. Former Vice President Mike Pence — who served alongside Trump and has indicated that he is considering a presidential run — said on Wednesday that Haley might face "more company soon" in the presidential race.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who has not revealed any presidential aspirations, is widely viewed as a Republican figure who could potentially mount a White House bid.

"All Republicans can agree that Joe Biden has been a disaster for America," RNC member David Bossie said, according to the AP, which said that Bossie is leading the debate committee. "Therefore, it should be easy for every candidate to pledge unity toward defeating the radical Biden administration."

On Friday morning, journalist Ashley Zavala cornered Mia Bonta to ask about conflicts of interest and whether she will recuse herself from overseeing her husband, to which Bonta replied "There is no violation of ethical rules in my holding this position."

When pressed, Bonta became hostile.

On Thursday, Zavala asked Governor Gavin Newsom (D) if it's ethical for Bonta to lead the budget committee that oversees her husband, to which Newsom suggested he had no idea this was happening.

Justice Paul Rouleau ruled it was acceptable for Trudeau to use government police to quash the protests and force the workers to take their vaccines.

Justice Paul Rouleau, who released his 2,000-page final report on Friday, found Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government met the “very high threshold” for invoking the Emergencies Act after failures by police and politicians to address the protests.

Invoking the Emergencies Act is a “drastic move, but it is not a dictatorial one” Rouleau wrote.

“When the decision was made to invoke the (Emergencies Act) on February 14, (2022) … there existed a national emergency arising from threats to the security of Canada. That necessitated the taking of special temporary measures,” Rouleau told reporters in Ottawa Friday.

Rouleau added that he didn’t reach the decision lightly and did so “with reluctance,” and that reasonable people could come to a different conclusion based on the 36-days of testimony and thousands of documents submitted to the commission.
