North Korea launched an apparent “new type” of intercontinental ballistic missile on Thursday, the Defense Ministry said, firing the weapon into Japan’s exclusive economic zone and setting the stage for a fresh showdown over its nuclear weapons program.
The launch of the suspected ICBM signified a clear departure from North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s self-imposed moratorium on nuclear and long-range missile tests that had been in place since 2017.
State Minister of Defense Makoto Oniki told reporters that the “new type of ICBM-class” missile had flown for about 71 minutes and landed inside Japan’s EEZ, which extends 200 nautical miles (370 kilometers) from its coast, about 150 km west of Hokkaido’s Oshima Peninsula.
