The 60th Anniversary of The Jetsons:
How a ’60s Cartoon Classic Predicted the Future and Automation
Those who have played Scrabble are most likely to also remember The Jetsons, a beloved and popular animation series in the US that debuted 60 years ago this week, on September 23, 1962. The space-age storylines were centered around the comical misadventures of a futuristic family, known as The Jetsons, who lived in the sky-high Skypad Apartments in a space town called Orbit City, set 100 years in the future, in 2062.
While there were well over 20 main characters on the show, the leading stars of the Hanna-Barbera cartoon series included George Jetson, a digital index operator at Spacely’s Space Sprockets, his wife Jane, 16-year-old daughter Judy, 6 ½-year-old son Elroy, space dog Astro, and a robotic maid/housekeeper named Rosie.
There was also Mr. Cosmo S. Spacely, the owner/president of Spacely Space Sprockets and George’s hot-tempered boss. He was one of the major antagonists and anti-heroes of the series along with rival Mr. Spencer W. C. Cogswell, the owner/president of Cogswell's Cosmic Cogs.
Does this bring back fond memories? If it does, then keep reading.
