anon 'members big TO-DO in congress back in the 70s when the railroads were lobbying hard for a few billion in federal money to repair their dangerously decrepit infrastructure. leading oil shills stood in front of congress and declared it would be unamerican to use taxpayer dollars to subsidize a private industry, then turned around and appropriated hundreds of billions to build new interstate highways (thereby subsidizing the trucking industry). trains move 460 ton•miles of cargo with one gallon of fuel. trucks burn more than 20 times as much fuel to move the same cargo the same distance. gee, could there have been a connection?
