Throughout his long career as an elected official, Mike Pence has sought to dehumanize and demean LGBTQ people at every opportunity. From his years in Congress to his time as Governor and his current role facilitating many of Trump's anti-LGBTQ actions, Mike Pence has been a willing and eager participant in the campaign against LGBTQ equality. Pence attempted to license discrimination against LGBTQ people by signing into law a religious exemption designed to create swiss cheese out of nondiscrimination laws.

In 2007, Pence stoked far-right fear of LGBTQ non-discrimination protections by lying about ENDA (the Employment Non-Discrimination Act):

"Under ENDA, employees around the country who possess religious beliefs that are opposed to homosexual behavior would be forced, in effect, to lay down their rights and convictions at the door. For example, if an employee keeps a Bible in his or her cubicle, if an employee displays a Bible verse on their desk, that employee could be claimed by a homosexual colleague to be creating a hostile work environment because the homosexual employee objects to passages in the Bible relating to homosexuality."

Trump-Pence Administration policies undermine LGBTQ health equity

President Donald J. Trump has presided over a dramatic expansion in anti- LGBTQIA+1 public policies, from health care nondiscrimination to military service. With a few exceptions such as Trump’s Ending the HIV Epidemic (EHE) plan, the policies pursued by President Trump and Vice President Michael Pence have echoed the positions of the religious right organizations that developed them. These include religious refusal policies that allow health care and social service providers to refuse to serve individuals based on religious or moral objection, the repeal of Obama-Biden-era sexual orientation and gender identity nondiscrimination language in health care regulations, and anti-transgender policies in the nation’s schools, homeless shelters, and prisons.

Trump has also dangerously stoked the flames of racial and social division, and undermined basic institutions of our democracy, from the free press to the right to peacefully petition one’s government for the redress of grievances.

The Fenway Institute has published three annual reports on the Trump Administration’s policies toward LGBTQ health equity and HIV prevention and care.2 In this report we review the Trump Administration’s record on LGBTQIA+ equality, HIV prevention and care policy, and racial justice issues from 2017-2020.

The White House streamed a homophobic church service attended by Vice President Mike Pence on Sunday, during which a preacher claimed that a "demonic spirit" is behind homosexuality.

The video, which is still available on the official White House YouTube page, showed Pence promising to "stand strong for the values that you hold dear" while speaking at the Holy City Church of God in Christ in Memphis.

Moments after Pence's remarks, Bishop Jerry Wayne Taylor launched into a rant about homosexuality.
