The pope took the loan, but one of the popes guardians didn't like the terms, tried to band together a group of italian banks to take over the loan. When Rothschilds got wind of the plan, they simply reminded the guardian that there was a clause in the loan that if the pope wanted to renegotiate the loan, Rothschild would get first dibs, effectivley trapping the papacy into a loan that could never be repaid.
