'' The U.S. Navy submarine USS Albacore lost and on eternal patrol for 79 years, has finally been found. ''
The missing and presumed-lost sub was discovered off the coast of northern Japan by a team using autonomous underwater vehicles. The submarine disappeared in November 1944, on her 11th war patrol, likely after striking a mine.
Albacore, commissioned just seven months after Pearl Harbor, was one of the most successful submarines of the war. She sank 10 enemy ships, including transports, tankers, freighters, and patrol craft. Most notably, she was responsible for sinking the brand-new aircraft carrier Taiho, the flagship of the Japanese fleet, during the Battle of the Philippine Sea.

A team of Japanese searchers has found the remains of the missing submarine USS Albacore, lost during World War II.
The submarine went missing in 1944 and was presumed to have hit a mine.
Albacore was one of the Navy’s most accomplished submarines, sinking 10 enemy ships.

The missing and presumed-lost sub was discovered off the coast of northern Japan by a team using autonomous underwater vehicles. The submarine disappeared in November 1944, on her 11th war patrol, likely after striking a mine.
The announcement was made by the U.S. Navy’s Naval History and Heritage Command. The command’s Underwater Archaeology Branch confirmed that data provided by Professor Tamaki Ura, of the University of Tokyo, showed Albacore resting off the coast of Hokkaido, Japan’s northernmost island, where the Navy suspected she had been lost.

Japan’s NHK News reports the submarine was found approximately 4.3 miles off the city of Hakodate. This corresponds to the Tsugaru Strait, a narrow waterway between Hokkaido and the main island of Honshu. Albacore was likely positioned to ambush any shipping transiting the strait, or traveling between the two islands. She was reportedly instructed to stay out of the strait itself, which the U.S. Navy believed might be mined.
Ura details the discovery, via NHK:
“Using a high-performance sonar that searches underwater with sound waves, we discovered what seems to be a hull of about (164 feet) in the seabed of about (820 feet). On the 26th, when I submerged the underwater robot camera and took a picture, I caught a part that seems to be a bridge and a pillar that looks like a periscope.”
Albacore was 311 feet long, so either half of the hull is buried in the ocean floor, or the submarine exceeded its crush depth and broke up on its way down. The Gato-class submarines, of which Albacore was an example, were only rated to a test depth of 300 feet.

From the Underwater Archaeology Branch:
“Strong currents, marine growth, and poor visibility on site made it challenging to fully document the wreck or obtain comprehensive images. However, several key features of a late 1944 Gato-class submarine were identified in the video.
“Indications of documented modifications made to Albacore prior to her final patrols such as the presence of an SJ Radar dish and mast, a row of vent holes along the top of the superstructure, and the absence of steel plates along the upper edge of the fairwater allowed UAB to confirm the wreck site finding as Albacore.”
Albacore’s resting place is treated as a grave site—she had a crew of 85—and the location is protected by the Abandoned Shipwrecks Act. Ura’s team plans to go back in August and survey the wreck again using a larger underwater robot.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department is now investigating his death.

O'Connell's death was first announced by Jose H Gomez, an archbishop with the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, who called his colleague 'a man of deep prayer.'
'He was a peacemaker with a heart for the poor and the immigrant, and he had a passion for building a community where the sanctity and dignity of every human life was honored and protected,' Gomez said in a statement.
'He was also a good friend, and I will miss him greatly. I know we all will.
'Please join me in praying for Bishop Dave and for his family in Ireland. May Our Lady of Guadalupe wrap him in the mantle of her love, and may the angels lead him into paradise, and may he rest in peace.'
Following the announcement, parishioners gathered outside O'Connell's home, where some were seen crossing themselves as the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department continued its investigation.
'It broke me and I was scared to tell my wife, because my wife loved him so much,' Johnny Flores told ABC 7.
Glendy Perez said he was 'a humble soul.
'He was not the type that would have confrontations with nobody,' she said. 'He was very loving and he had like a gift of healing.

''Statement on the Death of Auxiliary Bishop David O’Connell''
Most Reverend José H. Gomez
Archbishop of Los Angeles
February 18, 2023
I am very sad this afternoon to report that our beloved Auxiliary Bishop David O’Connell has passed away unexpectedly. It is a shock and I have no words to express my sadness.
As a priest and later a bishop here in Los Angeles for forty-five years, Bishop Dave was a man of deep prayer who had a great love for Our Blessed Mother. He was a peacemaker with a heart for the poor and the immigrant, and he had a passion for building a community where the sanctity and dignity of every human life were honored and protected.
He was also a good friend, and I will miss him greatly. I know we all will. Please join me in praying for Bishop Dave and for his family in Ireland. May Our Lady of Guadalupe wrap him in the mantle of her love, may the angels lead him into paradise, and may he rest in peace.
