A family tends to "help." I am single and do the workfag thing. Saving money, buying tools and things that will save money in the future and be assets for my children to learn skills with (… when I get to doing that…).
Most of the guys who are at work have families and they have to go to work. HR thought I was nuts when I told them I would consider whether or not to consent to covid testing if OSHA required it - there was a big deal when I came from a prior employer who I left after they were going to arm band people over covid vaccine status (which everyone thought was nuts - but the owner was a fruitloop out of St. Louis). I have the financial freedom to tell them all to go to hell and have walked from jobs in the past.
The guy with a $700k note on a new home…? He may have a farm, but he's working for another man for a reason.
Guy I worked with before that? Son of one of the accounting guys around town - has his own welding/fabrication business and worked the weekends mostly for the insurance.
I say it like it's all a bad thing - but when you have a partner to help hold down the house or take care of the shopping/food, there's a bit more actual free time outside of work to make use of.
