Turn around. A few years ago, when the now-deceased Murdaugh son, Paul, and his friends were being warmed up and asked What happened? and Who was driving? in the immediate aftermath of a 3 AM boat crash after a night of partying and underage drinking - a crash which killed 18 year old Mallory Beach…. caught on one of the bodycam recordings was something to the effect of "Do you know who his father is? Good luck" [getting justice here] in reference to Alex Murdaugh's son Paul (now deceased) who was identified by most of the teens as the drunken driver of the boat.
Both civil and criminal cases were pending in that case when Paul was murdered.
Corruption and circling the wagons has been a hallmark for this family going back generations when as the highest law enforcement figure in the county, the Murdaugh in charge of the county's law and order then both "prosecuted" and actively aided and abetted bootleggers during Prohibition. Another was killed - while also holding that position - when his car was "stuck" on railroad tracks and he was smashed by a train.
Here are a couple of background articles (before verdict):

"For more than a century, the Murdaugh name was synonymous with law, order, and power. Today, if a judge or jury convicted and sentenced Alex Murdaugh consecutively for every crime he is currently charged with, that punishment would theoretically equal the next seven centuries in a South Carolina prison."
"As the Murdaugh dynasty now comes to terms with its own tragedy, the trains roll on through Hampton County."
