I generally don't trust people who agree with me constantly. Sometimes I like to test the waters by throwing out some really obvious bullshit to see if they'll agree with it.
Your theory is believable, but I've got a different take. I think he's just got a follower personality and didn't easily come to terms with the idea that people he trusted were incorrect. Will be interesting to see if he actually improves himself, or if he falls in with a lot of the propaganda that gets spammed around the chans.
I'm sure he definitely cares about how people could misinterpret his own comments. If challenged on any of them, he certainly apologizes and commits to doing better in the future, instead of trying to correct their interpretation.
