Good plan, anon. Another thought: before doing that, you can familiarize yourself with it by installing it in a VM, if your current computer can handle running a VM. See VirtualBox; VMware is another option.
Also anon read couple years ago that Ubuntu had gotten itself comped, and Arch Linux was less comped. Anon runs that now. Anon remembers Slackware/Gentoo (build the entire system one's self, takes a long time, big investment (time, not financial), one learns a lot). Like anon said last bread, big step but there are better guard rails now. :)
